Chapter 2

The next day the papers had varing information about the two robberies, but none could provide anything acurate. A touch of washable paint and no one even looked twice at the 2 blue heart necklace the lady falcon wore that day. The elevator of the large building opened to the 40th floor and, along with a few others, the large falconess stepped out. Wendy was tall, being a few inches over 6 feet. She walked stright at all times, her blue feathers reflecting the light at her wings were lines of white, though when she folded her wings, the lines connected, forming rings. In her late 20's, Wendy Jenner had kept her body trim, mostly to preform nocturnal activites like last night. But such things she did as a more as a hobby or occasional paid project. In the times between she was a free lance accountant, people coming to her for personal or business needs.
Jennifer, her secratary for three years now, smiled as the falconess entered.
"Morning, Wendy." the young, all white mink smiled to her employer. "Your coffe is ready, the Loftin account is waiting for your look over and the McNally client pushed the interview back a few days."

Wendy would've smiled if her beak allowed it.
"Thank you, Jennifer. I'm glad I gave you the keys to come in early." She patted the mink on the shoulder as she walked past to her office. "Don't forget to tell me about your date with Alex last night."
Wendy could hear the young woman give a nervous giggle as her office door close. Good girl, but it's good she doesn't know what really goes on. And not even a glance at the necklace she , well. It's not good to get so much attention about such things anyway.

Most of the day was taken up with work, until her desk phone rang just before 3. This was a private call, as very few had her direct number and Jennifer took all the other calls first, using the intercom when Wendy's attention was needed. And given last night, she could proably guess who it was.
"Afternoon, Fant." Wendy answered the phone.
"Hello." came a softly growling voice on the other side. It was definatly Fantasia, her wolf contact at the service. Wendy made a note to ask Fantasia what was really the name of the service.
"I see you were busy last night," Fantasia was saying. "Which of the items did you pick up?"
"Now, now, Fant," Wendy loved calling her that because the other hated it. "I would know nothing about. Besides, I'm sure you had another reason for calling."
The wolf on the other side sighed. "Of course. I was calling to ask what you thought of a chance of Clouds tonight..."

Wendy smiled to herself. CloudStalker was the codename the service had given her since she first started. Fantasia always called asking for her in the form of a weather report.
Wendy was silent for a few seconds as she considered. Proably some stupid assignment again, but the pay was good.
"Where did you expect it tonight?"
"At the Jeweled Shell Theatre."
"I see." Wendy had heard of an event going on there, but what escaped her memory right now. "I'd say a 60% chance."
There was a loud cough of surprise on the other. The percent was their way of agreeing on a payment.
"We were thinking more of 45%."
"Well, I'm sorry. I'm not a weather person after all....I wish you luck on any showing...."
"Wait!" Fantasia was tring to halt Wendy hanging up. ""I'm sure we will be happy with a 50% chance."
Wendy considered. $50,000 dollars was a lot for one night's work and she hadn't gotten anything valuable recently.
"Okay, then. 50% and you get your cloud cover tonight."
"Good. I'll send you the information by the regular courier."
"Great. I look forward to seeing you tonight, Fant."
The wolf's voice sounded a little please just before she hung up. "Actually, we're hoping we won't have to see you." With that said, the line went dead.

5 O'clock finally came around and Wendy was still waiting for her information to show up. Jennifer poked her head through the door.
"Night, Wendy." the mink said with a smile.
Wendy looked up from her papers. "Oh, goodnight, Jennifer." The door just started to close when the mink opened it again.
"Oh, before I forget again, this envelope came for you about a half hour ago, but I was busy with the checks."
Wendy nodded. "Ah, good." She stood and took the envelope. "It's for a new client."
The mink smiled. "That's great." Jennifer turned with a wave and headed out.
Once Wendy was sure she was gone, the falconess sat at her desk again to open the package. Inside were two items. The first was a photo of a male fox somewhere in his 30's, as far as Wendy could tell. The second item was a paper, with the information she needed typed on it.
"Hello, CloudStalker. The photo enclosed is that of Mark Tome. He is from a wealthy family that owns a private island in the South Pacific. They have created a stir with thier recent announcment of a new type of medicine and have sent Mark over here as a representitive. Tonight he is expected to annouce what who they intend to give the reasearch and actual stuff to. What we fear is that some of out rival countries will be upset if they do not get it and will try to kill him if the wrong words come out. We need you to be there and watch for such activity and prevent anything from happening to Mr. Tome."

Wendy reread the letter to be sure she really know what she was getting into. An asassanation attempt? Good thing she ask for more money as this was not her usual thing, but she did have the experience of being on both sides of a sniper's barrel. Now she remembered the event. It wasn't due to start until 9pm, so she still had time to think of the best way to work this. An idea finally came onto her. Fant wouldn't like it, but Wendy had her own style of doing things and the service knew this. Around 8, she packed a small bag and opened a locked drawer in her desk. From it she removed a black outfit similar to the one she wore last night. It wasn't easy to find something that would disguise her figure so well, save for the wings. Fortunatly, avians like her were common enough in a city this big so she was not worried. Making sure her good dress was packed nice, plus a few others things she might need, she opened the window in her office. The wind wasn't blowing too much tonight as she stepped onto the ledge. Locking the window, Wendy looked out over the night scene. She could just make out the theatre among the taller buildings, but the bright search lights made it easy to pick out. She spread her wings and leaped from the ledge. About halfway down, she caught an updraft that lifted just below the surrounding building tops and sped on her way. As far as she knew this would be a standard 'protect-the-body' assignment and she would return to work tomorrow a little bit richer. For an accountant and professional thief, it's amazing how much she really didn't know.
