Chapter 1

~today the large asteroid on a collision course with the earth will impact the pacific ocean~ ~it is expected to have significant effects~ ~the asteroid is an almost perfect sphere a half mile across~ ~the impact is predicted to happen in two hours about a hundred miles off the docks of San Francisco~ "damnit, all the fucking radio channels have the asteroid story on." Genny complained as she "I know, it's annoying as hell, nobody's playing music." Ian said. I was ignoring them and as I reached for the radio I was stopped "Carl we're all sick and tired of hearing about this damn asteroid story." Liya said grabbing my hand and pushing it away from the radio dial "Fine, but can we find some way to pass the time then?" I asked. "Sure, maybe we go to Nations or someplace to get lunch." Genny suggested "or we can go and watch what everyone's making a big deal about and see that asteroid crash." Liya suggested. We all looked at each other and grinned.

In an hour and a half we were on a cliff overlooking the ocean scanning the skies for the asteroid. The ocean was calm today, there were few waves and all were small; the sky was cloudless and a deep red. "I wonder up with the sky, I've never seen it like this before." Genny commented "it's probably the asteroid messing with the atmosphere or something." I said "it's still weird as shit man." Ian said "do you think we'll even be able to see it from here?" Genny asked "we'll see it enter the atmosphere for sure." Liya said. We sat for another twenty minutes before the asteroid hit, and it hit hard.

"Guys look!" Liya exclaimed pointing to an object streaking across the sky. When I found it I was shocked, it looked like a perfect sphere; the sphere seemed to have some strange designs on its surface. "You guys are seeing this right?" Ian asked, none of us responded. We watched the sphere for what seemed like hours until, just before it hit the horizon it exploded into a bright colorful explosion, so full of colors that it looked like those lights at the North Pole. "HOLY CRAP!" I exclaimed as I shielded my eyes from the light.

As the light faded away I saw the ocean receding, moving away from the shore. "Guys run, get to the truck right now!" I ordered "why?" Liya asked "yeah, why?" Genny asked as she rubbed her eyes "did you see the water just move out like that? Don't you know what that means?" I asked them. They both stared at me for a moment blankly. "A tsunami." Ian said "and one as big as what will hit here will wipe anything on this cliff away, so let's move!" I yelled.

We all ran to Ian's car and piled in as he started the engine, which stuttered to life. "Come on, move!" Liya yelled "hey, this truck's a piece of crap; it's not a Ferrari damnit!" Ian yelled back as he sped away from the cliff. The road turned and wound around the bluffs so Ian couldn't drive fast.

I could hear the sound of rushing water getting nearer and nearer as the seconds ticked by like hours. "Come on, come on, don't you fail me now." Ian said to the truck. All we had to do was get to the other side of these cliffs and the tsunami probably wouldn't hit us. Probably, I wished I could be more sure.

After what seemed like an eternity we came to the other side of the cliffs and Ian stopped the truck. "Why are you stopping?" Liya yelled "we're safe, safer than we were on that windy-ass road." Ian said "he's right, we should be safe here." I said. Liya and Genny looked at me for a second "the key word in that sentence was should, I don't like that word Carl." Liya said. Suddenly I felt the truck shaking from side to side and heard a loud cracking of stone. The next thing I knew there was a crunching sound, some screams, then I blacked out.

After that I remember voices and bright lights. I was in the hospital for a week unconscious after rocks had fallen on our truck. Luckily my friends and I had all survived the accident. When we woke up though things got strange, we all were horribly sick. We were throwing up and had splitting headaches, the weirdest part was that we weren't the only ones sick, we heard that thousands of people all had come down with whatever this was.

One Week Later

It had been a week since we all got sick and we were finally released from the hospital. Everyone was better actually, everyone had recovered around the same time and all of us had a reporter trying to get interviews with us, or a news channel calling to see if we'd call in for the morning news. I'd gotten so fed up with all the calls that I took out my phone's battery pack. It was two weeks before we were allowed back in school, when we were our classmates and teachers gave us a warm welcome, they held a welcome back assembly and in class helped us catch up. A lot of us still weren't feeling normal but hid this from the masses.

The next day all my friends and I met at brunch to talk "so, who else is feeling sick still?" Ian asked only Liya and Genny didn't raise their hands, Ian, and Jackie and I all still felt sick. "What do you think that thing was, I mean that was weird?" Ian said "I don't know, maybe there was a virus or bacteria that got spread by the meteor." Jackie, my shortest friend suggested "maybe, remember it never even hit the earth, it just exploded, that's weird." I said.

"Just wondering, Ian, Jackie, are you guys sleep-walking?" I asked "no, why?" Ian asked "I've been having trouble with it, I woke up in the woods this morning." I said "that's weird. Have you ever sleep-walked before?" Genny asked. I looked at them all with an expression of denial "not once." I said "dude we've just been through some serious shit, you're probably just rattled still." Ian said putting a hand on my shoulder. I felt a stinging static shock and twitched "ow, dude, what the fuck!" I swore "what? What'd I do?" he asked "you just static shocked me." I said.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to." Ian said holding his hands up "yeah, yeah. I know, man that hurt though." I said. "You don't think that-" Liya started "no, don't even say that, we don't have super powers!" Ian said stopping a truly stupid suggestion before it got off the ground. "Just let me test my theory jackass." Liya said gesturing for Ian to raise his hand. "Now move your hand closer to that locker when I tell you." Liya ordered "okay." Ian shrugged Liya watched Ian's hand intently "now, slowly." She said.

As his hand grew closer to the locker a small bolt of blue electricity jumped from his palm to the metal surface of the locker and dissipated to the surrounding lockers. "Whoa!" Ian exclaimed retracting his hand "you're kidding." I said "that's bullshit." Genny said jokingly "I'm right! Booyah!" Liya exclaimed. Suddenly I was spun around and was face to face with a girl, she had brown hair, brown eyes. She had high cheekbones, dimples, a small nose, thin lips, and a pointed chin and a large smile; giving her face a happy appearance. She grabbed my head and kissed me before pulling back.

"Whoa, what'd we miss?" Liya asked "what'd you guys miss? What'd I miss?" I asked. The girl suddenly had an expression of regret "I'm too early, aren't I." she said "uh, I guess, who are you again?" I asked. She let go of me and stepped back two steps, she suddenly seemed uncomfortable and awkward "I shouldn't say, and you can't mention this again." She said backing up more. "Wait, you can't just walk up, kiss me, and then not tell me who you are." I said. "I'm too early, too early, oh shit always too early or late, never on time." She muttered as she turned and ran, going around a corner in the hallway; I jogged to catch up with her but when I turned the corner she was gone, and the hall was empty. "Carl, wanna explain what the fuck just happened here?" Jackie asked "yeah, but I don't think I know myself." I said puzzled.

"so, with all this strange shit going on do you still think super powers are out of the question?" Liya asked sarcastically "shut up." Ian said frustrated as the bell for class rang. We all dispersed to our classes, Jackie and I walked to Geometry, a class we shared and had a mutual hatred for. We sat down and pulled or books and homework out of our backpacks and set them on our desks. I tried to focus but couldn't bring myself to entirely give my attention to the boring formulas of triangles.

Lunch…

My friends and I met at lunch behind the theater and we sat down to eat, while I was eating I heard wing beats behind me and felt pinpricks in my shoulder. "Oh shit!" Liya exclaimed "what I said turning and looking a crow in the eyes, it squawked once before flapping its wings and landing a few feet away. "The fuck?" Ian questioned "I'm just having one of those days aren't I?" I asked looking at my friends "probably." Genny replied "I still don't totally buy the superpowers thing." I said "wait, what? After Ian's electroshock deal, and the disappearing girl, you don't think at least Ian has a superpower?" Liya asked.

"no." I said just as a blur of blue and grey blazed passed me followed by a strong wind "do you hate being wrong?" Genny asked, I just sighed and hung my head. Suddenly a girl my age sprinted past at a ridiculous speed "BEN GET BACK HERE!" she yelled "was that Beth Tortese?" Jackie asked "not moving that fast it's not." Ian said. The blur sped our way again, this time I pushed my backpack out and it tripped, rolling on the ground twenty feet "oh crap." He coughed "that's Ben." Liya said.

Beth skidded to a halt "thanks, he took my phone." She said sending me a smile "no problem." I replied "Ben you hurt too bad?" Beth asked as she pulled her phone from his shirt pocket "nah, I'm good, the wind's just knocked out of me." Ben replied as Beth helped him to his feet. "so Carl, what were you gonna say about the superpower theory?" Ian said "you know what fuck it, some people got superpowers." I said giving in to the evidence. This was ridiculous, a bunch of people got superpowers from a weird asteroid, this sounded like a fucking comic book.
