That's What Friends Are For

My best friend and I have a special bond

We can each tell what the other is thinking without saying a word

But we do talk, and we talk a lot

About everything and nothing

We first met in kindergarten

And proclaimed ourselves "best friends forever" in third grade

From then to middle school, we called each other on the phone

Almost every single day

We were great for each other

She comforted me when I cried

I gave her a shoulder to lean on

We gave each other everlasting friendship

And good advice on everything the other would want

The summer before seventh grade, she moved away

Her dad got a great job offer

So we were sad, but we knew

We would still be "best friends forever"

Her new life was tough

Being the new kid in school

I could tell when she wanted me to call

Was having trouble with school, friends, or was just depressed

She could tell too

So one of us called and said

"I knew you wanted me to call. What's the matter?"

The other would be amazed and say

"I was just thinking about you."

So we still know when we are needed

We talk on the phone maybe once a week

See each other maybe once a month

It's hard to get together

But we still are close as ever

Comfort each other when we are down

Laugh until our stomachs ache

And just have fun

We are always there for each other

That's what friends are for
