Lonely

It's usually feelings that get you through life. Sometimes feelings aren't always the best thing. For everyone, feelings can be hurt, yet they can also be healed with love and laughter. Although one person has had his love life shattered repeatedly by so many people, he bothers to not listen to feelings no matter if they're his own or someone else's...

It's around 9:30pm as he stands atop a roof in his black jacket that hangs down to his ankles. He stands there waiting, for some sign of him not being the only one, everyday. He never smiles nor frowns, he keeps the same plain face evade, he never speaks or even moves unless totally necessary. His name is Josh...a young man about the age of 15 to 16. He slowly walks to the edge of the roof as his steel-toed shoes drag from him not bothering to pick up his feet very high. He glances around as his brown eyes survey the area closely and a slight breeze goes by flowing through his black hair parted in the middle and the bangs down to his cheeks.

He turns around unsatisfied but not making any type of emotional difference as he walks to his spot he picked out on the roof to sleep at. He lays down right in the middle of the roof putting his arm up and cradling his head in his hands while he closes his eyes and slowly drifts to sleep.

Josh wakes up opening his eyes slowly then sitting up as he looks around noticing he's in the exact same spot he was in last night. He pushes himself off the hard surface and stands in front of a brick chimney then leans back until his back hits the flat yet rough surface of it. He crosses his arms slightly below his chest and lowers his head while closing his eyes.

Meanwhile, a young girl by the name of Michelle is walking home from school. Her long red hair waves in through the air as light breezes go by and her red tank top gives off a bright wondering color to the streets. She glances around never have gone down this street before but ignores it and holds her books tightly while her sneakers lightly travel through.

She glances from roof top to roof top then sighs not knowing where she's going until an object catches the corner of her eye atop a roof. A young man stands solemnly against a chimney not moving an inch. She stops and turns her body towards the building, setting her books down next to her she says in her lovely voice, "Hello!? Is anyone up there?" and waits for a reply.

The young man stays as still as ever and doesn't bother to budge from his spot. Michelle asks her question again but still, no reply. She sighs and squints her eyes to at least catch a glimpse of what his face looks like and jumps as he lifts his head up and opens his eyes looking down at her. She blinks and begins to ask again but notices his eyes, they say nothing to anyone, no love, no hate, no anger, not even normality. She holds her hands close to her chest and takes a step back as the man says nothing but just stares at Michelle.

Frightened, she grabs her books and starts to run as a few tears roll down the sides of her cheeks then she stops suddenly. She wipes her tears away with her arm then looks back and notices the young man standing in the same spot and not looking at her anymore. She holds her chest trying to catch some breath from being frightened and running.

She slowly walks back to where she saw his eyes and clears her throat hoping she'll get a response from him this time. "Hello? What's your name?" she asks. No reply from the stranger as he stands motionless and stares blankly at her. She takes a deep breath and looks at the front door to the building.

Michelle slowly walks towards the door and looks into the dirt covered windows, as she sees nothing inside but a bunch of dust, dirt, and a stairway leading up. She opens the door with a creaking sound as her sneakers slowly creak along the floor towards the stairway. She holds on to the wooden railing as she begins to climb up and watches each step as sure not to step on the cracked or bent steps.

She eventually finds her way to a metal door in the ceiling where the stairs end. She puts her free hand up on it and slowly pushes it open as some dust falls to the floor then fully opens the door as it makes a loud thud hitting the roof. She jumps and sighs in relief then climbs out and onto the roof where she now looks for the young man.

The young man, Josh, is still where he has been as Michelle slowly nears him cautiously looking around. She swallows her breath and taps him lightly on the shoulder. No response. She blinks and taps him again. Still nothing. She begins to get a little worried and steps in front of the young man now being in his line of view.

He still stares blankly in the same spot and bothers not to move. Michelle puts her hand lightly on his neck to check a pulse and raises a worried eyebrow feeling a pulse but seeing no response from the guy. She figures to try and lure him to her to at least get something from him and lightly runs her hand through his hair but still gets no response. She groans slightly getting annoyed and puts her hands on her waist thinking of what to do next.

He quickly turns his head towards Michelle suddenly as she gasps and jumps back from the sudden movement. He keeps the same expression on his face as he looks at her still showing no emotions. She sighs and decides to try some other time as she goes back down through the building and exiting out the doors as she makes her way home now.

Michelle lays in her bed wearing an oversized t-shirt and short shorts as she curls up into ball under her covers thinking of what to do to try and get the young man to respond to. She slowly drifts to sleep from thinking too hard.

Meanwhile at that very moment, Josh stays in the same spot he was when Michelle came and tried to get him to respond, he un-crosses his arms and walks over to the middle of the roof and lies down as he slowly closes his eyes like every night. He puts his arms behind his head again and waits till tomorrow.

A new day is born and Michelle is ready for school but something keeps bugging her, that young man on the roof. She doesn't know why he acts so strange. Her mother calls and she quick rushes out and starts to run towards school. She slows her pace down as she comes across the same street yesterday and begins looking up at all the roofs hoping to find the young man.

With no such luck she runs inside the building she went into last time and drops her books as she quickly runs up the stairs skipping a few dangerous ones and making it to the metal door. She slowly opens it with a creak and lays it softly on the roof's floor knowing about last time. Slowly she walks past a few chimneys then looks to the middle of the roof and sees the young man still sleeping on the floor.

She slowly walks over to him and kneels down as she looks at face seeing nothing's changed and also wonders how such a boy could be so well groomed from staying atop just a roof. She gently strokes the side of his face her tender hand and smiles sweetly then stands up and heads towards the door.

The young girl, Michelle, looks back one more time to see if he's OK and smiles to herself as she exits the roof and heads out the building.

A few moments later, Josh, opens his eyes slowly and stands up as he walks to the edge of the building and leans over looking down at Michelle who has just left the building and heads for her school. He keeps the same expression as usual and looks off in the distance as he sees someone in a window with binoculars and looking straight at him. He still shows no signs of emotions or getting worried and slowly walks back to his spot where he sleeps.

After school, Michelle and some friends started home. Michelle wanted to show them the young man on the roof since none of them believed her so they followed. They came onto the street and started looking at all the roofs closely. It wasn't long until Michelle saw two police cars in front of the building she was at earlier today.

Quickly, Michelle ran towards the cars as three cops came into view and her friends followed slowly. She looked at the roof then back to the cops as she asked, "What are you doing here?" kind of frightened they're here for the boy.

"We're here for a young man on that roof up there," he points to the one Michelle had been worried about and she quickly shook the arm of the cop, "Why!?" she said almost about to cry. "He has had no permission or permit to live up there," the cop said as he stared at the roof.

At that moment the young man appears leaning on the edge of the roof looking down at the cops. The head officer quickly signals for the other to go after him but they refuse so they give him a ten-minute time limit to get out of the building. He stays in that same spot for the past six minutes then reaches into his jacket with his right hand to pull out a handkerchief but just before he does the cops think he has a weapon so they quickly draw their pistols and aim up at the kid.

"Drop it!" the officer yells as he aims his gun towards the boy. "STOP IT!" Michelle screams as she reaches to pull down the officer's gun but is too late. A loud shot is heard and the young man's left shoulder is jerked back quickly as blood spews out from the other side landing on the roof top but the boy still stands and moves his should back to where it was while his warm blood flows down his arm. The cops open their mouths in awe as they look at the kid.

The young man quickly reaches into the lower part of his jacket where he didn't reach and pulls out a Desert Eagle aimed straight towards the cops. The cop's reaction time is too slow as the boy opens fire with one bullet each second until he shoots out the knees off all the cops.

Michelle quickly runs into the building, tears rolling down her face, and climbs to the roof immediately. She finds the young man in the same spot and a small blood trail behind him from the bullet wound. She slowly walks over to him and gently tugs at his un-harmed arm. "Please," she says almost about to cry, "let me heal you...,"and wipes some of her tears away.

The young man looks over at the girl and keeps his emotionless face but she knows she now has his trust and quickly takes him to the middle of the roof as she sets him down and kneels down beside him as she takes off his jacket on his left arm and observing the wound closely.

He stares blankly off to where he was standing and ignoring everything around him while Michelle heals his wound and puts his jacket back on him. He puts his gun away and sits where the young girl put him. Michelle stays next to him and waits till night falls as her friends run back home.

*****

Night has fell and the young man stays in his same spot while Michelle leans on his wounded shoulder gently. She looks up at him and smiles some. He leans back and puts his hands behind his hand again like every night as Michelle lays down next to him and lays her head gently on his shoulder still then she slowly falls to sleep.

He looks down at Michelle and stares at her for a while admiring her beauty in the night light then puts his left arm around her and looks up towards the sky as he slowly drifts to sleep.

A loud sound awakens Michelle and she finds herself alone on the roof. She quickly glances around trying to find the young man and catches just a glimpse of him hiding behind the edge of the roof on the west side, crouched to his knees and holding his pistol to the ground as he keeps staring off to the third building from there.

Michelle quickly starts to walk over to him but stops as she realizes that sound that woke her up was a gunshot and she jumps the brick chimney. Slowly she looks out from behind it to see what the young man's staring at. She realizes in an instant it's a sniper atop the other building.

"Why!?" she thought as she tried to keep an eye on the boy. Quickly, her senses hit her and she remembers the cops yesterday that he shot down but didn't kill. He let them live even though they shot him through the arm and now there's a sniper waiting for him to reveal his position to him and pick him off.

The girl thought of what to do, if she revealed herself most likely the sniper would take her down also since he would think she's in with the boy. If she didn't then eventually the young man would die. She sniffs some trying to decide on what to do with a life depending on it either way.

Michelle swallows her pride and runs out from behind the chimney and heads straight for the boy hoping to reach him in time. The boy looks back at her with emotionless face as the sniper redirects his aim for her and slowly pulls down on the trigger.

A loud shot is heard and Michelle closes her eyes as tears run down her face thinking this it for her. The young man drops his pistol and jumps up in front of the girl as the bullet pierces through his back and blood slowly pours out from the wound. She opens her eyes to see the Josh taking the bullet for her and now in the open as well.

The sniper quickly reloads and aims towards the kid's back as he fires again. Josh grabs Michelle and hugs onto her as he takes another bullet and protecting her from harm. The sniper reloads yet again and fires repeatedly.

Soon enough the sniper stops and waits. Josh slowly lets go of Michelle and winces as he looks down to his chest, seeing two blood spots where the bullets have made it through him but not to Michelle. "No...," Michelle said in almost a whisper. "Why did you have to do that?" she asks as tears run down her face. The young man just stares at her and weakly smiles. He slowly opens his mouth and says in a gentle voice, "Because...I love you...," and with his last breath he falls to the ground on his knees as Michelle screams and gently holds his head up in her lap while his body lays motionless among the floor.

She strokes her hand along the side of his face as she cries even more and hugs the body tightly then lets go. The sniper sees his job is done but wonders about the girl and shrugs as he leaves his position. Dark clouds slowly form over the small town and rain falls like it never has before. Michelle still sits with Josh's body in her arms as she looks down to his face and whispers quietly to herself, "I love you too...," as she holds onto the body and cries...
