I - The Explosion

The man silently moved over to another part of the room. Kit realised that there was a computer screen on the wall that was the size of the Mona Lisa. With a touch of a button, the screen came into focus and a large picture of the man himself appeared. By it's side was a golden bird with sparkling rubies for eyes.
As the red-haired boy muttered something about height, resolution and pixies, a deadly scarlet timer appeared on the screen destroying the man's smiling face.
The time was counting down from twenty seconds. The boy Will rummaged in the desk and though Kit tried to hurry him up by telling him to press the green button, it was no use.
Ten seconds... did his mother know that he loved her... eight seconds...was there enough time to get them all out? Six seconds... he ferried the girls across to the door... three...two...one.

An explosion hit him with immense force. Kit felt the strength of the nails dig into him and his final thought was that, yet again, he had failed to prevent it...
