In the port city of Alton, the first human settlement, a string of murders has been recorded. It began small, with random persons that were out in dark alleys at night, but then it spread to those in their own homes, those walking alone in daylight, and now no one is safe from the strange killings. All signs point to a Shiverling being the cause, except the murders sometimes happen in the daylight.

The last one killed was the captain of the sailing ship called 'The Dawn'. The one employing the captain has issued a bounty on the head (assuming they have a head) of the killer.

And so the story begins in a small house on the edge of the city, near the woodlands. Several people are searching the house that was once inhabited by the captain, searching for some sign of what had happened there. The man's body lies encased in a magical seal on his own bed. A few of those searching the house have banded together into small groups, and they are more likely to succeed here than those that go alone.
