"Okay, now for my story." Kay started. "Well first of all, I can't really tell you /who/ sent me. it's all a matter of faith. so anyway. when I went to "heaven". of course. I'm just using it as an example, we could do different things that we wanted to do. There was this one part where you could get trained to help people around. You know, like give them happy dreams, bring them inspiration, bring them happy thoughts, and cheer them up. I guess you could call us almost "angels", but that's putting it in overstatement. We can't change things physically, but we can help mentally and emotionally. Like I went over to you on Halloween night, remember Darren?"
Darren smiled.
"I have always been there, Darren. I went down mostly to see you and help you." She smiled at him too and then continued on. "Of course, I took different kinds of courses while I was up there. Like self defense, marksmanship, and fencing. I was kind of pissed off because I let Vlad beat me like that. and I wanted to make sure it would never happen again. So, while I was there, I met this girl, Allegra, who was a few years older than me and died on the same day I did. When I saw her first, she seemed to be nice, but when we actually met and went through a bit of training, she became the nastiest girl I have ever met. Plus what ever she did, she wanted to be better than me, so we were rivals. She hated me for some reason. and we had barely even known each other. So, I went off doing the cheering up, good dreams, inspiration, and I helped a lot while she watched me in disgust, and sometimes I wonder how she got up there.." Kay shrugged. "One day, she disappeared. We found out later, she had been tempted by these witches. She gave in to them, and soon she became the leader. We saw later that she had been going around the world, possessing people. The situation could not be handled mentally or emotionally this time. It had to be physically. So, some of us had to go down their as humans. alive." She paused. "Well, I was the best one who knew Allegra, plus her next target was Live Demood Falls. They sent me down here to help get them out."
"So . you're actually. alive now?" Zack asked.
"Yeah, one hundred percent mortal. I can die in any way; I can get hurt, and everything. No special powers for me. They let me take on the age I would have been if I was still alive as well."
"But there has to be some kind of. well. price to pay almost, right? You can't just take life again without-" Lisa started.
"Hey Lisa, take it for granted! She's alive again! No price to pay!" Darren exclaimed. Kay looked away though as they were all talking and Darren spotted this immediately. He could only stare and shake his head. "No . . . no . . . Kay . . . "
"I can only stay here for this mission." She began as she stared away. "Only for the mission. After that . . . I have to go back." She touched a gold necklace that was around her neck and fingered the red jewel that was on it. It was quite strange, because it seemed as if there was mist inside of it and it was glowing. "See this jewel? Well, this is my life inside of it. You know the gem on Allegra's belt? That's hers. When we're fully alive, it's invisible so nothing can happen to it. When we're dead, the jewel belongs to Palace of Life. The "guy" up there is in charge of it. We live in eternity there. But . . . I'm dead . . .and I'm back . . . it's a sign that I am in charge of it, but I was dead. If the jewel breaks, then my life is out of existence. It would have never existed and I'd be wandering around without a soul. They'll take the gem back when the mission is over . . . and then . . . I'll have to go back."
"Damn . . . dammit!" Darren yelled and got up, slamming his fists against the wall and gritted his teeth. He closed his eyes.
"DARREN!" Lisa yelled as she got up and went to where he was. She grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him close. "Darren, listen to me." She lowered her voice so the other couldn't hear her. "We're all upset she can't stay with us. We were all upset when she died. You're not the only one with the loss, but don't mope around and make her feel bad as well. Cherish the time that she's here anyway. Live as if you had one day, but love her as if you had eternity."
"It just. isn't fair. There has to be another way. . . there has to be . . ."
"Well, until you find that other way, stick with my plan and stop acting like an idiot."
All of a sudden, the main door of the basement came flying at Kay. Kay put her two palms in front of her and pushed away to the side, shattering it. She stood up immediately motioning everyone to stand up as well. Kay reached into the compartment on her belt and pulled out a handful of salt she threw it at the doorway, making a figure there stop.
"Always prepared, aren't you Kay?" Snickered a voice and a figure stopped at the doorway. They didn't have to see her to guess who it was: It was Allegra.
"Nothing's wrong with a little preparation and organization, Allegra." Kay retorted as she stared right into Allegra's eyes. "I was always better at it than you anyway."
Anger flashed in Allegra's eyes. "Dangerous risk you're taking, Aklenksy, staring right into my eyes. Who knows what kind of powers I could use to hypnotize you."
"You wouldn't dare, you sick coward." She spoke calmly. "You wouldn't dare try to hurt me, you're afraid of what I could do to you."
Even more anger and fury flashed in Allegra's eyes now, as both began to glare, each face impossible to tell who's held more hatred. Allegra was angry with fury as Kay remained calm, defiant as ever.
"Well," Allegra began. "Maybe my target isn't you. Maybe it's something else that you value more than your own life." She slowly pulled out something from her hair. It looked like a golden barrette or something.
Except barrettes aren't that sharp.
And you don't throw barrettes.
Allegra chugged the "barrette" faster than a bullet, and it aimed right for Darren. He saw it, but barely, and he knew that it would be too late if he tried to move.
However, the "barrette" never got that far. Darren glimpsed the gold barrette in Kay's left hand and saw it leave her hand as well. The next thing he knew, he saw the barrette hit the door post where Allegra's head had been less than an inch away from it. Darren and everyone else saw it clearly now: it was a knife.
"Allegra, let that be a lesson to you to STAY AWAY FROM US and STAY AWAY FROM MY FAMILY AND THIS HOUSE!" Kay yelled, as Darren had never seen her yell like that before.
Allegra's eyes widened. "Oh, your /family/ lives here? I didn't know that." "Well now you know damn well now and if you ever take one step here, then know that I will kick your ass all the way to where you belong in hell!" Kay shouted. "You won't get anywhere near my family as long you and I remain on this Earth!"
Allegra let out a scowl. "This "battle" is won, but not the war, be aware of that, Aklenksy. Know that I'll win this time, and I'll show the whole world that I am the better of the us!!!!" She grabbed a broomstick that was lying on the stairs behind her and flew away.
Darren, Zack, and Lisa just stared at her. They had never seen her yell or curse like that ever. Finally, Zack let out a "wow, where did you learn to catch a knife like that?"
"Well, you know," Kay shrugged. "When I was dead. We can't stay here anymore, it's too dangerous. Salt can protect us from witch magic but not from a blade from a knife. We're sitting ducks. Let's pack up some stuff and get out of here. We can go to the Live Demood Woods, you know, where the old falls use to be."
"Yeah," Darren looked uneasy. "The falls."
"Good, we should get going right away." Kay explained. "Let's pack up now." Kay grabbed a backpack from the back of the room that looked very similar to Kay's old one. She went to another room of the basement and they followed her there. She was looking through pantries for the foods that didn't rot or get eaten. She stuffed some granola bars into the bag and some other foods and went somewhere else. She took out this small black box and stuffed it into it. She took some small blankets that would fit into her backpack. She then put some bags of garlic in the front pocket. They saw that she already had some stuff in the front pocket. Then, she grabbed a flashlight that was on the counter.
"Wow, we helped a lot." Zack said sarcastically.
Kay laughed a little. "Don't worry, I'm kind of used to doing everything myself anyway. We'll tale the secret entrance out."
They followed her out of the tree and she then sealed the entrance. Kay, Darren, Zack, and Lisa all remembered that Halloween five years ago. They had to admit, the street looked pretty much the same, except without all the creatures. The humans instead were killing their own kind. They quickly crossed the street, trying to avoid the possessed people who were running around like maniacs. They had to get to a park first and go through the woods there.
They took a less used way to the park, running the whole time. They couldn't risk getting caught. As they ran through the gates of the park, Allegra spotted them. She grinned evilly and became invisible. She began to follow them from a distance.
Kay was first, leading them all, like the other Halloween, Darren was second, with Lisa third, Zack fourth, and Holly last. The way though very long, was very familiar.
"Remember that, Lisa?" Zack pointed to a tree. "You said that looked like a lamp post."
Lisa smiled and nodded. "Yeah I remember, and then there were those beautiful violet flowers. They're over here!" She pointed to the ground.
Kay smiled as well and looked to Darren. Darren looked into her eyes. "I wish we could have had more happier memories here. It's so beautiful." He spoke softly.
"And here," Lisa exclaimed as they walked on, but then her tone and voice changed. "Was . . . the . . . place . . . Darren . . ."
An image replaced Kay's reality as she remembered how the werewolf had tackled Darren, ripping the skin from his neck, tearing it open. She remembered how the blood came flowing out, and how frail and weak Darren was after the attack. She remembered everything.
She shook it off. She had to be concerned with what was happening now, she told herself. She had a mission now.
"We're near . . ." Kay stammered. "We're very near."
And then Darren caught sight of the falls. The falls they had stopped from running. Instead of water, there were plants growing on the bottom, but on the top where the rock barrier had been placed, nothing grew. It was just dead.
And then memories flooded back to Darren.
/"Darren, if you don't stop what you're doing, I'll kill Kay." Vlad held a knife up to her chest.
Darren almost dropped the rock but Kay shouted, "Don't worry about me, just do it! Do it now before it's too late! Do it for me, it's my only desire."
Darren stopped. He looked at Zack, Lisa, Kay, and Vlad. He put the rock on the blockage. Vlad began to stab Kay deeply, but he disappeared when her blood began to fall. Lela disappeared too. Kay weakly fell to the ground. Darren ran to her side.
"Look!" Lisa pointed. "Your fangs are gone! You don't have a mark on your neck!"
Kay smiled but Darren's eyes were full of tears. "Aw, come on, Darren. Stop crying. I'm fine, I really am." Kay assured him.
"You're hurt though, because of me-" Darren started but stopped when Kay kissed him./
Kay squeezed his hand. "Come, on, we've got preparations to take care of for camp."
Darren blinked a few times and he nodded, looking at the falls again. He saw the rock that he had ended Kay's life. It was glowing this time, but it was still there.
Kay began to make a huge circle with salt. It was large enough for all of them to sleep there and even have a lot of space for walking. Kay took something else out of the bag and so Darren took the garlic out of the bag so he could help.
Kay was holding a long silver chain. She looked at Darren. "I don't trust werewolves." She spoke softly.
He looked at her gently and handled the garlic. "I don't trust vampires."
Holly watched them as they made a circle together. She watched with envy as she saw how Darren looked at her and how Kay talked to him. "Maybe," she thought, "I'll annoy Kay tonight . . ."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
In the middle of the night, as everybody slept, Holly stayed awake. She went over to a part of the circle and just swept the salt away and threw the garlic away.
She didn't know that Allegra was watching.
Allegra shape shifted herself so she was very tiny. She watched Holly go back to sleep. She turned herself back to normal size and woke up Darren. "Darren . . . why don't you move some of that salt so we can get out of here." She snickered softly. "Or poor Kay will have to die twice."
Darren glared at her but she stood up. Allegra cackled a witch kind of a laugh for fun. She didn't see Darren rip part of his shirt and throw it near Kay. He swept away some of the salt so they could both cross. She laughed again, as she grabbed him and they flew away on her broom.
