Mercurial WeatherTopic: Vampires vs. Werewolves Are these two supers unnatural foes? That seems to be the case on films, from the old black and white classics to the latest. And to me it doesn't sound so farfetched since Vampires are all ego: cold, rational, efficient, immortal killers with little emotion to provide counterbalance. While the werewolves are all id, quick reflexes, giving in to impulses and the beast within...So is there a chance for this two sides of the coin to reach a middle ground or a they going to go at each others throats the moment they cross paths? |

Arzu SanazIt would be rather interesting to see a friendly (but it would obviously be strained) relationship between two such species. However, most writers tend to favor only one side, or choose not to include the other species. If they are included, it's almost always on a "Good & Evil" basis. Or, war basis if anything. I think it would make an interesting challenege to see other writers come up with a piece about a relationship between two creatures of the different species. It doesn't have to be romantic of course. Any "Middle Ground" relationship would take time, unless both parties were friendly beforehand. Wouldn't be too halloweenish though, would it? Or Supernaturalish either. Just pure Drama and storytelling. But then again, you could twist in a few events to make it truly supernatural. |

LadyBugLuckI tend to favor vampires over werewolves ^^'I could see a "middle ground" being they just exist together...i dont think they'd like each other very much, but they allow each other to continue living...for what reasons i dont know...maybe to keep the humans in check. Just a bit of rambling for you all :) |

Mercurial WeatherActually I posted this 'cause I've been thinking of doing a story about it, I've been talking to someone that favors the furry and is no secret I like the fangs, so I thought why not, but the answer came almost immediately, no way to suspend disbelief there. The notion of the enmity runs so deep in the collective unconscious that you just won't be able to go pass that. Oh I've tried to figure out a way to bypass that, the closest I came was having them both locked in some sort of high tech government facility and having to make an uncomfortable alliance to escape it. Extreme situations make for strange bedfellows. I must be mad because, even if that wasn't what I had in mind, the mention of a romantic relationship made me wonder if I could take it there without ending with a substandard Romeo & Juliet wannabe tale? |

Late MarchVampires and Werewolves are black and white, I agree. And I do think that a relationship could develop given time. It would probably be a slightly cynical, very on the edge relationship. I would say that it would be the Werewolf baiting the Vampire and the Vampire just tossing about occasional references or sentences that they know will drive the Werewolf mad. A romantic relationship would, of course take much longer than a purely platonic one. Has there never been a movie were Vampires and Werewolves are just good friends and not on one side or another? I've seen one or two fanfictions were there is an all powerful child that is half Vampire and half Werewolf, but that seems a little odd. To me. I am more partial to Vampires, but I think most people are. That is purely because they have gotten more publicity. Also, Vampires are nowadays seen as highly sexual creatures. When Nosferatu came out, he was seen as hideous, with long nails and rat like teeth. Now they are seen as smooth talking, smooth walking beings. They mostly have black hair, liquid black eyes, and an impeccable european accent. Werewolves, on the other hand, haven't changed much. They are, I think, still seen as uncivilized, hairy, violent, and despicable. Which they really aren't except on the full moon. I'd be interested to see what you come up with in terms of a Vampire/Werewolf relationship. I'd like to be notified when it comes out. So now I've put in my two cents (which deviate a bit), and mainly, I say YES to a Vampire and Werewolf relationshi. |

RhoderWhen it comes to deciding between the two, I couldn't choose. But if you really think about it, werewolves have many advantages over vampires. Being able to walk in daylight. They still have those fangs everyone loves so much. But sadly no werewolves in cinema have been appealling to the eye. Vampires are more attractive to the average person because they look alot like the average person. Plus, the way that many people like to relate them to sexiness. Werewolves are more appealing for violent things, being an animal (in essence).Sadly, up until recently werwolves have been pretty ugly. I haven't seen an appealing looking werewolf until Van Helsing or Underworld Evolution. Have you noticed that before these movies they looked more like rats? As for the relationship between the two. I believe that a half-vampy/half-wolfy hybrid sounds very cliche, even if its rarely done. A long with the romeo and juliet cliche, it kind of makes me sick. Why can't they be on the same side? What was the reason that they were against each other in the first place? I'm writing a fiction about a (gonnabe) werewolf whose close friend happens to be (also gonnabe) vampire. I say yeah to the Wolf/Vamp relationship, platonic or romantic, I agree with both. |

Arsenic.DreamsI've never ever thought of vampire and werewolves as enemies although I suppose that since they are so different, they wouldn't be able to get along. I don't want to stereotype either race though. I'm just not a big fan of hatred with no reason so you'll never see me writing a vampire versus werewolf story.| #7 Nov 29th 2006, 12:46pm

Will SachiksyAs Murcurial Weather pointed out in the first post, vampires are opposite in our perceptions of their cognative powers. I would imagine that in a relationship between vampires and werewolves, vampires would try to dominate the wolves, but I don't know how well such a relationship would work long-term. Maybe that could be an explanation for why vampires and werewolves would be a war with each other, but something tells me the relationship I suggested is a cliche one. Logical, though. |

BattleLustI have written a were and vamp getting together in one of my books, however that may have been more b/c of the demoness btw them. Then again the vamp in question was kinda well....for lack of better words horny and so it wasn't just the were, but also another vamp , and he still thought the demoness wouldn't find out let alone kill him. lol! stupid vamp! I luv were's! |

Rain GrayFrom a more naturalistic viewpoint we have to consider what happens when two predators of different species are competing for the same food source in a designated area. Do the biology homework yourself from there. I personally mix things up a bit more when vampires and weranimals interact in my stories. I tend to use more ancient shape-shifter beliefs from shamanistic cultures for my weranimals, which often makes their abilities to change shape a profound religious or spiritual experience. At the same time my weranimals have origins in modern occultism and biology. They're also a bit pathetic since I find it unreasonable, even within a supernatural story, for a sight-oriented creature like a human to flawlessly change into a smell-oriented creature like a wolf (I don't do Chaney-esque wolfmen), so my weranimals spend a lot of time stumbling over themselves and being confused by their senses. I also have them keep their same mass and weight when they transform, so I wind up with pathetically shrunken weranimals (for example, one of my characters is a 123lbs woman who transforms into a tiger, so she has about 1/4 of the mass of a real tiger). My vampires are often similarly pathetic as well, suffering from old folkloric tics and issues, such as having to travel around with graveyard dirt or a condition similar to severe OCD where they will randomly have to count things (this actually is based in folklore). I also deal with the myths say vampires are heretics or excommunicates who can't find rest and who really would like to die but can't unless they're forgiven by the Church. That's how I avoid conflicts between werewolves and vampires. The two don't have to be enemies if you change the context and the background rather than going with the Hollywood versions. My weranimals are too busy trying to figure out smells and reach a higher state of consciousness to fight with vampires and my vampires are too busy twitching and counting pennies and pipe-bombing monastaries to really worry about each other. | #10 Feb 21st 2007, 7:47pm

writergurlLWRain Gray, that sounds different and interesting! I usually try to avoid the cliche's, but for my story I felt as though I had to do something to distract the vampires from the humans, so I had them in an even bigger war with the werewolves. (I don't depict my werewolves as rat-like or ugly though). In my story humans are slaves and vampires are in charge. It's been twenty years of this. The humans want to fight back, but are too afraid because all of the vampires are watching. So the werewolves are distracting.| #11 Apr 21st 2007, 10:29am

The Ferrett(I don't hqave a vampire vs werewolf book but....)Another way to look at things is another peek at the animal kingdom mainly that of the pecking order. Yes vamps and were-thingies are both predators but think of it this way - both require different parts of the human body to survive, so you could have a simbyotic relationship where they coexist taking turns eating from the meals? Or am I just whacked here. | #12 Apr 23rd 2007, 7:09pm

Robbertomo Jerome Straightpen"Are you trying to tell me there is a gray area?""No. I'm trying to say the world is gray area." They aren't enemies. There are no natural enemies. All are a victim of their environment, but we have a choice. A good idea would to have a werewolf that was adopted at a very early age by a neutral family of vampires. Change the environment, change the symptoms. | #13 May 26th 2007, 12:38pm

writergurlLWIn my story 'The Awakening' the vampires and werewolves (as well as other supernatural creatures) must work together to overcome the war with the Silencer and the humans. The most of them don't like each other, but they are able to put that aside for a while. |
