"Heavenly intoxication
Love's been marred by medication
Ain't it funny how a life can take a turn
When the end is near"
-Goo Goo Dolls
Jessica was at a party with her friend Chelsea. Only her friend was completely drunk. Rob, an old friend from school stood nearby listening when Chelsea suggested that they leave and Jessica attempted to keep her from behind the wheel. "Chelsea," Jessica said bluntly. "You're too drunk to drive home."
"Fine," Chelsea said. "You can find your own way home. I'm leaving." She walked away.
"Chelsea!" Jessica called. "Wait!" Her friend was soon out of site. She crossed her arms narrowing her green eyes. "Typical."
"Jess," Rob said calmly. She turned to him.
"This sucks," she said annoyed. Rob laughed softly.
"May I drive you home?" he asked. "I was about to take off."
"Well my ride just abandoned me at a party I didn't want to be at so sure," Jessica said. She followed him outside.
"I parked my car back here," Rob said nodding to an alley. Jessica followed him slowly. She was ready to flee. "Sleep." He just said that one word and she lost consciousness falling to the hard concrete below. She woke up feeling chains on her arms. She tried to pull them loose. "Don't, you'll hurt yourself."
"What's going on?" she asked her voice tiny.
"You'll see soon enough," with that Rob took her chains leading her into a house and down a hallway. He took her into a large room. A few people turned studying her.
"Did you bring a snack?" one man asked.
"I brought a trade," Rob corrected as he approached a man who looked to be in his early twenties. His long black hair hung in his dark blue eyes. "A life for a life. Give me Kathy."
"Why are you asking me for this?" the man inquired although his gaze never left Jessica.
"Because I know you're in charge here," Rob said.
Another man brought a woman forward. "She's mine not his," the man growled. "And I see no reason to trade."
Rob showed his first sign of emotion as he looked at the first man pleading. "Please."
The man looked at Rob a few seconds. "You can find another Brent," the man sighed. "Let Kathy go." Brent started to object but didn't due to the look the first man shot him. Brent released the woman who rushed into Rob's arms. "Take the girl to my quarters."
She was drug away and then into a bedroom. Her chains were unsnapped but re-snapped before she could do anything. Jessica was now chained to the bed. The chains were long enough to allow her to sit up but nothing else. The men left her alone in the room. After what seemed like a lifetime the man came into the room. "If I unlock your chains will you run?" he inquired.
"Probably," Jessica admitted.
"Duly noted," he said calmly. "Well I suppose it doesn't matter. Even if you run someone will catch you." He leaned over her undoing her chains and throwing them on the floor. He then tilted her head up studying her.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Seeing if you've been tasted," he smiled. "You haven't."
"Tasted?" she whispered. "What are you talking about?"
"Let me show you." He gently pushed her back and knelt in between her legs. He leaned over her neck and could feel her pulse racing when his lips touched her neck. "Relax, little one." He slowly bit down. She understood instantly. He was a vampire, and now she was going to die. But then he pulled away licking the blood off her neck. She stared up at him in shock.
"Why didn't you kill me?"
"Because I have no desire to. I was just hungry."
"But you're a vampire."
"Yes, but that doesn't mean anything. I'm not evil sweetheart. If I were you'd be dead now and what I did would have hurt." He smiled sensually. "Did it hurt?" He knew perfectly well that the feeling was definitely not unpleasant. She shook her head slowly. "Thought so. What's your name?"
"Why should I tell you?" She knew deep down that this could cause him to kill her but he just laughed.
"Because I asked."
"Jessica," she said hesitantly.
"See that wasn't too hard," he said.
"Why am I here?"
"Because I wanted you. That's enough of a reason."
"But that other girl-"
"Brent kidnapped her, technically what I did was illegal. Trading another vampires, um, possession for you."
"Possession," she said flatly.
"Yes," the man looked perfectly serious.
"That's very cavemen," Jessica said coolly.
"You have several choices," the guy said. "You can remain human and stay here under my control. I can turn you, which would give you a lot more freedom. The third is death."
"Do I have to decide right now?"
He smiled. "Of course not. You can decide anytime in the next week." Week? she thought.
"Okay," she said out loud. "Um, what's your name?"
"I will tell you in time." He stood up taking her arm and leading her down the hall. "Since you'll be here a while I should show you around." He led her all over his place. "I share this place with my sister Alaza. It's a sort of sanctuary. A lot of people came here hiding from Akull."
"Akull and Alaza?" Jessica asked.
"I know the name's seem odd to you but from where I came from, including the time Jessica was unheard of."
"What is yours?" she asked again. A beautiful woman who looked a lot like the man next to her approached before he could answer.
"Kaine!" the woman said happily.
"Kaine?" Jessica asked looking up at the man.
"Actually it's Mikaine," he said. "This is Alaza."
"Mikaine," Jessica said carefully pronouncing the name. "Okay, all the other names are normal."
"Alaza this is Jessica," Mikaine said ignoring her words. Alaza stuck out her hand. Jessica shook it.
"A new pet Kaine?" she asked looking at her brother with slight distaste.
"Pet?" Jessica asked annoyed.
"Any new arrivals?" Mikaine asked.
"No and don't try to change the subject," Alaza said. "Well I'll go so you can finish touring the castle."
"Castle?" she asked.
"Of course, how do you think that we have so many people here?"
"But still, you live in a castle."
"Yeah, I've had it since the 1500's."
"Since when?"
"Darling I am a lot older than you can guess. I am one of the first."
"First?" she asked.
"First vampires," he explained. "Alaza, several others, and myself did a spell making ourselves into this. We had no clue what the spell would do but I'm happy like this."
She looked up at him curiously. "How old were you?" she asked.
He paused thinking. "Twenty-two I believe."
"You don't remember?"
"Ah, that was a long time ago." He led her through the rest of the castle.
