Public Space

Public Space

You can see them in the city.

You can watch them in the mall.

In every crowd you'll find a few:

Young or old, short or tall.

The boy finishes his burger

And looks furtively around,

Then drops the paper wrapper

Right there onto the ground.

Only metres to his right

There was a rubbish bin.

He had only a few steps to walk

To drop his rubbish in.

If he were in his own home

His parents would deplore

Smelly fast food containers

Left on the living room floor.

But here in the city

This charming little tyke

Thinks the space belongs to no one

And he can do what he feels like

But he is wrong about this.

This filth that collects by the ton

Is everybody's problem

It belongs to everyone.

So next time you're going to litter

Please remember what I've said.

Not even a dog will take a crap

In the middle of its own bed.
