Shards

i look back again
they're not following.

i wish they'd just leave me alone.
they never understand, they're shallow, insignificant -
or perhaps not. perhaps it is i who is the insignificant one.

they come, armed with hard-edged words
and expect me to defend myself with my sword
but don't understand that the two can't clash
and i can't win

they chase me while i chase broken dreams they've trampled on
it's never gonna end

and i look back again, to see that they've made camp and are resting the night away.
i step forward, bend down and pick up the glass.

that's all i have left.
