Author’s Notes: Another somewhat depressing poem that came to me in school… On one note, though, I get the feeling that people may look at me as a very troubled individual when I’m not. I’m really not as sad as my poem’s say; I’m just an angst lover. Sorry if I worried anyone…
Warnings: Angst.

Things I Should Have Learned…I should have learned,
Before I was hurt,
That not all children smile,
For the same, bright-eyed reasons,
That children should.
I should have learned,
Before I found myself lost,
That the roads do not always lead back home.
I should have learned,
Before I fell,
That life is never easy.
I should have learned,
Before I knew tears,
The pain and fear of death.
I should have learned,
Before I was burned,
That love is not a given.
I should have learned,
Before I swallowed my pride,
That not all are forgiving.
I should have learned,
Before I drowned,
The harsh realities of human nature.
I should have learned,
Before I found myself broken,
That words can scar,
And sticks and stones can only bruise.
But most of all,
I should have learned,
Before I found myself so empty,
That my soul belongs only to me,
And a caged bird sometimes doesn’t sing.
