A/N: Alright so this is another attempt to kinda start writing again since I've been out of this for a long time so here it is. This is called War-zone. The basic premise is something similar to SAO and Accel World combined and I hope you guys and gals enjoy. Here's chap 1.
Normal talking: "Blah"
Thinking/Online messages: "Blah"
Dream sequence: He winced as he felt himself standing
Emphasis: "Do not piss me off"
It's been years since the creation of the virtual reality system. The system allowed people to dive into the games that they enjoyed to play. The simple joy of being able to interact with the characters that they loved made the game industry boom until the Ells Game Corporation designed the first inter-graded neural link system which allowed faster processing through the use of brain waves. The neural link system was then used to create a game called WAR-ZONE. This game is what would launch the Neural Link system to its current status as the standard in games and technology. The heir to the company Damien Ells is the creator of war-zone as well as the admin of the game but refuses to use that fact to his advantage. The beta testers were pleased with the game and it entered development a year and a half after the initial beta was released. It is now the most popular game in the world with millions of players and exponentially more log time. There are stories of people who have dominated the top and refuse to stop while there are stories of those who have attempted to abuse the system and exploit its carefully hidden loopholes.
"Ngh…Again? How many times does it make this week?" A male asked another who was on the ground clutching his stomach. "You challenge me every day and you lose every match. Why?" He asked with an unimpressed look on his face. In his hands was a combat rifle which disappeared as soon as he tossed it to his side.
The other person stared at the ground with an enraged expression as he let his fingers dig into the earth. "I guess it's so I can prove myself to the Special Operators." He replied without raising his head to look at the man that had just defeated him. "I know I can be of some use!" He yelled out until he felt the cold metal of a handgun on his forehead. "What?"
"You've lost one too many times kid." The man replied as he pulled the trigger causing the other person to instantly disappear without any trace of him ever being there. "Execution complete." He muttered to himself as he placed the handgun into the holster on his hip.
A man with white hair shot up from his bed as he took in deep breaths in order to calm himself. "Ngh. I failed again and this time he executed me…GAH! That's another character that I won't be able to use anymore!" The man sighed as he let himself fall back onto his bed. "What time is it?" He though aloud as he reached for a white tablet on the table next to him. He quickly slid his fingers over the screen which caused it to light up as well as reveal the time which caused him to jump up with wide eyes. "I'm Late!" He exclaimed as he stood up and quickly got dressed followed by a full speed run to school.
By the time he reached school the classes had already started so with the stealth of a ninja he tried to sneak into the classroom through the window until the teacher turned to face the classroom. "Damien Ells. It's a pleasure to see that you could join us." The sudden statement made the class erupt into a fit of laughter as the now red-faced Damien sat down at his seat and buried his head into a book. "Well then back to the lecture. Oh and Mr. Ells." The teacher said as he pointed at his desk. "Congratulations on receiving the highest score on this week's examination. Unfortunately your school work more than makes up for such exceptional test scores."
"Homework is boring!" He replied which caused another uproar of laughter from the class. "I mean it's completely unneeded. It's just telling us to do the things we did in class over and over again. It's waaaay too tedious." He continued while placing the book he had on top of his head on his desk. His antics had the class in an extremely loud laughing fit which caused the teacher to slam his book on his own desk which silenced the laughter.
"Homework is there to provide repetition of the lessons I have taught. With repetition you understand the work and become smarter Mr. Ells. Although I regret not doing a better job of making that clear since you seem to be so dense. I swear I've had more interesting conversations with a wall. A wall Mr. Ells." The teacher replied with a sigh as he stopped the conversation there and continued the lesson which had gone off track for too long.
After the classes for that day ended, Damien rushed home so he could continue his business from that morning. He sighed as he entered his home and tossed his stuff on a nearby couch. "I'm home!" He called out as he walked into his room and shut the door. He looked at the cord connected to his computer then chuckled as he picked up the cord and inserted it into an opening on the base of his neck. This caused him to gently lie down on the bed and soundly fall into a trance like sleep.
When he opened his eyes he noticed a screen hovering in front of him. The words welcome to war-zone shone brightly until a menu replaced the letters. He stared at the screen and he noticed a cursor next to the word name. "Ugh…gotta register again." He said silently as he filled in all of his information. As soon as he finished, a bright light engulfed him which caused him to shield his eyes until a voice rang out in front of him.
"Welcome to War-zone my name is Kayla. I'm a moderator and I'll be the one to guide you through the basic introductions." The person in front of him was a woman with golden brown hair which reached all the way to her lower back. Apart from that she had a pair of cat ears on the top of her head. He wanted to ask about them but lost the nerve when he noticed her choice of attire. She wore a tank top which was cut off a bit over her stomach as well as a vest which was the same color of the top. Apart from that she wore baggy pants which allowed a tail to peak through and sway as she walked. "Are you coming?" She asked as she stood at a doorway.
"Uhh y-yeah right away!" He said as he ran over to her. "I've played this game for a while so I don't really need to have a guide." He said while rubbing his chin.
Kayla giggled as she turned and looked at him. "Ells Corp. released a new patch which changed a lot of the game since this morning." She said as she opened a menu and entered a few commands which allowed a strange door to appear and open. "In order to go into the war-zone you must be at least level five and you have to belong to a guild, organization or group." Damien tilted his head and wondered who authorized a patch without his consent.
"I see. Then let's get going shall we?" He asked as he stepped through the door followed by Kayla. Once he was able to look around he noticed multiple other people in the room. They were all in their regular attire until each of them began disappearing one by one and then reappearing as different classes. From a soldier all the way to a knight; it was a very interesting experience for Damien until it was his turn to scroll through the menu in front of him. "What the? The class selection screen is gone." He said only to hear a loud giggle as a reply. "What's so funny?!"
She sighed and looked at him with a warm smile. "Close your eyes and focus. No menus no selection screens. Just focus on what you feel right now." As if being soothed by her voice he closed his eyes and many thoughts ran through his head until he felt a strange burst of power go through his body and with a loud gasp he awoke in the same area as the others but he was still in the same attire he entered the room in. "That's strange. Seems you either have a special class or you already had a class set up. Oh well since none of your physical features changed. Welcome to the lounge." She said as a portal opened up behind her revealing a place full of people, places and interesting things. "This is where all Human type characters meet. There are also special attractions as well as homes for sale. Since you've been here before I doubt I'd have to show you around so see ya later." She said as she stepped through and disappeared into the large crowd.
The first thing on his mind was to level to five so he could grind the stronger NPCs and get some good experience for his skills and attributes but where was he going to find a person to face off against. At least he wondered about this until he heard someone bragging about their power even if they were only a level three. "Ah no need to thank me my good friends! I will soon be a special operator and I will traverse the wild war-zone in order to bring back plenty of money for us to share and take over this place!" His voice sounded like gravel moving around in a can and that did a little more than annoy the young heir to the Ells Corporation. He smirked as he walked towards the unsuspecting person and looked at him with a defiant look. "What do you want? Money?" He asked with a condescending attitude which pissed the young man off even more. "Hey pretty boy you listening!"
"Fight me" He replied with eyes narrowed which caused the bragging man to laugh out loud.
The man smirked and turned to Damien with his hand out. "I accept the challenge." He said as the area around them began to change into what looked like a forest with an open clearing in the middle of it. "Rules are simple. Five minutes and winner is determined by highest hit-points left."
Damien nodded as he cracked his knuckles and readied himself. A loud voice began counting down as both contestants finished their final preparations. "3!...2!...1!. FIGHT!" Both contestants charged at each other leaving no movement wasted.
The arrogant man smirked as he drew a firearm and fired two shots which grazed Damien's shoulder. The small amount of pain caused him to run towards the trees in order to take cover until he looked down and beneath his feet was a frag grenade which he had thrown the second he went to hide in the trees. "Damnit!" He yelled out as he picked it up and whipped it back at him but the grenade exploded mid air causing no damage to either person.
Taking advantage of the now exposed Damien, the man summoned his weapon which was a fully automatic assault rifle and unleashing multiple burst fire streams at the unarmed opponent. "You honestly thought you had a chance at beating me!" He yelled out as he pulled the pin on another grenade and lobed it into the forest area once again. "You're only a runt! A tiny little bug that I am about to squish!" He yelled out as he took more shots at Damien while he ran from the explosion the grenade caused.
"Ngh! That was close.." He murmured as he brushed the dust from his clothes. "Now that He thinks I'm either dying or dead…time to think of a plan." He looked around his environment and noticed the abundant amount of trees. "Never actually noticed the environment on here since I was too busy just trying to get experience points."
A sudden crash caused Damien to focus his attention to the soldier who was keeping a close eye on his surroundings in order to keep himself from being attacked from behind. "Come on newbie! I know you're here. I can smell your fear a mile away." He stopped and turned towards the large group of trees and hit a button on the side of his gun which activated a flashlight. "Activate heat seeking visor." He said as a visor slid down from his helmet.
"Damn." Was the only word that escaped from his mouth when a volley of bullets his him square in the chest causing him to fall onto his back. "urgh..I'm done for." He murmured until a blinking light caught his attention. He moved his left hand and opened a menu which revealed his skill list which originally had none in it. The only things he saw were skills called Aura and Tempest.
The soldier smirked and removed his visor so he could clearly see his opponents face when they lost. "Seems like your plan of stalling and landing damage at the last second backfired huh newbie." He then allowed his rifle to disappear and instead reached for the holster on his hip which had his sidearm.
Damien growled to himself as he closed his eyes only to feel a warm feeling through his body. "Aura." He said as a light blinded the soldier who shielded his eyes from the light. Once the light retreated the soldier's eyes widened as he realized that Damien's wounds were mostly healed. The clock was down to its last minute and he decided it was best for him to stall this time. "Not so fast." Damien said as he closed the distance and punched the soldier in the gut.
The soldier reeled back from the hit and was gasping for air when he felt his opponent's knee strike him in the same spot causing him to hunch over in pain until a second knee sent his head upwards. "H-how?" He questioned but the only thing he heard was the sound of the match ending.
Almost as if breaking out of a trance, Damien looked around and then looked at his menu which had a sign saying congratulations on winning with a rather annoying looking face on it. The sounds of someone clapping caused him to turn and notice a woman wearing a black and white robe as well as a white cloak. Her hair was black and covered a portion of her face which caught the young heir's attention. "Congrats on awakening to your ability." She said warmly with a smile which caused him to blush lightly.
"Thanks but what do you mean awakening?" He replied.
"An awakening is when you first activate your hidden abilities. It seems you have awakened to the Aura and Tempest abilities." The words that came out of her mouth caused him to look at her with a serious expression. "Aura is a healing ability which is at its strongest when first used. After that you must train it so that it can be that useful again and Tempest is a boost type ability which allows you to deal increased damage when using strike style attacks. Tempest also has a hidden ability which allows you to strike as fast as you can think but will only work when trained to that point." She said aloud answering his questions before he could even ask.
"I see. So I'm a fighter type this time." He said as he clenched his fists until the woman grabbed his hand and uncoiled his fist.
"Being a fighter type is not about strength but rather about being able to see through your opponents defenses. Striking a single point once rather than striking the whole body time and time again." She said as she traced a seal onto his hand. "My name is Maria. I lead the Monastery, a place where fighters can grow and master their skills."
He chuckled and placed his hand on top of hers. "I would like it if you stopped beating around the bush Maria." He looked at her and noticed that his words may have made her feel a little upset. "Uhh I mean. If you are inviting me into the Monastery then I would gladly accept."
She nodded as the seal she traced into his hand began to glow which caused them to disappear into a flash of light which caused little disturbance to the crowds. Upon their arrival, she removed her cloak and robe which revealed a combination of a tank top and vest as well as a pair of fitting shorts which she most likely wore when she fought. "Please make yourself at home. Our second in command Kayla will lead you to your room as well as give you your pass to travel freely through the different areas."
Damien nodded and bowed then crossed his arms as he waited for his guide. A few minutes later Kayla walked in and chuckled at the sight of Damien again. "To think we'd run into each other again." She said with a chuckle as she motioned for him to follow her. "At the monastery it's a simple methodology we follow. Become stronger through discipline and not brute force."
"So I guess I'll have to learn a style of combat." He said aloud which caused a giggle to escape the woman's lips. "What's so funny?"
She stopped and turned to face him. "If learning a style was really enough about half of the players here would be stronger that those who lead the guilds. Here you need to learn discipline which means you're going to learn your own style of combat as well as the experience and skill you need to use it properly as opposed to randomly swinging your fists like an idiot." She then turned and continued explaining what the labeled rooms were for as well as where the training grounds and mess hall were. Finally she ended the tour at a room with the necessities for someone who decided to play the game for long periods of time. "Alright so that ends the tour."
"Thanks for doing that." He said as he bowed and stepped into the room. As the door shut behind him he decided to lie in bed and skim through his menu and the options he had when it came to spending the experience needed to get to level five.
End chap 1. Hope you enjoyed.
