Hey. I got another idea for a story. Hope you like it!
My sister was 4 years older than me. She was a senior in high school and I was in 8th grade. My sister’s name was Angela and I hated her so much. Why did I hate her you ask? Well, she was perfect. She was so pretty. Angela did everything. I’m not kidding. She sang, played piano, did cheerleading, was president of her school. You name it she did it. Me, on the other hand, I wasn’t popular, I wasn’t pretty, and I didn’t participate in anything. I never played sports and I wasn’t super smart like Angela. I didn’t even have friends. It was so obvious my parents loved her more than me. I had to compete with her all my life. Finally at 13 I gave up and stopped trying to gain my parents’ affection. You don’t believe me? It’s true. They never noticed me unless I did something wrong. They never listened to me. They were never around when I needed them. Never around when I needed someone to talk to, to help me. I decided to kill myself. You think I was overreacting? Take a look at the last 2 days of my life. Then we’ll see if I was overreacting.
Serenity sat up in her bed and hit her alarm clock. She got up and walked downstairs. No one was around.
“I wonder where everyone went.”
She walked to the kitchen and found a note on the table:
Serenity,
Sorry to leave so early, but Angela’s car is getting painted and we had to drive her to school. I’m sure you won’t mind walking to school. Have fun.
Mom, Dad and Angela
Serenity sighed and made some breakfast. She got dressed and walked to school. All day she sat alone because no one ever liked her. Serenity was eating lunch when she remembered something that happened in 3rd grade.
FLASHBACK
It was the day before Valentine’s day. Serenity was so happy because she was going to make the prettiest valentine cards. Maybe then the kids would like her. She ran home and started right away. Serenity spent hours making the cards, writing everyone’s name in glitter and coloring them. She was so proud of her cards. She ran downstairs to show her parents, but they were busy with Angela. She was practicing for her recital tomorrow. Serenity went back upstairs and put them in a pretty bag. She went to sleep, dreaming of all the cards she’d get and the friends she’d make. She woke up and got dressed. She made sure she had all the cards and went downstairs. Her mother drove her to school. While she was walking down the hallway some kids started making fun of her. Serenity paid no attention to them, she just thought of all the cards and all the friends. She walked to the classroom and put the cards in everyone’s mailbox. At the end of the day she went over to her mailbox and opened it. There was only one card in it. She opened it. The card was from her teacher. The bell rang and all the kids left. Serenity got her backpack and saw her cards, the ones she worked so hard on, thrown on the floor. She ran out of the room crying.
END
Serenity realized she had started crying. She took her napkin and dried her tears. The bell rang and she went to her next class. The teacher handed back the test. Serenity prayed she did well. The teacher placed the test on her desk.
‘Uh oh. She didn’t say good or anything. I’m afraid to look.’
Serenity looked down and saw she’d gotten a 63.
‘Fuck! I studied so hard for this! I just won’t tell my parents.’
Then the teacher said the worst thing a student could hear.
“Ok. Have your parents sign them and show them to me tomorrow.”
‘Shit! Someone up there doesn’t like me.'
‘Probably had to work late.’
She started walking home and it began to rain.
“This day can’t get any worse.”
Serenity opened the door.
“Anyone home?”
She took of her wet shoes and walked into the kitchen. She saw a note on the table:
Had to find Angela a dress for the prom. I’m sure one of you’re friends drove you home.
Mom
‘Friends? What friends?’
Serenity watched TV and waited for her mom to come home. Finally the door opened and her mom and Angela walked in.
“Serenity come see my dress.”
Serenity walked over and saw Angela holding the prettiest dress she’d ever seen.
“Isn’t it pretty?”
“Huh? Yeah it’s nice. Oh mom I need you to sign this test.”
“What did you get?”
Serenity handed her mom the test.
“A 63!”
“I studied really hard! I swear!”
“I refuse to sign such a pitiful paper.”
“But mom you have to!”
“And you have to start doing better!”
“But I tried my best!”
“Angela never failed anything. Why can’t you be like her? She was perfect in algebra. Maybe she can help you.”
“I don’t need her fucking help!”
“Serenity!”
“Fuck off!”
“Go to your room right now!”
“Fine!”
Serenity ran up the stairs. She was so mad.
“Stupid fucking bitch. She’s perfect in everything!”
She punched her pillow and knocked things over.
“I need to fucking calm down.”
“Serenity we’re going out to dinner. I’d invite you along but I think you need to study algebra and your manners!”
Once she heard the door close, Serenity walked out of her room into the bathroom. She picked up a razor.
“Why can’t you be like Angela.”
She slit her wrist.
“She was perfect.”
She slit her wrist again.
“Maybe she can help you.”
She slit her wrist a 3rd time. Serenity watched her anger trickle down her arm and drip onto the floor. She put the razor back and cleaned up the blood. She looked in the mirror.
“Don’t worry Serenity. Tomorrow’s you birthday. I’m sure they’re buying your present now that’s why you couldn’t go.”
Serenity smiled to herself and went back into her room. She fell asleep.
BUZZ!
Serenity opened one eye expecting someone to be in her room. She saw no one. Opening the other eye and sitting up, she listened to what was going on downstairs.
“Honey did you write the note?”
“Oh no I forgot. I’ll just write one real quick.”
“Ok. Let’s go.”
The door slammed shut and Serenity climbed out of bed. She walked downstairs to the kitchen. She walked over to the note:
Angela has cheerleading tryouts, so she had to get to school early.
Mom, Dad and Angela
“No ‘happy birthday’? Maybe they forgot.”
No she wouldn’t believe that.
“Dad did say he forgot to write the note, so maybe he didn’t have time to write it or maybe they’re planning a surprise party.”
Serenity got her stuff and left for school. No one there said happy birthday to her either. Not even her teachers said happy birthday.
“Hmm…mom’s not here again.”
She walked home. When she got inside she was expecting people to jump out and yell ‘surprise!’ but that didn’t happen. She walked around the house and went into the kitchen. She found a note on the table:
Sorry we couldn’t pick you up. Angela’s singing in a concert right after school. Oh yeah she made cheerleading. We just had to stop by to put something in the freezer.
Mom and Dad
“Freezer? What goes in the freezer? Ice cream cake!”
Serenity ran over to the freezer. She opened the door and saw a box.
“They didn’t forget!”
She took the take out and looked at it.
“They did forget.”
The cake said ‘Congrats on making cheerleading’. Serenity started crying.
“How could they forget?”
She went over to her mom’s calendar.
“It doesn’t even say my birthday on here.”
She ran to the computer and checked the date book.
“All it says is Angela’s concert. I can’t believe they forgot.”
Serenity ran upstairs to her room and cried on her bed.
“How? How could they forget? Why didn’t they write it down? This must be a dream.”
She pinched herself.
“Ow. If I run away they won’t care. They probably won’t notice, but if they do they’ll find me. Where can I go so I can never come back?”
Serenity sat and thought for awhile. Then the idea hit her.
“If I die, they can’t get me back! They won’t care if I die anyway. They’ll turn my room into a trophy room for Angela’s stuff.”
She walked downstairs and got a knife.
“Maybe I should write a note. They always write me one.”
Serenity got out paper and began to write. She walked upstairs and put the note on her desk. She picked up the knife and cut a vein.
“Serenity?”
They all looked around.
“Serenity!”
Her parents went to check the basement and outside. Angela went upstairs and walked into Serenity’s room. She screamed.
“Oh my god!”
She knelt beside Serenity.
“Serenity! Wake up! Please be alive!”
Angela shook Serenity.
“Please…”
She began to cry. She saw a piece of paper on the desk.
“What’s this?”
Angela started reading the note:
Dear Mom, Dad and Angela,
By the time you read this, I’ll be long gone. Why did I do this? Maybe you’ve noticed, then again, you never noticed me so why bother writing that. You’ve always neglected me. All your attention was focused on the ‘perfect’ Angela. Yes Angela you are perfect. You are pretty, popular, athletic, smart, everything! I’m none of those. I’m ugly, stupid, have no friends. I’ve always tried to compete with you, but I’ve given up. Congratulations you won; you’re the perfect child. Everyone loves you, notices you. Everyone wants to be like you. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I started cutting myself, not too deep. I just needed to calm down. I wasn’t planning on killing myself until you all forgot my birthday. That’s right it was today! You didn’t even write it down! I thought maybe that it was a joke, hoping that maybe you planned a surprise party. No…I got home from school and saw the note that said something about the concert, how you made cheerleading and how mom and dad stopped to put something in the freezer. I thought what goes in a freezer. Then it hit me, ice cream cake. Sure there was a cake in there, but it was for ‘Miss Perfect’. It was a cake for you making cheerleading… not a cake for my birthday. That’s when I cracked. I couldn’t believe you forgot my birthday. I decided I needed to get away. If I ran away you’d find me, so I needed something more than that. I decided to kill myself. You can’t get me back now. It’s too late. 14 years of living alone…14 years of no one caring. I know no one loves me. I wasn’t even going to write this note, but you always wrote me one.
Goodbye forever
Serenity
Angela was crying so much. Almost everything was true.
“Mom! Dad!”
Serenity’s parents ran upstairs and read the note:
Dear Mom, Dad and Angela…
