Bianca awoke only to find herself not slumped against a table, but in a crisp, white hospital bed, surrounded by her anxious friends.
Kenny and Sandy, who had missed the scuffle between Bianca and Zoe which had taken place earlier, were more concerned than anyone else, even Ruby, who, even at the slightest scratch, became terrified over the welfare of the casualty.
She could've been a nurse, if it wasn't for the fact that there were very few brain cells, if any, floating around in her skull.
Hey, Bianca! You OK!? Gosh, you look awful! Need me to fluff up your pillow or anything?
Sandy, who was a very caring black-and-tan lioness, was fussing over Bianca like a newborn child.
I'm OK! Really I am! was Bianca's desperate cry as Sandy began to sweat nervously.
You don't look OK, though!
I. Am. OK.
You sure?
Yes!
Positive?
Grr...
OK, OK!
Sandy, seeing the frustrated look on Bianca's injured yet fully functional face, backed away slowly, smiling rather nervously.
Bianca, who was now beginning to calm down, turned to Mwogo, who had been silent this whole time, to ask her a question.
What happened to Zoe? Shouldn't she be here grovelling for mercy?
Mwogo hesitated slightly, then, in a very dull tone, replied,
She's in the intensive care ward...
WHAT!?
Bianca blinked in dis-belief, staring at Mwogo, who was nodding her head very slowly indeed.
Yes. You see ... ehe ... Zoe's on drugs!
Mwogo paused to acknowledge the deathly stillness, before continuing.
That gum she placed in her mouth was drugged. It's been messing with her head so much that sometimes she can't figure out what's right and what's wrong, therefore, she often acts without thinking.
Bianca, who was slowly beginning to feel guilty for what she'd said earlier, decided to try and help a little.
We should help her before something terrible happens!
Kenny and Sandy nodded in unison.
Yeah! We oughtta help her!
Ruby, who was always rather slow at grasping the concept, nodded a few seconds later.
Yeah, she could die!
Mwogo smiled weakly at her friend's determination, before turning back to Bianca, who would've nodded as well, if it wasn't for the huge bulk of bandages that imprisoned her cheek.
I'd better go check on her, she is she's awake an' all...
Without another word, Mwogo exited the small area, cloaked by pinkish white curtains, and left for the intensive care ward.
Ruby, who was, as I've said before, three sandwiches short of a picnic, grinned after her friend and said, Tell Zoe I said hi!
Bianca groaned quietly at her absent-minded companion, before addressing her friends.
Mwogo seems upset. Zoe was her best friend and now she's suffering beyond our imagination. I think you guys should go with her...
I couldn't agree more, Bianca, replied Sandy, glaring at her boyfriend who was falling asleep in the chair he was sitting in.
Please ignore Kenny, he hates hospitals, and he was up all last night cleaning and fixing his skateboard.
Bianca grinned.
No matter where you take him, no matter what he does, skateboards will always be the first thing on his mind.
Kenny, who was now snoozing peacefully, was mumbling something , But ... that was my trick first...
Sandy giggled to herself, and turned to Ruby, who was just standing there, staring blankly at a wall.
No one was quite sure what was going on in Ruby's fluffy head when she was staring at things, one could only hope it was something non-evil.
So, it's settled then. We'll all go to see how Mwogo and Zoe are getting on ... and well ... Bianca, you're gonna stay here! announced Sandy, trying to break the uneasy silence that had fallen upon the group.
It's not like I'm going to do anything else... was Bianca's half-hearted reply.
OK then. Bianca, we'll be seeing you later!
Marching over to her skateboard-crazy boyfriend, jerking him awake, she turned and left the cubicle, Kenny at her heels like a prissy poodle.
Ruby, who only caught on that they were leaving as the cotton curtains were parted, quickly dashed over, grinning apologetically.
Bianca laughed quietly at the sheer stupidity of her friend, before leaning back even further into her puffy pillow.
Today was going to be a long day.
