The Valentines Day Surprise

Everyone hates Valentines day right? Right?...

Yeah...

Well I'm sure the couples love it. It just gives them an excuse to shove their happiness in everyone's faces. So you can probably tell, I wasn't too optimistic about this Valentines day. Why should this one have been any different?

Well anyway, it was two days before the big day. The atmosphere at school was tense. REALLY tense. The ugly kids were anxious, the hot girls were puckering up their lips and Mr. Berlin spent a hour sobbing in the Janitors closet.

I was stood by my locker with my three friends- Mort, Michelle and Steve. That term is used loosely since they always find ways to confuse and annoy me. I'm not the smartest guy, okay? How am I meant to join in on conversations about books? Well on this particular day, my friend Steve was trying to convince me the benefits of Valentines day.

"It's a way for people to express their love for each other" Steve said, a pleading tone visible in his voice, "Why can't you see that?"

"You're only saying that cause you got a girlfriend" I huffed, admittedly jealous.

Steve was the kind of guy who we all thought would never get a girlfriend until high school. He was a mix of Goth and Emo (He claimed to be a "Gomo" or something retarded like that) and he was kind of ugly. His hair covered half his eyes and he wore the same skull t-shirt everyday. But he proved us wrong and got a girlfriend. A hot girl. Yeah, she was a goth too. But she was still hot.

"Maybe so" replied Steve, "But it's not like you couldn't get a girlfriend too".

"Oh thanks Steve, make us sound un-datable" said Michelle, smiling.

"I didn't mean it like that..." Steve sighed, "Look, how about we all spend Valentines day together? Then you don't feel left out".

"Steve, you don't have to" said Mort, "I'm sure you and Angelica have something better planned. Watching a Tim Burton film for the billionth time perhaps?"

"Ha ha" said Steve, in his usual monotone voice, "But why not? It could be fun".

"I guess it's more fun than Valentines day at my house" admitted Michelle, "Which is actually a bit depressing really".

"Might as well" shrugged Mort.

"Okay then, it's settled. I'll spend Valentines day with my friends instead of my girlfriend" said Steve.

Steve then walked off, a proud stride in his step which was unsual, since he usually slouched over when he walked. Michelle and Mort headed off the opposite direction. I always figured Mort and Michelle would date each other. She used to have a crush on him in kindergarten but I guess it's not there anymore.

I opened my locker to get out my books. A distinct horrible smell hit me right in the face. Not the usual smell of cheese and sweat...it smelled like perfume. Someone had been in my locker. Either a girl or a very confused guy.

I saw a little pink note stuck to the back of my locker. In big black letters were the following:

"Kyle, I think you're really cute ;) Be my Valentines? :) 3"

I couldn't believe it. I actually got a note. From a girl. Asking me out! I guess Steve wasn't going to be the only one with a girlfriend huh? The only problem was, I had no idea who wrote the note. I had two days to find out.
