"To begin this drill, I'll throw daggers at you in random directions, without warning. All you have to do is simply dodge them."
My jaw dropped and I waved my arms around like a lunatic.
"Wait a second; Lux! I just got out of confinement! Isn't there a more rational-"
A dagger whizzed by my head and cut off a clump of my hair.
"Shit!" I dropped to the ground before the second dagger could pierce my arm. "You bastard!" I yelled as I got up and began to clumsily dodge the daggers thrown my way.
After training, Lux patched up the cuts on my body, the shallow one on my neck and the deeper one across my upper-arm. I winced as a needle entered my skin and coolness spread throughout my arm. I watched Lux stitch up my arm and wrap it when he was done. "You really are an asshole," I murmured as the drug took over and I started to close my eyes. The last thing I saw was Lux smirking.

"Today we'll be working on your cardio endurance and agility. First off, I want you to stretch with me," Lux said as he sat down on the grass. I groaned; I was not a flexible person. Stretching was a no-no. Lux shot me a look and I reluctantly sat down. "We'll just start with a simple hamstring stretch. Nothing you can't handle," Lux said, nudging me playfully. I rolled my eyes and did my best to touch my toes but only made it to my ankles. The stretching overall was just Lux showing off all these complex stretches and acrobatics while I just tried to mimic him. Keyword: tried. My legs hurt and I'm sure my back would be sore in the morning; thanks, Lux.
"Okay, let's try running a few miles," Lux suggested. I was starting to think Lux was a stupid blonde. Well- if white could be considered blonde.
I took a long time to run three miles and had to constantly stop for rests.
At the end of the day, Lux only had one thing to say: "This is gonna be a long year."

It had been five months since my first week of training. I made a lot of progress thanks to Lux's persistence. Every day was the same schedule: wake up, eat, train, take a break, eat, home school, train, eat a small snack, shower, bed.
I could do some of the acrobatics that Lux could but I was nowhere near ready for my first mission.
(Father told me I'd have my first mission at the nine month mark of my training, and I could probably go to a private school with my siblings next year. Lux Kurosawa, my eldest brother, graduated a year ago; my sister, Kaya, is sixteen. Hikaru is fourteen, in his freshman year.)

Lux and I worked on my weapon usage and continued with my acrobatics. How many injuries did I get today? Four and two of them would leave scars on my palms from failed defensive training. I must admit it wasn't the smartest thing to block a blade with my bare hands. Lux scolded me for doing such a stupid thing and then we continued on with guns.

It was the day of my first mission, four months later. I had to kill a small time gang member that tried to set a Kurosawa warehouse on fire. The idiot left evidence everywhere and hadn't even started a flicker within the building.

I crept into the apartment of the 'boss' and found him injecting something into his arm; the Head's not going to be happy when he hears that I got it easy on my first assassination. At least the man's death would be somewhat peaceful.

I made my way to where he was and quickly slit his throat with a simple switchblade. The warm blood started oozing out steadily. I flinched. I dipped my fingers into the puddle forming near the chair and I began to paint on the empty wall in the apartment.

"Kage." I inspected the scene and made sure I left no evidence behind. Mm, pretty well done if I say so myself. Lux would be here soon to check over my work and report to the Head about the "quality" of the killing. This all made me sick, but what could I do against the highest ranking gang in the whole underground warfare?

"Shadow, why do you have to leave?" I clutched onto him tighter and nestled my head into his upper-arm. He tensed and tried to cover it up by running his fingers through my hair, but I had felt it.

"Why do you think I'm leaving, kitten?" he asked. His posture was rigid and gave away his lie. I sighed and leaned my head back onto the wall behind me.

"I'm not dumb," I said.

Shadow sighed, and from the corner of my eye I saw a haze engulf him. There was a small black kitten was in his place; it scurried up to me and licked my cheek in a comforting way. I started crying as I watched the cat escape from the cell.

A man in a white coat came in with a grim face. He pulled a syringe from his pocket that had a clear liquid in it. I started crying harder to the point where my throat was raw. I felt a sharp prick in my arm. I started to struggle and kick at the man but I was restrained.

I eventually gave in and stopped fighting the tiredness that overcame me, and I slipped into sleep.

edit: I went back and corrected some errors I made when I changed this chapter to past-tense. Chapters 2-3 have been removed and will be corrected. The errors were solely my fault. Tell me if there are any more errors because I'm correcting this on a kindle and it's a pain in the ass.
