"So you're sure you're okay with living with me?" Claire asked as she helped me out of the wheel chair. I hadn't needed it, but apparently it was a rule that all patient of the hospital take the wheel chair.
"I have no where else to go, and we are friends, yes?" I said as I followed her. She nodded. "Well, it's not much, but there's enough room for us. I have a room mate though, I'm sure you'll get along fine." She told me as she opened up her car. I had learned a lot from Claire in the hospital, almost as much as Joshua had taught me.
I got into the car and thought about the psychiatrist I had to talk to, he'd been interested in my dream. In a weird way too, I just told him what I thought he wanted to hear and said I hadn't had any strange dream since then.
And I hadn't, because I hadn't slept since the cave with Joshua. I wasn't sure what would happen if I did, where would I wake up? Would I even wake up? I sighed and wished I hadn't lost my memory. Maybe I knew why this was happening to me, but I had to remember first.
"Anyway, my roommate's a girl. Her name's Naomi. I think you'll get along fine; she doesn't warm up at first to new people, so it might take her a while to be friendly. Sorry in advance-"'
I felt my eyelids getting heavy, but I didn't realize why. "I wonder if this is the dream, or maybe both are real?"
"Bub, wake up. We've got a big day ahead of us." I heard. "That strange, it sounds like Joshua," I thought as I slowly opened my eyes.
In front of me was a spider, happily wrapping up a bug it had caught in its web. This wasn't Claire's car; I was back in the cave. I sat up and looked around. Joshua was rummaging through the dead mans back pack.
"How long was I out?" I asked. The dolls head turned towards me. "What's that supposed to mean kid?" "Was I asleep for a week?" I asked him. "No," Joshua let out a grunt that might have been a laugh. "Come on, we need to check that camp site, it was too dark yesterday. And you need to eat," He instructed.
When we were pretty close to the camp I decided to ask Joshua about dreams. "Joshua, do you know what a dream is?" "Yeah, why?" "So then, they exist here too?" I wondered. "What do ya' mean "here too"?
I stopped and leaned against a tree. "Last week when I fell asleep," "last week?" "Yesterday, sorry," I corrected myself. "When I fell asleep, I woke up somewhere else. In a hospital. I asked a nurse where you were and she thought I was crazy. Apparently dolls like you don't exist there. The doctors also told me that this was a dream, but here I am again," I said.
"I didn't fall asleep for a week there; I wasn't sure what would happen if I did. What's happening to me?" Joshua starred at me for a while. "I think we should keep this a secret between us, okay?" He asked and I nodded. "There's a place, like a library, it might have some answers about you. If we can get there, we might have a home and answers," Joshua said to me.
What's it called?" I asked him. "The tower, it used to have another name, but no one remembers," Joshua said as I started to walk again.
As we entered the camp site I wondered why anyone would leave it. I could see much more than I had yesterday/last week. I went in to inspect a tent when Joshua called me over.
"We got a live one," He said as I got near him. He gestured to inside the tent. We walked in slowly to see a figure asleep on a cot. "Hello?" I asked. The figure sprung up and lunged at me. I saw the glint of metal as the figure moved. As soon as she touched me something strange happened. I felt something move in my left eye and the world seemed to slow down. I moved out of the way of the figure and sat down.
Time speed back up and she ran into the tent wall. "Whoa girlie, we're not lookin' for trouble," Joshua laughed. The figure turned to face us and or the first time I saw who, or what, its was.
Joshua was right, it was a girl, she had no shirt on, but her hair and fur seemed to cover her up. She was a strange mix between a human woman, and a wolf. She had dark brown hair in dreadlocks, with darker brown fur. A tooth stuck out from her lip (snout?), and her eyes were yellow. She had many piercing on her pointed wolf ears. She looked a bit angry and confused. I noticed she had claws at the ends of her fingers and feet.
"Who are you?" she asked. She spoke in a strange accent. "My name is Free, and that's Joshua, who are you?" I asked calmly. She starred at me. "How do I know you don't wish to harm me?" she asked. "Well, I have amnesia, and he's a doll. I can't remember any reasons to harm people,"
Joshua chuckled. "Why don't you calm down and have something to eat? Eh?" Joshua said producing some sort of meat he'd found. She starred at the meat in the dolls hands and took it. She sniffed it and decided it was okay. "You seem to tell the truth, my name is Rush," "I can see why," Joshua said in an amused tone.
She took another bite. "So why are you alone?" I asked her. "My pack was killed by the second blast. I was the only survivor, and I haven't found another pack that will accept me." Rush explained. "I woke up alone in a forest," I said. "Do you want to come with us?" "Where is your destination?" Rush questioned. "Does it matter? You have none, no one these days does," Joshua said. "You speak the truth," Ruth nodded. "I shall join you then,"
"Were going to the tower," I said. "You act like a pup at times," Rush commented. I didn't really know how to react to that, so I just munched on some meat Joshua handed me.
Out of the two worlds I'd been in, this one was the most interesting. But I had a strange feeling the other one was going to get interesting too.
"If I only knew I wasn't dreaming,"
