Chapter 1: Chasing the Rabbit

note: my story, my ideas, my characters. Just ta let ya know. Don’t steal anything cuz it’s mine. Take anything and live with the prospect of facing a horrible death. j/k anywho enjoy! I’ll only warn ya once at the beginning but this applies to EVERYTHING!

There was a full moon and the night seemed quieter than usual. She sat at the desk quietly, her pencil in her mouth, concentrating on her English essay with much difficulty. She looked at the almost blank sheet of paper before her. She unconsciously began to doodle on the paper while trying to think about what to write. “Damn it! That stupid teacher, essays are bad enough, but writing them out? I hate essays and that old hag said we had to write everything out in cursive writing too! Typing is so much easier! That stupid old fashioned teacher! Why can’t she let us type it?” she thought to herself. She looked towards her computer and sighed in disgust. This would take a while.

She looked down at her paper again and blinked. There were little doodles everywhere. She sighed and thought out loud,” It would have been easier if the assignment was to draw a manga.” Her mind soon began to wander off once more into the realm of dragons, princesses, magic and war. She fell asleep quickly at her desk with her lights on.

A knock on her door came once, then twice, and with the third, the door knob twisted open to reveal a middle aged woman. “Kaori?” said the woman. She looked at the sleeping girl and shook her head. “This girl.” She thought while walking over to the desk to turn off the lamp. Before she left, she wrapped a blanket around the sleeping girl.

About two hours later Kaori woke up and looked at the clock. It read 9:51 p.m. She groaned, hit herself in the head and said,” Now I’m definitely going to have to stay up late. Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!” Turning on the lamp, she remembered that she needed a new sheet of paper because she had drawn all over this one. She looked at her paper again and was about to recycle it when she noticed some neat writing scrawled in the bottom right corner. “Eh?” she thought with curiosity. She looked at the word and decided to test it out. “E-nel-es.” She smiled. It had a nice ring to it. She folded the paper up, tucked in her pajama pocket for future reference and pulled out a new sheet of binder paper.

Kaori started writing and very soon she had her introduction. She put down her pencil and said,” Geez, this is so boring.” She opened one of her drawers and pulled out a knapsack containing her art supplies, notebooks, a digital camera, sketchpads and a huge white binder. She opened up a thick black notebook and it was black. She frowned.

She put it back and pulled out another thinner notebook. It was all filled up with neat, minuscule writing and occasionally, pictures. Kaori flipped through a couple of pages at the beginning, skimmed through some notes, and put it back in the bag. She pulled out the binder and it was filled with many character designs, sketches and plans for manga she planned to write. She flipped towards the end where her earliest character designs lay. She looked at them with fondness but also with distaste.

Pulling out a new sheet of blank white paper, Kaori began to redraw them quickly with more skill. She grinned happily at her sketch results. She signed and dated them both rather sloppily, and then put them in empty clear sleeves near the front of the binder. She pulled out another sheet and started thinking about what she should draw. She loved the feeling of a finished sketch. She began to draw, not knowing what she wanted…and then she heard the sound of flute playing. “A flute?” she thought,” Sasa plays the flute.”

The music was enticing. It was as if the flute was beckoning to Kaori. She became mesmerized by it. Slowly she got up, trance like, and promptly snapped out of her daze when her knapsack had dropped. The music had faded away by now. She bent down and picked it up. She shook her head and thought,” Am I hearing things?”

The music had started again and by now Kaori was pretty sure that it wasn’t something she made up. The music was so amazing. Kaori felt more alive listening to it. She looked out her window and saw a huge shadow fly by, the music fading away with it. “What was that?” she thought, “Were those wings?” She felt very scared at that moment, and was going to pass it off as a hallucination from a lack of sleep and excessive stress, but something stopped her. Curious about the wings, Kaori decided that she couldn’t let this chance pass by her. She rushed downstairs, her camera in her pocket and hurriedly pulled on her sneakers. She quietly closed the door to her house and proceeded to run in the direction the figure had flown in.

She couldn’t see it and was about to go home when she saw “it” again. She got excited and started running again, this time pulling her camera out so she could take a picture of “it” without haste if she needed to. It was cold outside but she didn’t feel it. The only thing on her mind right now was the winged creature. She was determined to get a picture of it so she could sketch it later.

“Damn.” She cursed many minutes afterwards,” Lost it.” She laughed at herself bitterly and said,” I’m like Alice, chasing after a rabbit but I lost it before I even had a chance to fall down the hole into wonderland.” By now, she was a couple blocks away from home. She wiped the sweat off of her forehead with her arm. Suddenly she became quite aware of her surroundings. She was out late at night in a dark street. There was no one around. What if some crazy guy jumped out of nowhere and tried to kill her? She began to think how stupid it was to run out here looking for an imaginary creature she wasn’t even sure she saw. She then reprimanded herself for hind sighting. She looked around nervously for anyone, anyone at all. Fear had made her senses more acute and she heard someone behind her. Scared, she prayed to God silently and thought of Sasa.

“Looking for me?” A male voice said. Kaori gasped and whirled around. “You…” She said. A tall thin, winged boy dressed all in black stood before her. His messy black hair fell over his eyes, showing only one red eye. She felt a bit of shock. He was beautiful. He smiled, scaring Kaori. She hadn’t expected the winged creature to be a winged boy. She expected his reaction even less. He said,” I’m not a rabbit, you know. I’m a boy, even if I do have wings. I have to say that my feelings were quite hurt when I was called a rabbit. I’m not such a weak, pathetic disgusting creature.”

His red eye began to glow. She opened her mouth to scream for help but no sound came out of her mouth. She panicked. Grinning, he said,” I’ve got you.” Her eyes widened and she backed away. He edged closer to her and said,” Now Alice, didn’t you want to go to wonderland?” Kaori definitely did not like his words. A black hole was forming in the ground. She tried to run but he grabbed her arm with a firm but gentle grip that did not loosen even as she tried to wrench free of him.

Kaori suddenly used her other arm and grabbed him, bit his ear and he cried out in pain. His grip on her arm, however, did not loosen. He held his bleeding ear with his other hand carefully. “You…” He said. He glared at her. Kaori cringed. She remembered the camera in her hand. She thought,” Maybe I could…” She didn’t finish the thought and her hand went up. She took a picture of him, the flash of the camera blinding him. “Hey!” he said, trying to shield his eyes,” you stupid little brat.” Freed from his grip, Kaori quickly dashed away.

Kaori ran back to her house and slipped quietly into her room, her heart racing. So many thoughts raced through her mind. “What just happened? Why couldn’t I scream? Who was he?” She willfully pushed these thoughts into the back of her. She didn’t want to think about it right now. She wanted to wait until she was in a calmer and more composed state.

Kaori still had her sneakers on but she didn’t care. She was completely exhausted. She wasn’t really the athletic type but she could escape quickly when she needed to. She closed the window curtains and locked her bedroom door. Plopping down on her bed Kaori closed her eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep after the night’s hectic events. Floating outside her house, the boy grinned and said,” Who’s the rabbit now Alice?”
