Topic: To all writers...and critics
My story Midnight Calls needs someone to review it and let me know how far it is from being good enough to publish. I like constructive critism, and that was my whole purpose of making an account here.

I have 23 chapters written, but only 9 are up, but I wouldn't mind the critism now since I think its better to recieve it early in the story rather than let the story go on and then find something wrong with it.

Thanks

It's a little late for me to be commenting but I just came across this forum. I understand the desire to be published--having the same feeling myself.

Still, I thought I would share some things I've learned.

If you post anything online you have handicapped yourself.

When you go to a publishing house they are going to buy serial rights. If you publish online you will have to tell them and will have to sell them second serial rights rather than first. This can cause trouble because why would they want to buy a story that anyone can read online? It goes with the rule that putting something online /is/ publishing it. Also, there's always a chance that someone will steal the storyline.

It doesn't mean that you can't post stories up for review and critique but I would recommend that you reserve your hard-worked stories for another medium. There are writing groups all over that place that can help and you won't have such a high risk of stealing.

This isn't to discourage your efforts I just thought I would share some information. I read "Everything To Know About Publishing" to learn about the entire system. I'd recommend it if you're seriously interested in becoming a published author. It's very useful.

Because writers write. We'll do what we want.

And if you were to get published, you'd remove the story as soon as talks began. I doubt there's some freak out there stalking SLASH and Vamp fiction for sake of finding the next Harry Potter to sell around bootlegging or leaking information. If anything that kind of dedicated spoiler stuff would only raise buzz to your work. And in any case, I've submitted to agencies and publishers before, the only reason they ask about previous publications is so that there isn't a conflict of interest with other rival or former publishers- or to gain some sort of insight on your professionalism.

Reading isn't the same as living it, I'm sure this book you have is useful, but writers ultimately write for one reason: to get noticed and to tell their story. If money is your sole reason for putting your pen to paper, then go to hollywood. This is a different ballgame.

I appreciate your comments, but money isn't what i'm after. I love to write novels, not scripts, and have done so for years. So being slightly harsh on that subject was a little uncalled for.

I know what has to be done to submit anything to a publisher. Thats not what I asked for. But your right about taking it off this site the moment I thought of getting it published.

But really I don't where the money idea came from, since I never mentioned or even hinted at it.

Actually If I'm not mistaken, if someone takes your idea and publishes it...that is still plagrism....You can sue them and take them to court because you'll have the proof not only on this website that you posted it before they did....But if you saved files on your computer you would have the date it was created and if it was created before the other person's vala!
