Tristan shrugged his coat on as he jogged down the stairs and headed towards the kitchen for a snack. Though his blinding grin made it seem like he was overly excited about eating a pop-tart, he was actually ecstatic about his date with Zander. The two just started their winter breaks from college and hadn't been on a proper date since they had come back one weekend in early October. It wasn't anything too fancy, a lunch date at IHOP and Cold Stone ice cream to top it off, but it was the first time the two were hanging out in a while and Tristan missed his boyfriend—and his lips.
His black suspenders got caught on one of the drawers of the island as he passed around it to get to the snack cabinet and he nearly stumbled. His mom scoffed from the kitchen door and he gave her a look as he untangled himself from the island.
"You look nice." She said, referring to his black and white acid wash jeans, black button up, the suspenders that nearly made him break his neck, and his gray trench coat he loved because he thought it made him look mysterious.
"Thanks," he said curtly, hoping that this conversation wasn't going where he thought it was going.
"Going anywhere special?" She was probing—but she was being less forward that his dad had been.
"I'm going on a date with Zander." Though his back was turned to her as he reached into the cabinet to get his pop tarts, he knew she was rolling her eyes.
"You're still seeing him?"
"You're still asking me about this?" He turned around and ripped open his pop tart, taking an angry bite from it. Unfortunately, his mom didn't look fazed.
"I don't like how much you go out with him."
"He's my boyfriend mom. That's what couples do. And I was well aware that you and dad didn't like my relationship when I started dating Zander over a year ago."
"I don't think you should see him anymore." Tristan's dad appeared beside his mom, his arms folded across his chest. He looked fed up.
The same way Tristan felt.
"Right dad. Like you can still tell me what to do. I'm almost nineteen. I can date whomever I want to."
"Why can't you just date a nice girl?" His mom asked. He glanced up at her, and she looked significantly less mad than his father, but she still wanted him to change. And he didn't appreciate that.
"Because I'm already dating a nice, caring, smart and gorgeous man that I love!" He couldn't help the fact that his voice had raised to a yell. His parents just didn't understand. He slammed his pop tart down on the counter and it crumbled under his hand. "I want to get married someday. If it happens to be to a guy—" he paused for a moment, looking at his parents with a hurt expression. He felt like someone had jammed a knife in his gut and shanked him. "Would you guys even come?"
"M-marriage?" His dad sputtered, and Tristan was pretty sure he nearly gave his dad a heart attack.
"You know what, just forget it. I'm done with this conversation whether you guys are or not." He shook his head sadly and pushed past his parents.
"Tristan, come back here right now!" If Tristan was younger, he definitely would've been scared of his dad's 'try me and see what happens' voice. It didn't shake him now.
"No. I'm leaving for my date with Zander and you guys can't do anything about it." He bit back some really nasty words and settled for yanking the front door open and slamming it behind him. He plopped down on the porch bench as angrily as he could and folded his arms. He hoped that Zander would get here soon, because all he wanted to do right now was kiss his amazing boyfriend and forget the fight with his parents.
So he waited. And waited. And waited some more.
He wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand when he realized that his boyfriend had stood him up. He hoped that Zander had a good reason for it.
He couldn't go back inside since he had just stormed out after having a fight with his parents. So he settled with whipping out his cell and dialing his boyfriend's number. He didn't wait to hear Zander's voice before he started speaking.
"Zander, what the fuck! Seriously! I hope you have a really fucking good reason for standing me up, because that was an asshole move and I'm pretty sure I have pneumonia from sitting on my porch for so long."
"Zander's in the hospital." Tristan's mouth dropped open when he heard Zander's mom's voice and suddenly he was the one feeling like an asshole.
"W-what?" He sputtered, standing from his spot on the porch bench. His heart hurt.
"Zander was in a car accident. Nothing too serious, but he has to stay a night in the hospital. That's why he didn't come to pick you up."
"Oh my god," he murmured, rushing inside his house and grabbing his car keys off the island. He was glad that his parents had relocated to another part of the house, because he didn't have the patience or the time to be dealing with them at this moment. "I'm on my way."
Tristan skidded to a stop in front of Zander's hospital room and took a moment to catch his breath and compose himself before stepping inside. Zander was talking to his mom and he looked up and smiled when Tristan entered. He didn't look to have any major injuries—just some bumps and bruises. His mom turned around and gave him a dirty look and Tristan felt really shitty.
"Tristan." Zander said softly.
"Mrs. Kings, I'm so sorry," Tristan apologized, stepping closer to the hospital bed housing his boyfriend. "I was really upset because I just got into a fight with my parents and I wasn't thinking. I love your son, I really do, and I hope you know that."
"I do," she said, standing and pulling Tristan into a hug. He hugged her back, relieved that she had forgiven him after the mean things he had said. "I'll let you guys have some time alone."
"Thanks mom," Zander said. His mom left the room as Tristan plopped down on the stool next to his hospital bed.
"I assume your mom told you about the stuff I said." Tristan spoke quietly as he weaved his fingers together with Zander's.
"Yeah. You know that I would never stand you up, right?" Tristan leaned forward and kissed his boyfriend sweetly.
"Of course. I'm sorry, I just jumped to conclusions. I was really upset." Zander tugged Tristan's arm indicating that he wanted Tristan to join him on his hospital bed—so Tristan did.
"You said you had a fight with your parents? What was it about?"
"They had another stupid rant about me dating you. I basically told them off and it just bothers me so much that they still don't understand that I love you and I'm not going to stop being with you just because they say so." Zander snuggled up next to his boyfriend and Tristan pressed a kiss to his forehead.
"I love you too. It's sad that they don't get it. But thank you for defending me…over and over again."
"I'd defend you until the end of time Zander."
Zander leaned against Tristan as he helped him up the stairs and into his room. He'd hurt his ankle when he got into that car accident, so stairs were a bit tricky for him. When they entered his room, Tristan eased him down onto his bed and sat down next to him.
"Thanks for helping me." Zander turned and smiled at him, giving him a quick kiss. "And I'm sorry we didn't get to go on that date. I was really looking forward to it."
"I was looking forward of it too. But that's okay, because I still get to spend time with you."
"May I suggest sexy time?" Zander gave Tristan a naughty smile and Tristan returned it. He leaned over and pressed a kiss to Zander's lips, moving to straddle his waist.
"I'm sorry for those things I said," Tristan mumbled against his boyfriend's lips.
"'Sfine." Zander whispered, wrapping his arms around his Tristan. "Just come closer."
