Death to Alice
The open skies are crowded with menacing clouds,
Threatening the shards of sunlight out of existence.
The heavy weight of rain lingers in the space between me and salvation,
Between me and my shattered dreams of the peace I have longed for.
The path back to sanity is in a haze of confusion and distrust,
The path forward to reality is a mangled web of lies.
The past, present and future wait in solitude in one time frame,
All waiting for me to predict and manipulate the next expectation.
The rustleling wind unsettles the silence and whistles in turmoil,
Lightning threatening to tear the seams of the low hanging clouds.
As the time for decisions comes closer like judgement day,
The pain and fear of everything slowly becomes a memory of a weakness.
The past inch the scars forward, the future closed to any possibilities,
The only stable state being the present and the steady shuffle of feet.
One in front of the other, slowly but surely making their way towards the edge,
One step closer everytime to the end of a difficult journey.
The ground is sturdy underfoot yet shaky enough to force a stumble,
"Are you sure of this? Is this the end of everything I could be?"
With a conflicted mind and a numb heart, the feet stumble on regardless,
A mind of their own moving them forward to an end of dreams.
Memories force themselves into a state of logic and bring the feet to a stop,
"Remember all that you are. Never give up on your dreams. Ever."
With a single tear falling down the cheek, the head lowers to honour it,
Feeling it crawl down like all the hopes and dreams that were once reality.
The feet may have stopped but the heart still lingers forward,
Slowly fading into the distance of the path that would have been followed.
But not anymore, standing here and watching it leave me behind,
Watching my Wonderland fade into a haze of tears and broken dreams.
