Topic: Any *Original* FP fantasy?
Anyone know of any fantasy stories on FP that *don't* fall into the fairy-tale, Tolkien-esque rip-off category?

...I know, it's like finding a needle in a haystack, but if anyone knows of some, and they're good, let me know, I'm interested.

P.S. No vampires allowed!

This is a shameless self-plug, but one I'm intent on starting (and indeed finishing), though I have as yet not though of a title, is, insofar as this site is concerned, fairly original (if I do say so myself). Basic outline of the world is that it's set in a time period corresponding pretty much with the 1920s-30s, in a country sort of like Namibia in terms of historical background (colony of an Empirical country), but it has had a more-or-less communist revolution which failed and was taken over by a more fascist-style leadership, like early Mussolini. A lot of the traditions are based on Middle-Eastern ones. The 'magical powers' are more a sort of earth-derived spiritualism that allows certain people to manipulate elements, but not to a large degree. The story concerns two girls, one of whom is the second wife of the 'Harr' of the country- the ruler. The other is your typical rustic peasant girl, who becomes connected with an underground movement hoping to overthrow the government (not because of any pressing need to help humankind or save the world, just because they want revenge).

Self plug over.

Other than that, I agree with you completely! I have to confess and absolute LOATHING of vampire stories and all those high fantasy Tolkien, Eddings wannabes. It's been done to death.

Maybe you'd call my The Yingyn Riders Tolkeinesque, I don't know. It is in ways, but there are a lot of original concepts in there which I believe make it both unique and time-tested. I'd like a review or two on that, perhaps after I edit and repost it, which I am going to do in the near future...but if you read it now, know that I took the advice in the massive review.

My Plotseekers is original. I don't know if it's fantasy. It kinda doesn't have a genre...by definition....check it out.

But otherwise, heh, I've found a lot of furrie fantasy on this site lately, which gets really recycled/old.

What has made me realize that 'fantasy' is not synonymous with 'Tolkein' is fantasy art. You must realize that the potential of the imagination is seriously unlimited. I think people have trouble with that concept, like with the concept of eternity.

Fantasy set in other places and times than midevil is a plus. I've never heard of one in the 1920s (Now is it like 1920s America at all, or like 1920s Nambia, which I have no idea what that was like?), and urban (modern) fantasy has become one of my things to seek out. I have a fantasy set in 1100s Japan, which is a pretty original concept, though elements of it come from a certain anime genre which spawned Pokemon and such. (Though hopefully my story's atmopshere is more mature than that.)

I never liked vampires.

Well, I hate to advertise my own stuff, but I'm curious. I'm writing something called "The Arenarian Mark." Don't know weither you'd call it original or not. I'd like to think it is. It's still in the process of being written and thanks to Nemonus's faithful reading and reviewing I do hope to go back and edit the chapters I've already written to get rid of some of the poor mistakes. Of course, I'll do that when time presents itself. For now, I've just got to keep up with writing it. I'm curious to know if you think it's original or not, but I'm not saying you have to read it. I don't want to force that upon you. I guess if you really want to know, outside of my own hopes and praises, I'll tell you to just ask Nemonus, whose already read several chapters of it.

God bless, all,

~Heir of Arenaria

Okay, the one I'm working on right now actually fits more into the fable category, but, frankly, the biggest difference between fable and fantasy is that fables actually have something to say, and people actually read fantasy. lol.

It's called "Grandmother's Fables" and any critical critiques are welcome. Be as scathing as you like, as long as it's constructive. There is no struggle between good and evil, no quest to save the world... Just a girl, trying to find herself.

"itz about angels and demons. The angel falls in love with the demon!! itz really good!" Oh, that's REALLY original...[/sarcasm]

Amazon.com said they'd get me my Harry Potter book yesterday (the 21st) and I DON'T HAVE IT! Argh...*trails off* What to do?

SUE THEM!! DUH!!! if you dont get yours in the 21st, then there isnt a point in ordering it. it only means something if we get our book on the first day it comes out. so i suggest, you go get your book from some other book store, and tell the amazon pple when they come to give u back ur money. Harry potter is worth so much more than a late arrival!

If you have nothing to add, please, PLEASE, don't cause the topic to wander. I'd rather this thread die than mutate into something other than what it was intended to be.

okay, whatever u say. um...didn't i mention above, theres this really good fic about the angels and the demons? well, itz about this girl, shes all alone, then a demon sees how depressed she is and wants to use her. he gives her five wishes, but he screws them all up. then he forces her to kill her bestbuddy, in which she didnt, but instead killed the demon(who was currently in a human body, so she basically killed the body, not the demon) then he got **, and landed her in mental institution, then the demons bro came and killed her. and she gets reborn into and angel. then u can read the rest by your self.

I'm not really fond of the Angel/Demon fics because, frankly, many could be inter-changed and no one would notice the difference. Anything that says angel, demon, werewolf, or vampire in the title or summary is promptly passed over for something more original sounding. Every other fantasy fic out there contains one of those, especially vampires and demons. I'm getting sick of it.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of good, original stuff... "Choosing" by SkItZoFrEaK (I think that's how the name is spelled.) Not only is it original, it's actually *GASP* well written. You get a sense of the character from the very first paragraph.

I don't like writing about medieval fantasy and stuff like that so I'm away from Tolkien, like 2000 miles away. Of course I've seen his stuff, but I don't tend to do that either.

I'm more into the illusions created by the fantasy introduced in the world and how they have blinded the characters. I also like playing with the real world against the fantasised situation too. It's a lot more complicated actually. Ooh.

Anyhow.

Medieval fantasy is so overdone its really hard to write anything original with it. Generally i go for a more futuristic fantasy, it can be easier to create something that isn't a cliche (Even though I've been told my current project starts a little bit like Maximum Ride)

This is a bit arrogant, but I don't think my story, Blade of Baikon, is that bad. As far as other people, I have some good stories under my favorites. "Devschmire" can't remember the author, is pretty good.

If it's not too much trouble would you mind reviewing the story on my website:

www.freewebs.com/dragons-rebellion

I never get any decent reviews of the story unless I shamelessly plug here on Fictionpress.
