A/n: Don’t ask.

Look Twice

Look twice at her,

The girl with the happy smile

The shiny, silken hair

And the sweet, sing-songy voice

She hides behind that curtain of gold,

And you can’t hear

The bitter notes,

Flat

Toneless

Dead

And you can’t see

That her smile is painted

And her teeth

Are covered

In Vaseline.

Look twice at her

Everyone’s sweetheart

Ever-agreeable

Ever fresh and clean

She runs away from the demons

And you can’t see

The rebel

The woman

Who thinks for herself;

The dirt

The sweat

The coal in the diamond.

Look twice at her,

This beautiful creature

With her smiling eyes

And pretty face

She puts them on in the morning

With her concealer

Her lipstick and rouge

And you can’t see

The pain,

The thoughts

The feelings

Surpressed by the image

Of the ever-fun-loving

Sunshine girl.

She hides behind

Clouds of ignorance

And fear

Look twice at her,

My sunshine, goodtime girl

Effervescent, lovelypartygirl

She hides her head

Beneath the sand

Ducks under the waves

To hide from the fact

That she might one day

Have to face the world alone…

To hide from herself.
You can’t see

What I see;

The desperate woman-child

Lonely, jaded

Sad and frightened girl
The chip in the stemware

The blot on the page

The stain in the sofa cushion

You can turn it over

Turn a blind eye

But it’s still there

If you look twice.
