Today in English, we
Killed
A poem
A young, strong,
Healthy, innocent poem
Only just beginning to live
Full of potential
(And similes)
We placed it on the
Graffiti covered operating table
Of a classroom desk
And began.

Firstly we measured it,
The depth of the
Images
To the nearest millimeter;
The effectiveness of the
Metaphors
To the nearest effectimeter;
The power of the
Hidden message
To the nearest powimeter.

Today in English, we
Killed
A poem
Un-anaesthetised, it screamed
As we began to probe deeper
Below the surface, the
Poem seemed different
Less interesting.
Shallow metaphors faded slowly,
Or burst suddenly with a shout.
The deeper ones cried for their
Lost playmates.
Ruthlessly our teacher pushed us on.

Today in English, we
Killed
A poem.
When the lesson ended, it
Gasped its final, dying breath
And expired.
A good lesson's work
Said the teacher.
