Childhood is waking up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons,imagining yourself in new adventures.

Childhood is playing with rollie-pollies in Grandma’s plastic tubs full of sand.

Childhood is building cardboard-box forts and sleeping under tents made of blankets and chairs.

Childhood is reaching into a strawberry-shaped cookie jar.

Childhood is zooming down the driveway with brother and sister
in the Red Flyer wagon.

Childhood is wishing for one more token.

Childhood is blazing trails at Girl Scout Camp, and missing the hay pile completely as you leap off the swing.

Childhood is washing dishes standing on a Care Bear stepstool.

Childhood is following purple paper footprints to the Purple People Eater, who lives in the teacher’s locked closet.

Childhood is riding on foam floats with friends at the community pool, and pretending you are the survivors of an ocean voyage.

Childhood is romping through a mom-made obstacle course and carnival games at your birthday parties.

Childhood is having to put a stuffed animal in the garage sale, and after crying over the loss, protecting the rest with your life.

Childhood is waiting impatiently to grow up, and when you finally do, wishing you hadn’t…
