Baby Boy Blues

by Starsinger

This is based on real events that happened last Saturday. Names have been changed in sensitivity to those who are grieving.

Your name was Samuel, Sam for short. You were named for your Grandfather. Your parents posted sonogram pictures, even pictures of your nursery on their facebook walls. Pictures of your mother, with a big smile on her face, were everywhere. When I saw her, I couldn't believe she could be even more beautiful than she actually was. I will never have children of my own, and I was envious.

We cheered when we heard your mother went into the hospital to be induced. You would soon be joining us in this big world. The first sign of trouble was a post by your aunt. Your mother had been taken in for an emergency c-section, and it was an hour later. Not ten minutes later, the horror shone through when we heard, "The baby's not going to make it!"

Hearts stopped, and we began to mourn. You lived a little while, you had gotten stuck in the birth canal and the chord wrapped around your neck. I've heard of this happening before, but this was the first time I knew this happened to people I knew and loved. According to your father, they almost lost your mother as well. They tried to save you, but he knew you were gone when they finally got you out. Your family was able to hold and love you before you died.

Your parents gave you to an organ bank, hoping to make sure other families did not lose a child as they had. They are comforted by your living on in others. We had you for nine months, we loved you. We were looking forward to meeting you. We wish your parents weren't going home to an empty crib.

Good bye baby boy Sam, we have the baby boy blues, but you'll always have a place in our hearts.
