The Sky looked about its own expanse

and went searching for itself

The storm came swiftly in its savage might

and the Sky said I am the storm

but the storm passed

The sun came singing and splashing through the air

and the Sky said I must be the sun

but the sun set

The night came sweetly on its slippered feet

and the Sky said I believe I am the night

but the night paled

The Sky looked about its own expanse

and did not find itself

I thought I knew me

and I have tried to search myself

I am what I think

but my thoughts are shifting sands

I am what I do

but my hands are hard to heed

I am what I believe

but my beliefs are pictures of others

So I looked about my own expanse

and I did not find myself
