Topic: Sub-races
Chimera/dæmons

Chimeras are animals or humans that have been ætherally and/or genetically spliced, modified, or mixed with other human or animal body parts. A chimera has no specified form and can range from mostly human to mostly animal in any size. They can also range from only two combined species to an indefinite amount. Chimeras have no sense of self, and are usually feral, submitting to the more animalistic side of themselves mentally. Chimeras do have the ability to use æther naturally without a focus, though it has been undetermined whether it is from their ætherally enhanced bodies or pieces of alkahest that was implanted into them during the transformation process. The life expectancy of chimeras is unstable, ranging from only a few months to the longest recorded age of 256 years old.

Dæmons are chimeras that have gained sentience and are capable of rational thought thanks to the stabilizing of their different genetics. Dæmons are usually born as such and it is rare that chimeras ever turn into dæmons throughout their entire lives. Dæmons are naturally capable of using æther due to both their chimera blood and years of evolution. Dæmons have been known to revert to their feral nature due to either stressful situations or the phases of their cycles. Currently most of the dæmons live in the secluded village of Aerich. Dæmons usually only belong to one type of chimera race, as mixing the bloodlines too much leads to degeneration down at the genetic level. Dæmons normally have a life expectancy of 40 years. There are currently six known types of Dæmons – lupis, felis, epopis, piscis, lacerta, and vulpes.

- Lupis – a dog type, well known for their strength and loyal nature

- Felis – a cat type, well known for their dexterity and tenacious nature

- Epopis – a bird type, well known for their ability to fly and carefree nature

- Piscis – a fish type, well known for their amphibiousness and dual nature

- Vulpes – a fox type, well known for their intelligence and mischievous nature

- Lacerta – a reptile type, well known for their tough defense and violent nature

Nimaus

Nimaus are enhanced humans, a mix between organic and technology. They are created from reanimated human corpses that have been supplanted with synthetic skeletons and an æther power source. They are neither living nor dead but somewhere in between; however they are also not mindless like corpses that have simply been through an electrical current. They do have thoughts, but these thoughts are never their own, as the long period of brain death they go though before becoming nimaus destroys any knowledge they may have previously had. Instead, they usually have said knowledge (whether it is various skills or tactics) implanted into their brain during reanimation. In this way, they are more like æther cyborgs than anything else. Also, a nimaus has no set personality and they normally create one by imprinting off of those that they are bound to.

The abilities of a nimaus are indefinite. Basic abilities include regeneration of mild to extreme wounds thanks to the æther that animates them, a basic usage of æther, and weapons that have been implanted into their bodies. Further abilities have been such as being able to meld with different technologies and incorporate them into their bodies.

Zashura

Zashura are beings made completely out of æther. It is unknown as to when these beings came into existence or even how. However, it has been determined (or closely speculated), that Rætech himself was a Zashura, and that he created the human race by taking pieces of himself and splicing them with organic matter. Zashura can be found wherever large amounts of æther reside, and their appearance anywhere usually foretells of any major æther flow shift. Zashura have amazing abilities with æther considering that their bodies are made of it. However, because a zashura is not a natural being, its body is highly unstable and thus has a chance of self-destructing. The more a zashura exhausts itself, the better chance it has of weakening its molecular structure and losing parts of its body. The parts will regenerate, but until then the zashura must rest or else risk further instability. Zashura are the only beings that naturally know the ancient language of Nexian, though it is not known why.

First off, are all these sub-races PCs? Because, while I definitely see some neat possibilities with them, I also see the likelihood of god-awful Sue characters. Particularly of the daemon type (despite their rarity).

Might want to keep a tight hold on how many players you let be a daemon or nimaus. Although, I would like to voice my own interest in maybe playing a nimaus character.

Yes, for now Chimeras (well, Daemons actually) and Nimaus are PC capable. Zashura are way too close to being godlike for now, and also because of their nature, no real "human" could ever understand what the hell they're thinking. Daemons are becoming less rare at this point in time. With more and more Chimeras "evolving" into Daemons, they are becoming more and more common place. To put it roughly, it's been about 300 years since the Pansad Incident and about 280 years since Chimeras started to evolve into Daemons.

And while they can be close to Mary/Gary Sues, I put enough "secret" limits on them to make sure that if they go too far, they'll get completely screwed over. For instance, Daemons/Chimeras have a cycle. Depending on what part of the cycle they're on, they are more prone to revert to a feral mindset and even stay in that mindset. So if something were to...trigger them, it might be necessary for the rest of the party to put them down or else risk everyone else's safety.

Play a Nimaus if you want. Just tell me about any questions you're having.

K, new sub-race. Enjoy...

Dryad

Dryads are plants that have been ætherally altered to gain sentience. They come in two forms – either just the basic plant, or a mostly humanoid form with a few plant-like characteristics. The first Dryad, Yggdrasil, was a tree that had a multitude of Alkahest implanted inside as well as a constant current of æther run through it. It gained sentience and became the “parent” plant for all other Dryads. Dryads cannot use æther, but they do not need to, as their control over the environment seems to be a type of sorcery all of its own. It is limited to controlling non-Dryad plant life, water, and minerals in the ground. In essence, they could be considered masters of earth and water aether.

Dryads are born in two fashions. Either the plant-type Dryad spreads its seeds much like any other plant would, creating new plant-type Dryads, or they give birth to humanoid Dryads from themselves. However, only tree Dryads can actually give birth, as they are the only ones big enough to bear a humanoid Dryad, and they can only give birth to a humanoid one once every decade. Humanoid Dryads mature rather quickly, growing from their infantile form to an adult form in a matter of a few years. However, upon reaching adult form, they cease to age for the rest of their lives. Dryads live as long as their “parent” plant would.
