She sat and wrote two valentine's cards that day.
That youthful thrill of loving not just one
Settled across the table cloth where a bunch of roses lay,
And she smiled at the flicker of excitement in a time so sombre.
Sealing the envelopes with the same kiss,
She checked her hair in the mirror and remembered who she was.
Guilt pricked at her skin like thorns
And shame seeped through her like fallen wine,
But she steadied herself and focused on the task at hand.
Slipping a card into her bag, she faced the moon
And the stars with their hopeless blessings of good luck.
It was a pleasant evening to say the least, and at times
The truth of who she was morphed away, leaving
Someone honest and committed in her place.
It was the compulsory kiss, which did it,
And shock and revolution at what she had done
Burnt black a heart once so pure and bold.
Despite everything, she visits her other valentine
And there are others there, rows and rows of lonely
Hearts not loved on a day like today.
She gives him 2 roses and a card
With that same kiss and she confesses what she could
Not confess before, but he says nothing
And only her words hang in the crispy air and
Hail down onto the lifeless grass below.
