A Cat Walks the Wires
Copyright 2002 R.D. Ellison
Up above the house-tops,
People safe under protective roofs,
Tiptoes a cat, stealthy and black
Swaggering over the fools.
I hold my breath as kitty calm
Walks the dark ropes of false light
Totally dependant upon a man-made tangle
She's so far up - now will she fall?
Will the electric wires get her once and for all?
But patience and balance she'll never lack
Or so it seems to us mortals unable
How does she succeed,
Step after step,
Never losing composure and cool?
How can we imitate her,
Juggling our days,
In worry, evaporating our nights?
'Gainst the grey and yellow sky
Silhouette of the prodigy
The feat of cat as like every cat
But I never realized until now -
I am dead scared silly
Of heights.
