The Huntress

The temples loom above me; my children play below.

I softly leave them in this spot, the place that we call home.

I walk slowly away, the jungle at my paws.

I wade across the river I weave between the trees,

Looking for a meal for my cubs and me.

I walk into the field and cautiously look around.

Nothing sees or hears me; I flatten to the ground

I stalk silently through the tall grass, and I come upon a single deer.

I close in upon my victim. It raises a head, wiggles and ear.

I leap into the air and come down with a thud.

The deer screams and thrashes around.

My strong jaws grip his throat; I ease him to the ground.

Soon I feel no beating in his hollow veins.

I drag him back to my family and we are fed again.
