Normal.
Chapter 6
So today we had jazz band, but I didn't go because Mason's in it and I thought if he was there at like six thirty, I would still be half asleep and I would end up saying something I would regret. But instead of going, I slept in but at six thirty, Summer called me. "Hey um there's something about the party I have to tell you," she says. "Couldn't it have waited until later? It's six in the morning!," I say still tired. "Yeah well the party isn't a normal party, it's a costume party," she says quickly. Suddenly I'm now awake, " WHAT DO YOU MEAN A COSTUME PARTY?! IN THE MIDDLE OF FREAKING FEBUARY?!," I scream into the phone. "Okay gotta go don't forget the costume," and with that she hangs up. Son of a biscuit. I walk over to JJ's room, "Knock knock." I walk in before he can say come in. "Oh my glob. What if I would have been naked?!," JJ asks. "Well you weren't so I think we're okay. Anyway Summer just called me and told me that the party is a costume party so you better have an old Halloween costume on hand," I say. "What?!," he says sitting up. "Yeah that's what I said. So just find something to wear by tonight okay?," I say leaving his room. He groans and lays back down. I walk back to my room and pick out my amazing outfit for the day. And and the amazing outfit of the day is…. A t-shirt and jeans! So basically the norm.
We leave for school in a rush, because JJ was taking forever. After we left, I was really starting to get nervous about seeing Mason. I mean I hadn't even apologized after Elysa's out burst, or even talked to him for that matter. I mean like when I walked into gym this morning, my stomach started to churn. Makayla say that my face was pale and she asked me what was wrong. She was there when Elysa said that to him. She saw me run out and saw a few tears. "Yeah I'm alright. Just nervous about talking to Mason," I say. "Oh yeah after Elysa," she says trailing off. I nod my head. The bell rings and the gym teacher comes in. "Okay now today we'll be doing a physical fitness day since we've been roller skating for the past couple of weeks," he says checking his clip board. Really? A physical fitness day?! C'mon man! He makes us do a few laps around the gym, then numbers us off for circuits. I honestly don't mind doing circuits. You get a number start there, then work your way around. The one's I hate doing are when you do like sixty sit ups, then run two laps, then do fifty push ups then run to laps, etc. But the worst part was Mason waved to me and smiled, while I was out of breathe and trying not to die from sprinting. So while he waved and smiled (which might I add was the most I've seen him smile) I sat there attempting to wave and smile, while I probably looked like a deformed whale. If that even made sense.
Other than me thinking about Mason all day, I thought about what I was going to wear tonight. I don't exactly keep Halloween costumes in my room for stuff like this. JJ was probably going to go as Frankenstein, his classic move as usual. But I wasn't sure what I was going to go as. So I sat and pondered this in Language and obviously the butt head teacher noticed I was looking at the snow falling out the window so he called on me. And of course I had no idea what we were talking about nor did I care but nevertheless, he still managed to embarrass me. He said, " Do we need to move you from the window Ms. Addison?" And I replied, " You could move me, but that wouldn't change the fact that I would still look outside, because the snow falling at a pace of molasses, is more interesting than you talking about your autograph collection." I knew that was a sure way to get me a detention, but I didn't care. He interrupted my thinking. He sat me after class, and even then I wasn't listening. He let me go on a warning, saying that I need to pay attention more often. I left still thinking about tonight and headed toward my locker. Lindsay was by my locker when I arrived. "So are you going to that party tonight?," she asked. I knew why she was asking. Me and my friends aren't exactly at the top of the social totem pole, as you probably noticed. I just have connections. Anyway, Summer has somehow become really popular, don't ask me how. "Yeah Summer's forcing me to go. So no I'm just going to watch her and Nolan make out," I say getting my American History book. "Ha sucks to be you. I have to go home and milk cows, otherwise I would be there to support er I mean watch you watch Nolan and Summer make out," she says. "Oh thanks that makes me feel one hundred percent better Lindy," I say before getting a drink. "Well, that's good. I gotta go to Language have fun in history," she says waving me goodbye. "Yeah will do," I mumble.
The history room is insane. Kids are throwing paper airplanes, which no I guess that's normal, but Mr. C isn't here. Balls is he late again!? Elysa sits in her sit staring at me. What does she want! She already publicly humiliated me, what more does she want. To be your friend you idiot, I think to myself. Well she screwed that up a long time ago when she started being a snobby little bitch and kicked me to the curb. Funny how someone you used to call your bff was now the person you wanted nothing to do with. But I guess that's life. Mr. C finally enters the room, yelling and practically busting my only good ear. Thank you! And he says we're rude. "Laura!," Derek whispers. "What?," I whisper back. "Do you know the answer to number twenty five through forty?," he asks. "Really?," I ask. "Yeah really," he says. I sigh, " Give me the paper." I write as neatly as I can. For being a guy he's always had extremely nice hand writing, unlike me. "There," I say handing back his paper. "Thanks! You're a life saver," he says. "Mhmm," I say. "Now does anyone have anything to turn in today?," Mr. C asks. Derek walks up and hands in the papers I just helped him with.
After about oh you know an hour worth of listening about the Louisiana purchase, it's time for art. My favorite class! Not. I sit there, again zoning out and not even listening to what she's saying. Something about clay and paper. Who knows. She hands me a sheet of paper and I just start doodling. A dinosaur with a mustache, a penguin, a smiley face. Then Mat, writes die on my paper. I erase it and continue doing nothing. "You do realize that our assignment goes on that paper right?," Connor asks. I look at my paper, "You do realize that pieces of paper have two sides right?" He sticks his tongue out at me and continues doing the assignment. Oh he's such a bad person.
JJ remembered to pick me up after school and the whole way home he was talking about how Ashley was going to be at the party. On the outside I was smiling and nodding my head, but on the inside, I was just thinking of horrible ways to embarrass JJ on Friday when she comes over. Once he pulls into the garage I head upstairs to try and find something to wear, which is normally never a problem for me. I think I still have an old cape from when we did the Wizard of Oz and the witch had to wear a black cape. I wasn't the witch, but I allowed them to use my cape. I think it's in the laundry room. I rush down the stairs and into the laundry room. I check the cupboards above the washer and dryer. Sure enough, there it is. A pitch black cape.
Since mom and dad will be home after we leave, we've asked the neighbors to watch the kids while we're gone. JJ walks down the stairs like Frankenstein. I roll my eyes, "We gotta got pick up Summer, unless you want her to be late and then she'll chew your head off." "Well if she wants to get there so badly on time, why doesn't she drive?," JJ asks. " I don't know! Let's just go!," I say shoving him out the door and into the garage. He starts the car and we're off. We pick up Summer and she's freaking out. "Nolan is expecting me to be there right away! It's already five!," she says. JJ mocks her in the drivers seat. She sighs and mumbles something that I can't understand. Finally, we arrive at Nolan's house. This house is bigger than ours. It's huge. I can see from the glass windows they have an indoor pool in their living room. Summer squeals and runs inside. JJ looks at me with a puzzled look on his face. "You know Summer and her pretty boys," I say as I walk towards the door. He laughs, "Yeah. Unlike you who goes for a guy with brains." "Shut up," I say as we walk in. When we walk in it's amazing. The living room's been turned into a dance floor, and yeah just wow. Ashley motions for JJ to come and join her, "Gotta go." He flees to her side, leaving me all alone. I spot Summer, and her and Nolan are talking. He whispers something in her ear. She nods her head and they go up the stairs. Oh glob oh glob! I think to myself. My horrible thoughts are interrupted, " Boo," someone whispers in my ear. I turn around, almost punching them in the gut. "Woah, no need to abuse me," he says. "Ahaha funny Mason," I say. He ignores me, "Okay let me guess. You have black hair and black eye shadow on. And you have two marks on your neck and your Dracula," he says. "Oh wow! You are almost as bright as Einstein!," I say sarcastically clapping. "I try very hard," he says. The music starts up and people are yelling and screaming. I look down at where Mason is standing. "You should move," I say. "Why? Does me standing here annoy you?," he asks. "No but it does break the rules," I say. "What? They have rules at a party?," he asks surprised. I point to a list pinned up against the wall.
Party! Rules.
1) Drink until they're cute
2) Don't do anything you don't want to be tagged on Facebook
3) If you're standing on the dance floor you must dance, The floor is clearly marked what is dance floor and what is floor.
4) Any drama bombs will be bitch slapped
5) Go big or Go home
After he reads them he looks back at me. I point to where he's standing and where I'm standing. "Balls," he says. "What?," I ask. "I can't dance." "So why don't you just move?," I ask. "Ehhh too much work," he pulls me on to the hard wood floor. "You seriously did not just do that did you?," I shout over the music. "What?! I can't hear you!," he says smiling. While I epically fail at dancing he stands there watching. A Justin Bieber song comes on. "Oh c'mon! You at least have to dance to Justin!," I say holding in my laughter. "I can't dance. I'm a gringo remember?," he asks. That's right. When we were playing Just Dance 4 in Language for our "How to" speeches, I said that he danced like a white boy aka gringo in Spanish. "C'mon just dance for this song so I don't look like a complete idiot," I say. "Fine!," he shouts over the music. We laugh and dance until the songs almost over. I stop for a break and he stops too. He gives me a look. One I've never seen before on his face. Suddenly, he's leaning in. And then the music stops and we're kissing.
I quickly pull away. After I do, he stares at me. Tears swell in my eyes. God damn it! Why can't he stop making me cry for once! I run out of the room and up the stairs, where Summer recently was with Nolan. I run all the way down to the last room and enter it. Go figure Summer and Nolan are in there making out like there's no tomorrow. "Uhhh is there a balcony in here?," I ask sniffling. "Laura! And yeah! Geez learn to knock!," I ignore Summer and walk out on to the balcony. From there I climb on the roof. After I get to a comfortable spot on the roof, I bring my knees to my chest and cry. Then I hear Mason's deep booming voice, "Hey did Laura come in here?" "Good glob! Can't you people read sign!?," Summer asks. "There was no sign on your door," Mason says. "Oh. Well Laura's on the roof," Summer says. Thanks Summer. I really wanted to be alone but hey that's cool too. He crawls up and sits by me. He doesn't say anything, he just sit there with me, watching the sun set behind the river. He clears his throat and I look over, " I-I'm sorry about what happened. Back there I mean." I don't move I just sit there. "Look it get it that your mad and all but at least talk to me," he says fading softly towards the end. "I don't have anything to say," I mumble. He obviously heard me, "Oh okay." We sit in silence. Soon the moon comes out and the stars do as well. "That's one thing I like about not living in a big city," he says, " I can see the stars." I look up. I forgot how pretty they were. "I'm sorry I freaked out back there," I say still staring at the stars. He looks at me, and I can feel his gaze. He laughs, "Well you've obviously never been kissed before." I blush at the fact, because it's true. "Oh," he says quietly. He must have figured it out. "Look I really like you Mason, but I'm not sure if I really want to date anyone," I say. "Why? You dated Kyler," he says. I laugh, " If you call two minute conversations a relationship sure. But we never like did anything. We never talked, kissed, held hands, anything. We never even went on a date," I say. "Ah," he says. After awhile he speaks again, "We don't exactly have to date. I mean we can just hang out and see what happens from there." When I look over he has a small smile on his face. I smile back, "Sure but my parents are going to want to meet you." "Oh don't worry so will my mom," he says. We stare at the stares. He reaches for my hand, but I quickly pull it away, then slowly putting it back to it's original position. "So when should I meet your mom?," I ask. "Umm tomorrow?," he asks. I laugh, " Okay taking things a bit fast but then that means you get to meet the Addison family on Friday." "Seems legit to me," he says. We laugh one last time and stare at the sky. My phone buzzes. I know it's JJ looking for me. The last time I checked the clock it was five thirty, now it's almost midnight. Funny how time flies when you having fun. "Okay I gotta go," I say standing up on the roof. He stands up too. Damn even when we're on the roof he's still taller than me. "Goodnight," he says. I smile, "Night." I turn to leave, but then stop. I turn around and kiss him on the cheek. It take my tippy toes to get there. He rubs his cheek and blushes. I blush and leave. Leaving the two of us blushing and smiling.
