Sticks and Stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me. This was a saying that Katie had heard several times, but she knew well enough that it was a lie. Words hurts alot, especially if you have to hear them day after day. Ever since 1st grade Katie Madison was called fat, and not just "fat" but "huge", "fatty-patty" and other words that stung her feelings more then a bee coming in contact with human skin. But Katie was fat and even in the 8th grade, she has still dealt with the horrible words that haunt her. She made no effort to change her looks for she swore to herself at a young age that she would not change her looks to please anyone. She would be the way she wanted to be and she wanted to be fat.
Katie lay upon her baby blue blanket and stared at the ceiling of her room. She wasn't staring at anything in particular, just the texture and color of the wall itself. In reality, her mind wandered several thoughts, invading the wonders of mankind. Most of all, she wondered why people didn't accept her for who she is. So what if she couldn't see her feet when she looked directly down at a standing position? So what if she wasn't prancing around in belly-shirt? She sighed and a tear rolled down her face. Just then, her mom came in. She quickly wiped away the single tear that was shed and sat up. Her mom stood in the doorway of her room, holding the cordless phone.
"It's for you." She said and sat it down on Katie's desk, only inches away from her door. Katie grunted as she lifted herself from the bed and walked to pick up the phone.
"Hello?" She asked and sat down on the chair. At first she heard only breathing then a loud laughter exploded from the other line. "Who is this?" She demanded. Laughter was the reply. Soon the phone was silent on both ends, Katie confused and the anonymous caller giggling without a sound.
"Hey Bucket-Of-Lard, you stole my sandwich, didn't u? Fat ass!" An unfamiliar voice shouted into the speaker and hung up. Katie pushed the OFF button and threw the phone on her bed with rage. Tears flushed her face and she could feel herself become more angry by the second. Without thought she picked up the gun that was hidden in her drawer, meant for protection, and raised it to her head. Just then, her little sister, Anna, came in. Although she was only 11, she knew the meaning of suicide.
"No Katie!" She cried and ran toward Katie. Her little arms streched around her waist and she squeezed a tight hug. Katie lowered the gun, but said nothing. She could hear Anna wailing, though the sound was muffled by Katie's sweatpants. Katie stood there, gun in her hand, wondering what to do. She had always closely considered suicide and even attempted it once with pills. She had angry with her mom for throwing out all of her personal items that she grabbed a bottle of sleeping pills and chugged the whole thing down before going to bed. All that occured was mainly vomitting, no death.
Now she had her little sister here, interfering with her plans. She pushed Anna away gently and Anna looked in Katie's eyes with concern, her face red from crying. Katie sat down on her bed, never laying the gun, her future, down beside her. She sighed and Anna looked at her. "You're not going to do it, are you?" She asked. Katie shrugged, undecided. She looked seriously at Anna who narrowed her eyes after meeting up with Katie's look.
"Anna, sweetheart, I've been going through alot of tough times and this is my only way out. Please let me live a better life in heaven, please." Katie begged, instantly feeling the power of God come over her. Anna sighed.
"Why?" She asked and sat beside Katie on her bed.
"Because I want to end this hell, I'm tired of people picking on me, it's ruining my life. I can't even enjoy a Saturday evening without someone calling me fat." Katie explained, tears still dripping from her damp cheeks. Anna shook her head.
"No way am I letting you do this. I'm gonna tell mom." She said and jumped up. Before she got anywhere, Katie grabbed her arm. "Ow!" Anna shrieked. Katie loosened her grip a bit to avoid any problems.
"You say a word to mom before I pull the trigger and I'll do it right in front of you." Katie threatened and regretted it soon after. Anna sighed.
"Whatever." She said and raced out of her room in a pace that shocked Katie. She then dropped the gun and ran to the door. She cracked it just a bit and listened for voices. There was none and when she peered out, she could see Anna's room shut. The pain of leaving her family to mourn for her was great and although this was selfish, she knew it was her last chance. She picked up the silver calibur and pulled the trigger. Her hell was over...
