                                                                                  Chapter Seven: The Confrontation

Roxanne lay thinking next to Arthur who as usual was snoring like a pig, she was worried about what Arthur had promised, how could she trust him when he had hurt her so badly? Arthur snorted and mumbled something in his sleep…well at least he wasn’t snoring anymore. Roxanne listened carefully and froze at the mention of the name. “Jolene…oh yes” Arthur said with a smile.

“That’s it!” Roxanne snarled “I’m going to talk this over with her and decide who gets Arthur and hopefully it will be me, I can’t compete against her she’s too beautiful.” Arthur rolled over his tongue hanging out his mouth like a dog, Roxanne sighed, sometimes she felt she would be better without him but she could never be happy without him at her side.

Next morning Roxanne awoke and found Arthur was out of bed already. She got dressed and went down the stairs and found him reading the paper in his favorite chair. “Morning!” She said brightly and perched herself on the arm of the chair but Arthur barely glanced at her

“Morning” he said gruffly still upset with her for banning him from seeing Jolene but he was going over to her later that and she wouldn’t know about it.

“What do you want for breakfast?” Roxanne asked with a smile which Arthur didn’t return

“Whatever you’re planning on doing, I’m not bothered” He said flicking over the pages.

“Fine…I’ll make toast” Roxanne said getting a little fed up with his attitude

“Fine by me” Arthur called after her as she went into the kitchen “cause I won’t be here to eat it” he added quietly. He got up and sneaked over to the door, checked to see if Roxanne was busy and went out. Roxanne came back in after about five minutes and looked round with a frown “Arthur?” She called and ran up the stairs “Arthur are you there?” She got no reply. She stood thoughtfully for a moment and finally it sank in “Oh Arthur how could you?!” She exclaimed “I only asked you that one thing and you ignore me!” She ran out the house and slammed the door behind her.

Arthur reached Jolene’s house before Roxanne caught him up and knocked on the door, Jolene appeared at the door in a thin silk night shirt and her hair tied back neatly. “Well hi again, miss me already?” She said with her usual playful smile

“Couldn’t live without seeing you!” Arthur said and ran his hand across her cheek “Roxanne actually tried to ban me from coming to see you but I’d risk lions and wild dogs to reach you.” Jolene grinned and moved out the way

“That’s so sweet! Why don’t you come in and I’ll get you something to eat…” Arthur did as he was told and Jolene shut the door quietly.

Roxanne followed the rough dirt trail for a while and then pause “Am I coming the right way? I’m sure Jolene said her house was nearer…” She dismissed this thought and carried on walking. Finally she saw a small house just up ahead and sighed “At last! I can’t believe Arthur would walk all this way! He wouldn’t walk a step for me.” That upset her a lot but she knew it was time to finish this with Jolene once and for all. She walked up the dirty front door and banged on it heard, Jolene appeared at the door, now fully dressed in jeans and a checked top. She smiled nastily at Roxanne and leant against the door frame. “Well if t isn’t little Roxy…come for your boyfriend?” She hissed cruelly.

“No…just to talk with you” Roxanne said ignoring the hate in Jolene’s voice “please just listen to me…I love Arthur and it upsets me so much to hear him call your name out in his sleep and to deceive me by coming here. I can’t compete with you through looks as you’re the most beautiful woman for miles around here” Roxanne paused and Jolene shifted feet. “Please Jolene don’t take my boyfriend from me, I’m aware that you could if you wanted to and that you can but you don’t want him. You could have any man you wanted but I could never love again, he’s the only one for me…my happiness is in your hands, Jolene” Roxanne looked very pitiful with tears running down her cheeks. Jolene thought about this but remained silent

“Why should I do anything for you Roxanne?” She said finally

“Because I love him, you don’t you’re only using him because you don’t want me to be happy.”

“Very true Roxy…so why should I give him back to you? Why shouldn’t I just keep him and destroy him like I have done so many others?”

“I’m hoping you’ll take pity on me for what I’ve just said…it hurts me to see him obsessed with a woman who doesn’t want him…who never will…he deserves better than that.” Jolene cocked her head to one said and flicked a hair out her eye

“He’s here now Roxy, probably can here us…”

“I want only you Jolene!” Arthur shouted and Jolene looked triumphant but Roxanne kept her nerve.

“Jolene…please give him back to me…” Jolene stared at her like she was mad to stay and maybe she was “I had to talk with you, Jolene, my joy depend on whatever you deicide to do…please let me have him.” Jolene looked somewhere else and remained silent to the pleas “Jolene? Jolene?”
