Chapter 14

Prologue

The year is 2105AD after the fifteen years of devastating war and three years of peaceful time in which we managed to unite the survivors of the war under a common banner. When we human's first ventured into space for colonisation, we exposed ourselves to danger unknowingly. Many of our species thought that it was impossible to have sentient races that were as aggressive or more aggressive than our own. We were wrong... VERY WRONG.

The fifteen-year war had been kind on the human race, though our race just barely managed to escape extinction. We managed to understand physical sciences a lot better than before. Just as World War II had provided us with colour movies, and technology for space exploration the fifteen-year war gave us uncountable blessings. As someone long ago said "War truly does bring out creative part of our mind!" Matter manipulation through nano technology, extending the life-span of the average human being by almost forty years and cures for AIDS, CANCER and the common cold viruses are to name a few. As the world came to grips with what had happened earlier it was necessary for us all to forgive each other and start from the beginning. New Hope came as it did after World War II in the form of development of technology, which would let us travel through space and onto other planets.

The first wave of human colonists took off from EARTH on July 1st 2105. It had been three years of peace and it looked like it was going to last a long time. The first wave was made of 303 ships heading for the planet of SOLARIA, which was the closest. The planet had been under observation for over a year before the planet was declared safe for the colonists. Little we knew of the planet, and in our excitement we did not do things the right way. We had chosen to invade the world of the mightiest race in the galaxy. Their race was so sophisticate; their technology did not emit electromagnetic radiation. It was a trap.

Let me explain this before I go any further… Long ago the eldest and the wisest of all sentient beings in the galaxy made it known that they would not tolerate any race that interfered with races that had not yet achieved hyperspace travel. Though they left the galaxy many millennia ago they left behind one of their machines. A machine that had powers to destroy entire solar systems in a matter of seconds. It was called the Guardian. Its function was to deter hyperspace races from breaking the rule. It did its job very well, destroying over fifty races to safe guard the large number of budding vulnerable races. The Solarians waited until we had hyperspace travel technology before they set the trap for us. Our colonist ships were destroyed as soon as they were within weapon’s range. There was a garbled distress signal sent before all the ships were destroyed.

The journey to Solaria was a month long in hyperspace using our technology, but we assumed that the Solarians would take half as long and so we started to get ready for war. We were not mistaken in our assumption; it took eighteen days for the Solarian battle contingent to arrive at our solar system. Once in our solar system an epic battle for our survival ensued. The following is true story of how one boy defeated managed to do what no other races in the galaxy had been able to do. Defeat the Solarians.

Chapter 1

Three days ago the Solarian battle contingent entered the solar system. It consisted of only fifteen ships, but they were more experienced in space battles. In three hours they managed to destroy thirty-three same sized ships and they managed to loose only one of their ships. When they won a decisive victory against the human battle fleet, they started their journey to their destination.

Kore’ba was the Solarian fleet commander and he was happy at the outcome of the battle near the gas giant with rings. As he sat atop his comfortable seat on the bridge, he thought it was a good thing the HighCouncil had assumed the enemy’s strength correctly. Though the probability for loss of one ship was ~ 0.009% according to most of the statistician’s on the home world, but then again they had been wrong before. Kore’ba knew what protocol dictated was to be done next. Orbit the planet and start exterminating the natives. Kore’ba did not like to send down warriors to a hostile planet, when he could just as easily bombard the planet from space.

" ConCond, take the helm! You know what to do next." With this Kore’ba went to his quarters.

Kore’ba needed some sleep, after today’s battle. It was going to take two days to reach the blue blob in space thought Kore’ba before succumbing to exhaustion. He had strange dreams of his ancestors warning him not to send down warriors unless he wants to unleash a force that is as strong as the ancients themselves. When he awoke a few hours later he considered the dream. Many of his species believed in dream warnings by the ancestors as a real thing, but he was not one of them. Kore’ba knew that being the fleet commander he was not allowed to land on the planet surface, less he get caught. So he decided to go and see the pods carrying the soldiers down, drop from the ship. The pods carried on Solarian, and his weapons and food supply for human equivalent of seven and a half days.

The Solarians could be mistaken for a human from a far. They were mostly slightly taller than the standard human of six feet two inches. The major difference between the two races was humans varied slightly in terms of colours, while all the Solarians had light olive skin and at the ridge between the two eyes they had a slight dent. Biologically speaking, some of the Solarian scientists believed that the Human-Solarian hybrid may be superior to both species, but talk of superiority of a hybrid race was totally outrageous to Kore’ba. Though Josh’s father Mr. Devon was only 30 years old, the negotiation to end the fifteen year war took its toll and he died a few days after the peace treaty was signed. He was one of the key diplomats who convinced all sides of the futility of the war. Keran had not remarried, as she was still grieving for her husband. The family was well off now. They owned a substantial piece of land, a reward for helping end the war, and lived in the rural part of the planet. Life was good until the Solarian invasion.

Josh was looking at they sky, when he noticed that several bright stars in space. When they started to get bigger, Josh was terrified. He was only 14 and he could not think of what to do. He was not like other 14-year-olds. He was six feet six and had a toned body from working on the farm. He did not even think of telling his mother to go to the cellar. Josh finally broke out of the daze when he saw and heard one of the pods fly past the house and landed a few kilometres from the farm.

As the pods landed, they exploded and only the cargo that they carried was left unharmed. The pod closest to Josh’s family farm carried one of the better warriors in the Solarian fleet. Her name Roko’Na. She was known to kill enemies with her bare hands, after she lured them in with her good looks. And she was too excited to listen to any of her superiors who were still hours away from her position. She decided instead of regrouping as she was ordered, she would takeout the small shelter she saw when she dropped. She slowly put on her chest armour and picked up the hand held weapon. Then she quickly started to jog towards the farmhouse.

His sister and mother rushed out of the house. Josh and his sister Marty had been the best of friends from the time they were young. Josh loved his mom and his sister, as it was all the family he had and he would kill anyone who threatened either one of them. Josh suddenly realised that what he must do. He ran inside the house, and called the local military police as they had been told to do over the television. Then he rushed out to the vault with his backpack and picked up one heavy-duty and two small phaser rifles. He put all the ammo and the rest of the weapons and medical equipment in his backpack. Josh handed his mother and sister the two small phasers after he loaded them and told them how to load them. He also gave them each an extra round of ammo. His mom and sister were astounded at the speed in which Josh had managed to do all this, but they said nothing of it. Josh told his mom and sister to get the emergency backpacks they had created as per instruction from the military leaflet. Josh did not know how but he knew that the Solarian was coming this way. He told his mother and sister to hurry up. They all got in to the HoverJet and started to head for the nearest town that was still a half a days journey at the high speeds that the Jet was capable of travelling at.

They had just progressed a few meters before a shot to the main jet toppled the vehicle. Josh saw that Roko’Na was crouched down behind a big rock. As he got out of the toppled vehicle he helped his sister and mother out to a big rock. Josh’s weapon was useless from years of neglect by the Devon family. Josh started to look through the backpack for rest of the weapons while his mother and sister were firing what could best be described as peas. The armour was well designed and absorbed the blast from the two ladies. Roko’Na wanted to but could not expose herself to a shot to the head, as that would mean a horrible death. He knew they had only two working weapons as her initial scan had indicated and they were soon going to run out of ammo. Josh was frustrated when he realised that the only two working guns were the ones he had given to his mother and sister. Josh began to hear what his father told him before he died. He also remembered every lesson his father had given him in hand to hand combat.

Josh told his mom and sister to cover him while he went behind the bushes toward Roko’Na. He started to crawl and once he thought he near enough he jumped the Solarian. Roko’Na was surprised, but she recovered quickly but she had lost he weapon already. Josh knew this was his chance to attack her, but before he even finished that thought he was punched hard on his chin and Josh fell. Josh’s mother and sister had used up all the ammo that they had and then they saw the Solarian woman punch Josh. They wanted to help, but Josh told them if they love him, then run. Keran’s motherly instinct was to protect he child and so she was reluctant but Marty realised that her brother was distracting the Solarian so that they could get away. Marty grabbed her mother’s hand firmly and dragged her to the toppled vehicle.

The vehicle was light so it only took them a few seconds to make it upright and in the meantime Josh took the punishment from the Solarian woman. When Josh thought that the vehicle was safely far from the weapons fire, he started to fight. The Solarian woman was really happy. Josh was on the ground, and the Solarian was now holding a metal bar in her hand, ready to swing at any moment. She wanted to scare Josh so she started to talk. And much to Josh’s surprise it was in English.

" You are brave. But you sacrifice would be in vain. After I’m done with you, I’ll go after them. Beg for mercy, and I may decide-" something made her stop, and Josh took the opportunity to attack her.

Josh grabbed the metal bar and yanked it out of her hand and in the process he elbowed her in the stomach where there was no armour. This made the Solarian woman fall to the ground. She was an experienced soldier and was accustomed to pain, but never before had she received so much pain from one blow that came from all people a boy! She was writhing in pain on the ground. Josh could hear that people were coming and not knowing whether or not they were friend of foe he decided it was better he were not there when they got here.

Josh went into the shed and took of in the HoverBoard. The hover board was a lot more manoeuvrable so, it could go on rugged terrain that was not possible on a HoverJet. Speeds possible on a HoverBoard was more than it was possible on a HoverJet as well, within an hour he caught up with his mother and sister and they engaged in an emotional reunion.

When they were within a few hundred meters of the city gates, they were met by a group of military police, led by a girl who could hardly be any older than 16. She quickly figured out that Josh was the one to warn the city of the imminent danger and told them that it was time for her break so she would show them where to go once they were in the city.

The girl did not introduce herself. Josh thought about asking her name, but realised that the subtle hints that he was dropping for her to introduce herself was either lost on her or the girl just liked to be call Ma'am, and so he stopped dropping the hints. Now that he and his family was safe Josh was again acting like any other boy of his age. He was checking out the girl. She was six foot, and had a toned body. Her breasts were not large by any standard but enough to make him horny. But then again when you are 14 anything from a smile to a wave can make you horny. Though the girl did not notice Josh's growing appreciation his mother and sister did and they smiled at each other without Josh realising it. To cover himself off he fiddled around with the shirt he had on, until he was satisfied that no one would suspect he was horny.

Josh, Marty and Keran relaxed in their assigned room. It was actually less than what was bare necessities. The room had just enough space for a double bed and nothing more. Mrs. Devon had been so worried about Josh, just thinking that something could have had happened to him while he was distracting the Solarian woman, made her cry. No matter what he did, or said the scene did not change for the next few hours. Finally around the time they were brought some food, did she stop crying. Not because she was hungry, but Josh realised that she probably ran out of tears.

After dinner, they realised that they had a problem. They bed was a double, and if they all wanted to sleep on it, they would be uncomfortably close to each other. Josh did not let any one think that was an option so he dropped to the floor and took a blanket with him. His mother and sister went to the bed and fell asleep.

Josh's mom and Marty awoke late that night to find the temperature was going down to freezing. Soon they realised that Josh was receiving end of the worst of it, since he was on the floor. Marty, who was closest to Josh quickly jumped out of the bed and checked Josh for a pulse. She was surprised to see that Josh was not cold at all. Infact it looked as if he had a fever. Marty feared for Josh’s life and asked her mother to help him to the bed.

Josh was sleeping like a log, while his mom and sister were trying to cool him down. After about fifteen minutes of cold water bath, Josh’s body temperature returned to normal. Marty and Keran decided to sleep in the same bed, so they could keep an eye on him. As they slept, one woman on either side of Josh, they had to hold on to Josh so that they did not fall off the bed. It was an awkward situation, being so close that they were sleeping in the spoon form.

Unknown to Josh, the medical experiments that his grandfather had done on him for the government were coming into effect. During the fifteen-year war, both sides were desperately developing technology that would enable them to create stronger, faster, more agile and smart soldiers. Their experiment only human subject was the chief scientist’s only grandson JOSH. Everything appeared all right, until he reached the age of ten when he suddenly lost all his special abilities. It was determined that while the human body is easy to manipulate when it is young, when puberty hits the subject looses all the enhancements. So the project was abandoned. Unknown to the researchers Josh’s abilities went hibernating until they were reawakened by the fever.

Chapter 2 – The Emergence

Next day Josh woke up at 3.00 in the afternoon with a lot of noise coming from his stomach as well as outside. Josh did not know why he was on the bed, he assumed in the morning his sister and mother decided that he should have some rest in the bed. Josh asked his sister what was happening.

" What’s happening sis!" asked Josh already knowing the answer.

" We’re under attack. It’s been going on for the last half-hour. The Solarians are inside the city gate…"

As Josh tried to get off the bed, a feeling of nausea came over him, which made him go back to his bed again. Marty stopped helping her brother back down to the bed, when she heard someone open the door from the outside. She grabbed the food knife on from the side table and pointed it at the person who was in standing outside the door. When she saw who it was she was relieved. It was the young girl who escorted them into the city.

" There’s no time. We have to evacuate now. Get the emergency gear. I’ll help your brother," said the enigmatic girl as she approached Josh.

Josh knew that he was still feeling weak, so he welcomed the efforts by the girl. As the group made it’s way through the corridors of the underground shelter they saw other people rushing in the same direction as them, they could hear laser fire and explosions on top of them. Bits and pieces of the ceiling also came loose around them, though none of it was nearly big enough to do any harm to the people moving to find safer shelters.

As they almost ended their journey, they saw the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel but metaphorically and literally. It was a very big room with many large transport vehicles and a large number of military Elite Forces soldiers. The girl dropped Josh into one of the transport and ran off to see her commanding officer.

" Major Tania Neilson reporting for duty. Sir." She said in a loud voice that Josh was able to hear.

" Major, I want you to command beta and delta team and evacuate the civilians to the city of Auria. Is that understood."

" Sir, Yes sir."

" Good bye major. I fear this is the last time we will see each other. I hope we can hold off the Solarians long enough for your exodus. " With that Tania and her commanding officer saluted each other and went their separate ways. The commanding officer called all teams other than beta and delta to help him defend the shelter. This was a suicide mission they knew it, but they did not have any other choices.

The major did as she was told. As soon as all the civilians were inside they headed out of the underground compound. The major got onto one of the other transports that had most of the soldiers in it. On the third night after the exodus Josh was fully healed. He did eat a lot but since food ration was limited, though his mother and sister tried to give him some of theirs as he had just recovered. The daybreak brought news from the scouts that had gone ahead of the exodus fleet that Auria was burnt to the ground.

There is an ancient saying that goes something like this, "When things go wrong, the get worse before they get any better." And it did get worse. The exodus fleet was attacked by a small group of about 15 Solarian fighters. The exodus fleet was taken totally by surprise.

These Solarians were dressed in similar sort of uniform and armour as the one Josh met. The convoy with most of the soldiers was the first one to be taken out. Major Neilson was wounded when the convoy toppled over and spit her out the back. The other convoys stopped behind some bigger rocks, and all the soldiers stepped out and took up position in the bushes, and started to pick off the Solarians one by one.

Josh moved stealthily through the buses and reached the major. He did not have time to do anything other than to pull the major away from the enemy line. When he reached the friendly ground he carried the major to where he heard the medic was. The fighting did not last long, as it was a scouting party that had attacked them though just over half the soldiers from the elite forces were killed, but not one Solarians got away alive.

The army medic confirmed that the Major was undergoing nano-surgery to repair her face and legs. He also mentioned that the young Major was going to have to live with the scars for rest of her life. Since the attack another young officer had become the leader of the army soldiers. He was convinced that they needed to move out as soon as possible, so the convoy now pointed east towards the Fortress Alpha (A military research outpost that was well hidden).

At night, they had to stop to do some repairs on the two remaining vehicles. Josh gave a hand with the repairs since he worked on the family HoverJet himself. He worked with an army mechnic, who every one called Big Joe. After they were done, Big Joe asked him if he wanted a drink with the other soldiers.

" It tastes like horse shit, it can make you blind. But It sure can make you drunk."

" No. Thanks. I don’t drink. You know.. Healthy body Healthy mind crap." Josh turned to leave, but he bumped into someone.

The person who had just bumped into him was going to fall, but Josh quickly grabbed one of the arms and pulled the person toward him to help him/her regain balance. After the split second had passed, Josh’s brain finished processing the information. It was a women or a really chesty guy. It was dark so he could not see the face.

" I’m sorry, Miss"

" Me too." Josh recognised the voice. But before he could say anything, the women turned to leave, so he decided to tag along with the women.

" How are you… Shouldn’t you be in a bed. If I remember correctly, you had quite a day yesterday…"

" That reminds me;" she turned toward him and said with anger and bitterness soacked voice "Thank you for saving my life yesterday. Good bye now."

Josh saw her face for the first time after the skirmish with the Solarians. She was wearing a silver mask of sorts that contoured perfectly along her face giving it a look of artificiality. It was covering her right side of the face. It had a blue glowing window that covered her eyes. Josh guessed, that it was somesort of light enhancing mask. He was right but the girl was using that to hide her scarred face from others.

" Good bye. That’s all you say to the person who risked his life for you…" Josh was angry and he started to walk toward the civilian transports. He stopped when he heard footsteps behind him. He turned to see that the girl was trying quickly to reach him.

" I’m sorry," said the Major " I shouldn’t have had acted that way. It was my fault and I apologize. You asked me if I should be in bed and the answer is, Yes. But I couldn’t just lie down ther. My face is still burning, and I’m hungry now. Do you want to grab a bite, I saw you didn’t eat much in the convoy."

" Lets go to the Civilian tansport. They’re serving food now."

After they grabbed what was given to them, they assumed it was food though it neither tasted, smelled or looked like it was food. As they quitely ate their food, Josh asked her to tell everything about her. The Major replied back, " Only if you go first."

Josh told his life story, and when he finished the Major kept her word and told him all that she told everyone else.

" My name is as you know Tania Neilson. I was born on the third year of the great war. Nothing much interesting about me until I was fourteen, when I joined the the army and after brief but intense training they sent me into war. I was in the war for three days when peace broke out but not before my commanding officer died leaving me to finish off his last mission alone. When I returned I found myself promoted up the ranks quickly," Joshua noticed that the girl was not really happy as she mentioned her successes. " Then when the second in command of my contingent went mad and started to sniper off his fellow soldiers, I killed him to save myself and the other that the general made me the Major." Tania paused for a few moments before continuing. " It’s your average military women’s life. Ok, I have to go now. Thank you for the company."

Josh sat there and finished his meal before returning to the transport where he slept through the night and into mid afternoon.

When he awoke he found himself in a bed! It took him a few seconds to guess that he was inside the military research facility. The room was devoid of things other than a sonic shower, and three sets of bunk beds which were actually part of the wall. The walls were coloured blue in keeping with the military style, but they also had sivery glowing lines running through them. He could not work out what they were but they seemed a lot more concentated at the door and the sonic shower area. He guessed they were power up and went to the door.

As soon as he reached the door it opened automatically, revealing something that made him step back. It was Tania. She was wearing a tarquiz dress top and black skirts. Her shoulder length hair was tied back in a pony tail. She was still wearing the mask to hide her scars. But aside from that she looked beautiful.

" Wow. You look… I mean, Why are you not in uniform?"

" It’s my first day off in a year and I’ve decided to hold a self defence class for the women and you are going to help me."

" What if I don’t wanna be the punching bag"

" You don’t have a choice. You either co-operate or the military guards will throw you out of the facility."

" Well I better co-operate then."

" I knew you’d see it my way."

Joshua found out that he was asleep when they reached the facility, so they carried him inside. Josh’s mother and sister were taken to separate
