Chapter 1: The Beginning
Why doesn't anything happen to me? This world feels so empty. Everything's so normal. I wish something exciting would happen to me.

"Suriin! Psst! Suriin, wake up!" Nina hissed. Suriin, who was sleeping face down on the table, jumped up with a start, flailing her arms about. Suddenly, her hands hit something solid.
"What what!! What happened?? What did I hit?" Suelynn looked up to find her fist an inch away from a very angry teacher. She let out a high pitched scream and covered her mouth. Great! Of all teachers to hit, the History geek!
The whole class broke out in giggles.
"Miss Suriin, I hope you would pay more attention in class and stop falling asleep! I won't hesitate to report you." Mr Rahim towered over Suriin, his thick black glasses temporarily blinding Suriin.
"Ah! Er, yes sir. Sorry sir." Suriin bowed apologetically and hurriedly opened her History book.
"Now be quiet, class. Lets continue." Mr Rahim said, glaring around. The whole class immediately looked back down at their History books, trying their best to stifle their laughter.
"Cold War was started between the US and Russia for........" He drolled on and on.
Suriin stared down at the endless words, trying to keep awake. Her head kept nodding off. History sucks. Rahim sucks. Everything sucks.
"Psst. Su, you really were amazing. " Nina whispered from beside her.
"Yeah? Thanks..... when is this class going to end?" Suriin groaned softly, looking out of the corner of her eye at her best friend.
Finally...... Briiiiing!
"Thank you, sir."
The class stood up in respect as the teacher gathered his books and walked out of the classroom. As the teacher disappeared down the stairs, the whole class erupted in cheers.
"Su, bravo!"
"Su, that was great!"
"Suriin, how could you fall asleep!! He could've--"
"Yeah, did you see Rahim's face when Su punched him in the stomach? It was priceless!"
And yada yada yada. "Thanks guys, but it wasn't on purpose."
Suriin grinned guiltily at her classmates who were crowding around her. She glanced at her watch. "YIKES! SCHOOL'S OVER ALREADY! EXCUSE ME PEOPLE, I'VE GOT A BUS TO CATCH! EXCUUUSE ME!!
After Suriin finally disentangled herself from the crowd, she ran all the way down from her school blocks to catch her school bus. God, hope its not too late.
As she reached the school gates, she spotted her bus moving away in the distance.
"WAiiiit!!" Suriin groaned. I've got no choice.
She started running after the bus. Three minutes later she reached the nearby school where the bus had stopped, waiting for more students. Gasping wildly, she climbed up and collapsed in the nearest seat.
"What a bad day! Uncle, you should've waited for me!"
"I no know you take bus anot today. How to wait?" The bus driver answered in Chinese accented English impatiently.
"Forget it." Suriin slumped down in her seat. Thank goodness I caught it anyway. Whew! What a run! I knew I needed exercise after last night's chocolates, but this wasn't really necessary....
She moved around in her seat, trying to find a comfortable position.I just need a little rest.... zzzzzz....
"Hoi! Hoi! You! Wake up!"
Suriin jumped up with a start and found two very angry eyes staring at her.
"Aah, uncle!"
"Get down lah! You don't want go home, issit?!"
"Oh... I'm sorry." Suriin stepped down just as the bus screeched away, causing her to nearly fall over.
What bad manners. How could you possible fall asleep, Suriin, she chastised herself as she opened her house gate to let her dog out. She checked the mailbox and retrieved the mail. I hope nothing more goes wrong.
"Hmm, mom's banking statement, booklet, MKA newsletter, dad's letter, I guess that's all..... WAIT!" She dropped all the school books and letters that she was holding except one. She held the thin envelope, trembling.
"This is.... I hope this is what I think it is. Oh, please be it!" She tore open the envelope carefully, and took out some pieces of paper inside. She read the shortest one first.
Dear Ms. Suriin,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been chosen as the grand prize winner for the 'Join 2 Win' competition we held two months back. As you know, the grand prize offered is a two-week Voice-acting job for our company, Tokyo Media Broadcasting. Inserted together are all the information you need about Tokyo, your accommodations, .......
Oh...my god. Suelynn gasped in delight. She waved the paper around hysterically.
"I totally forgot I'd joined this contest!!! Oh! Finally something is happening!"
She picked up her poor dog who looked very bewildered at the way she was acting, and twirled it around happily. Finally, to the dog's relief, she set it down and continued scanning the paper. “Ah! Here’s a good one, Pixie.”:
As part of the prize offered, we have provided a two-way ticket to Japan for you. If in any case, we decide to keep you longer than what we expect, a free return ticket will be provided. Accommodations that we will provide is a three-room apartment situated in the Uragawa district. It consists of one bedroom-cum-living room, one kitchen and one bathroom. The apartment is situated in one of the two blocks that we provide for our staff, and it's very close to the nearby station. It takes only 15 minutes to reach central Tokyo by train, and another 10 minutes to reach our building. We......
“Did you get that, Pixie? An apartment all of my own! Cool! “ Suriin jumped up and down in delight. She refolded the papers carefully, stuck them inside the envelope and rushed inside to tell the good news to her friends.
“Su, are you really going to Japan this weekend?” A group of girls, headed by Ann, asked wide-eyed.
“Yep, true-blue!” Suriin winked at them. “I couldn’t believe it myself.”
“But Su, we know you have been learning Japanese all this while, but is it enough? You’re going there for two whole weeks you know!” Another classmate beside her commented.
“Yeah, will you be fine there alone? There’s no one familiar there with you.”
“I....” Suriin started, feeling her good mood evaporating.
“Su will do just fine. Her Japanese is really good now, so don’t dampen her spirits, guys. “ Nina butted in. Instead, she turned to her best friend. “Su, remember to bring back some souvenirs, okay?”
As the rest all started talking about the merits of Japan, Su shot a grateful look at Nina. Nina smiled back and lifted a thumbs up. Have fun, she mouthed.

Nov 21, 1.30 a.m.
Dear Diary,
Oh. My. God. Tomorrow’s the day I’m leaving boring old Malaysia for two whole weeks. Two whole weeks! Doing what I want to do most: Voice acting. Yeah, I might miss mum, and dad, and Pixie, and Nina, but this is a one-in-a-lifetime thing. I can't just let it blow away, right? Thank goodness I'm bringing you with me, Diary! At least, that's one less thing to feel homesick about!

“Su, did you remember to pack your toiletry essentials? What about your personal hygiene stuff? And check your bags again to make sure you didn’t forget anything!” Mom called out.
“Don’t forget to check for your IC (Identity Card) too. And all the documents you need to bring to show them. Did you stick the identifying stickers on your luggage yet?” Dad added rushing in and out, for no particular reason, just to look busy.
“Yes I did, Mom. I checked everything the way you told me to for THREE whole times already.” Suriin groaned. Sure this was exciting, but it seemed like her parents were getting more excited over this than her. And she was the one who was actually going there!
Suriin glanced at the clock on the wall.“Mom, Dad, there’s only two hours left before my flight, and you take an hour to reach the airport. Can we set off now?” she yelled.
They rushed around, panicking and packing last minute stuff everywhere before finally managing to squeeze everything in the car and setting off for KL International Airport.
“This is the last call for flight TO6574. All passengers, please board the flight immediately. I repeat.....”
“Mom, Dad, everyone, guess I’d better be going now.” Suriin managed to gasp out amid all the hugging her relatives had been giving out for free since half an hour ago. She adjusted her sling bag, picked up her two suitcases, hugged them a last good bye, and walked to the departure entrance.
“Goodbye, my girl! Take care!” Mom cried, waving madly.
“Remember to show your passport and speak clearly!” An aunty cried.
“Don’t act suspiciously or you might be suspended!”
“Remember to take your sherbets when your ears begin to pop!”
“I added Panadol just in case!”
“Goodbye, goodbye everyone!” Suriin turned and waved for the last time before disappearing inside.
Aah finally, Suriin thought as she handed her passport to the customs officer.
“This way please.”
She followed the officer. I’m finally setting off. Japan, Land of Rising Opportunities, here I come !
