He had seen movies involving the death of a loved one before. Typically the one left behind screamed out his pain and rage into the night, releasing his anguish to follow the soul of the departed.

Recrin was not granted the ability to seek such a release.

"What's happened?!"

"Her heart's stopped!"

Yes. That's it. Her heart's stopped. Nothing he could do. Nobody killed here. There was no vengeance to be had.

Tatia began CPR. Silverwolf prepared himself to send a blast of electricity into her body to restart her heart if necessary. Barbwyr created a protective barrier around their makeshift medical workstation. Marks set up his secondary weapon, prepared to fire upon anyone who approached in a threatening manner.

He wanted to help. He knew he should assist Marks in protecting the area, he knew he should be doing something.

Recrin couldn't move.

"CLEAR!"

He felt the crackle of energy ripple across his skin, lifting the hair on his arms and head.

She was dead. There was nothing he could do.

"CLEAR!"

Silverwolf sent another jolt into her body. It jerked into the air slightly, like a lifeless rag doll being tossed by a child.

*She's dead.

*She's dead and I can't feel anything.*

"Wait! I'm getting a pulse!"

*Pulse?*

"It's getting stronger! She's back!"

*But... She was dead. Back? How can she be back? She's gone. *

"Turn her on her side, she'll probably vomit when she comes to."

*She's alive?*

Recrin could feel his own heart pounding in his chest; ringing in his ears. Everything seemed to move in slow motion.

Liral's eyes opened.

She gasped for breath, eyes wide, frightened, and unseeing.

But she was alive.

*Alive!*
