'Twas nucleic, and all Miescher’s genes
Did Chase and Hershey in the cell;
All nitrogenous was the cytosine,
And phosphates all were well.

"Beware the helicase, my strand!
The helix it will all unwind!
Beware the adenine and ban
Pneumococcus unkind.”

He took prokaryotes in hand:
Long time pyrimadines he sought--
So rested he by G-C, A-T,
And ribosomed in thought.

As into glycine thought he fell,
The helicase, enzymes aflame,
Anticodon’ed through the organelle,
And ligased as it came!

One two! One two! And through and through
The Watson-Crick went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He double-helixed back.

"And hast thou slain the helicase?
Come to my arms, my purine boy!
O RNA! Callooh! Callay!"
He intron’ed in his joy.

'Twas nucleic, and all Miescher’s genes
Did Chase and Hershey in the cell;
All nitrogenous was the cytosine,
And phosphates all were well.
