Star Formula Stage 01

The sound of fast cars was the only thing being heard aside from the applause on the bleachers on that hot summer day. Brushing a few strains of darkred hair out of her face, Mizuki leaned against the wall in front of the control areas. A whitered sportscar appeared in the distance and drove past with high speed. Mizuki followed the car with her darkblue eyes and watched it disappear in the distance once again before turning around and typing something into her portable minilaptop. She sat down on the curb and watched the screen as a graph appeared. A light smile appeared on her face.

“The new system works perfectly.”

Mizuki looked up and gave a victorysign to one of the mechanics at the control area. Taking off his baseballcap, Satoshi jumped down from his place at the control and went over to Mizuki who was pointing at the graph. He roamed through his short black hair and leaned over her shoulder.

“Wonderful. I was a bit sceptical after the problem during the warm-up.”

“Iee. We all knew it would work. It’s perfect for Asanuma’s driving style.”

Both looked up as a group of mechanics streamed out of the pit in front of them and took their positions for the next pitstop. Satoshi blinked against the sun and looked down on his watch.

“Looks like AirRacer are the first ones for the stop once again.”

Mizuki clapped her laptop shut and saw how a blue sportscar drove to its pitstop. The fast moves and the precision of the mechanics were fascinating for her. She adored them for their speed which meant a lot for the race itself. A single wrong move could cost one of the drivers his victory or even the title. The car drove off and Satoshi took a look at his stopwatch.

“7.4 seconds. Not bad.”

“They’re our greatest rival as of now.”

Avoiding to comment on this, Satoshi turned his look over to the control area of their team. CyberStar. He had to smile as he saw the brand of their team. Mizuki had chosen the name when her father, Hikama-sama, was about to enter the first grandprix with his team. She was only a little kid back then but already greatly interested in cars and everything that had to with them. And she had been at every grandprix since the past 15 years, first as the daughter of Hikama-sama, later as the computer technician. Despite the fact that Mizuki was just 18 years old and just finished the high school with great honors, she has gained a known title among the teams of the Star Formula. And she had a very special friendship with the new star of the team, Asanuma Lee. Satoshi didn’t knew how special this friendship would get in the future but he wished both of his dear friends to be happy. Even if that meant to forget about his own feelings. Another car drove to its pitstop, this time it was the one of Asanuma. Both, Satoshi and Mizuki, watched the stop with pounding hearts and were happy as everything went well. They jumped up as the car disappeared and leaned over the wall, curious to see if Asanuma could keep his first position.

“The time was 7.2. It should work. And ....”

“It does work!”

Mizuki jumped up and down and embraced Satoshi who was so surprised that he nearly hit the wall of the control area. Softly, he pulled Mizuki’s arms from his neck and walked back to the control area, placing down the stopwatch. Hikama-sama smiled down at him and took off his earphones.

“Everything alright?”

“Hai!”

In that moment, one of the other technicians gasped as he watched the monitor in front of him. He teared down his earphones and turned around to the others, screaming.

“Hikama-sama! Akira had an accident!”

“What?!”

Hikama-sama and his daughter looked up in shock. Akira was the second driver in their team and a very good one as well. He hardly had accidents but when he had they were quite serious. Mizuki jumped onto the control area and scanned the screens until she saw the one which showed Akira’s car. It had crashed against a wall and didn’t look like the elite sportscar it was just a few moments before. To make it worse, Mizuki couldn’t spot Akira anywhere so he still had to be in the car. In that moment, the scenery was shown on the monitors in the near of the bleachers and the crowd grew silent all of a sudden. Mizuki stepped back and didn’t notice how her father, Satoshi and some others were doing what had to be done in such a situation.

“Oh my, Akira-kun ....”
