Topic: Rules and Regulations READ THIS FIRST!
Here's the rules:

1) You must, and I do mean MUST enter your character's information into the Character Background thread BEFORE starting to use them anywhere else in this forum. If you disregard this rule, you will not be allowed to participate in this forum for however long I see fit.

2) All posts MUST be in third person. If anyone is found to be using first person then, your friendly moderator(s) will have a nice chat with you.

3) If out of character discussion becomes necessary within any particular thread, please use ((these)) to differentiate between what your character is doing/saying and what you are saying.

4) Keep in mind that it is the author’s character who is speaking and not the author themselves. All character interactions are permitted and encouraged, including drunken fights, insults, shouting matches, and sword duels.

5) Check for grammar and spelling mistakes before posting. A few errors are acceptable, but if your post is confusing, then it must be corrected. And if you don't correct it yourself I will do it for you.

6) If another author’s character behaves rudely/violently towards your character, DO NOT take it personally. The point of this RP is to test the realism and depth of your characters, by viewing how realistic their interactions feel with other, unpredictable personalities in the mix.

7) Moderators have the right to alter/delete posts, lock threads, and anything else deemed appropriate to deal with circumstances. Don't be upset when we do so.

8) I will add additional moderators as the forum requires them. Reliable authors with the best standing within this RP will be given first priority to become moderators.

9) Just to show that you are actually reading this and paying complete attention, send me one PM with the word bagpipe in it somewhere and a completely separate PM with the word claymore in it somewhere.

10) If you so choose to make use of an "NPC" ((Non Player Character)), please ensure that their actions are true to their original personalities. If you are unsure of what do to with or how to use an NPC, then ask someone else to control them for you.

11) Feel free to play any character that is appropriate to this time period. Using characters from stories you have posted on FictionPress is encouraged, as well as characters you wish to use in future stories.

12) Keep language to a minimum. At this particular time in history, tons of bad language was not all that common, especially among the upstanding citizens.

13) As far as romantic scenes(I more mean sex-related scenes) go, I say this: if you break FictionPress rules, I will delete that post/thread and give you a warning. So you can say something like "Jack and Jill went upstairs....." and then fade out there and then for when you want to fade back in you could say, "The next morning: Jill awoke, got dressed and came downstairs." There is no need to go into any more detail than that. We all know what they're doing upstairs anyway. Beyond that, your characters can kiss as much as they want to. I don't really care about that, so long as you're not going on and on and on and on and on and....you get the point.

14) If you at any point during your time in this forum, disregard and/or break any one of the forum rules set up by FictionPress, I will delete any posts/threads that I deem unnecessary and you will most likely be suspended from using this forum for the minimum of three days.

15) Please have fun here. I don't want to be an evil dictator, but I do want y'all to follow my(and primarily FP's rules/guidelines. And, trust me, you can do that AND have fun at the same time! =D

ROLE PLAYING

1) Sorry, but all characters MUST be human. This is not fantasy here.

2) Magic is NOT allowed. Seeing as, again, this is not fantasy, magic does not exist. Now, some characters, such as crazy cultic Highlanders might believe in magical entities, but in reality magic does not exist/work. At least not in this RP.

3) Remember: the DM((Dungeon Master)) is always the authority in a quest. If he/she says that something has to be corrected or changed, then you should comply. If you do not comply, the DM has the authority to report you to the moderators, if he/she deems it necessary.

EXCEPTION: If you think the DM is abusing his/her position, you should report it to me or a mod. We will review the situation and come to our own conclusion.

4) Don't overpower your character. Tone them down, even if they are supposed to be really strong. No Chuck Norrises or Spartans.

5) When replying to something that someone else posted please PLEASE use the quote to show what they said and THEN reply with your character. Otherwise it gets way too confusing way too quickly

6) A single written character cannot be represented in more than one place at a given time.

7) For ease of RP, hub-style threads will be on a time warp. It will always be the same time of day, forever.

HUB STYLE THREADS: Town Hall, The Village Inn

8) Characters can have threads for their homes, workplaces, hangouts, or anywhere else where they would spend much time. Just use your common sense with these.

QUESTS

Definition of a quest for use in this forum: A role-playing scenario where any amount of characters are attempting to reach/accomplish a goal. (Examples: Killing a bounty, retrieving an object of untold power, visiting a neighboring town)

1) All quests must have a DM.

2) In the first post, in ((double brackets)), the characters in the quest and the DM(s) should be listed.

3) If you wish to be in a quest, you MUST receive permission from the DM and/or founder.

4) Name the quest appropriately, with a name and number. (Example: Quest #4: The Search for Lord Artair's Lost Shoe)

COMBAT

1) You CANNOT decide the success of your attacks. Do not write "Bob ran Jack through with his sword," write "Bob tried to run Jack through with his sword."

2) Damage is written by the receiver of an attack, not the attacker. This includes injuries, broken weapons, disarming, etc.

3) The goal of combat is NOT to win (usually). The goal is to have an entertaining role play. If your character would normally lose, then let him lose. Give opponents advantages, and have your character make mistakes when he normally would/should.

4) Not a rule, but just a good idea: read your opponent's character data before fighting. It's good to know what you're up against.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE, UNCOMMON KNOWLEDGE, ETC

This post is to help define and give detail to the time period that the village is based in.

1) The majority of Scots living in Scottish towns(as opposed to Scots living in English towns) along the Border have an extreme dislike for the English. The majority of English soldiers who inhabit the English towns (also along the Border), have an extreme dislike for the Scottish

2) The current monarch of England is Queen Elizabeth I. The current monarch of Scotland is King James VI.

3) The Scots and the English don't get along. At all. At least, not usually. There are some Scots who are turncoats and just want to bring themselves more glory by being a traitor to the crown(the same with some Englishmen, too).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

THE VILLAGE

This post is to help define the village itself.

1) The village is in the Scottish Lowlands close to the Border, and as such it is in constant fear of the English. It was founded by Artair MacRae, Patrick MacGregor, and Robert MacLean.

2) The common currency is gold and silver coins and anything valuable enough to be traded.

3) The village is made up of about a dozen decent-sized one-story houses, a town hall of sorts with a smallish courtyard and a cell, an inn, and a well and two sets of stocks in the square. In a rather large fenced-in field on the West end of the village, the villagers keep some sheep and horses.

4) The West side of the village is a cliff face with several caves of various sizes in the side. The North, South and East sides are made up of a stone and palisade wall that curves slightly in a rough crescent shape against the cliff with a large gate facing East.

5) Again to make sure that you're really paying complete attention and really reading all this, I want you to send me a PM with the phrase 'Alba Gu Brath!' in it somewhere.

6) The village is run by Lord Artair MacRae. He has set up a militia of sorts which Robert MacLean is in charge of. There are two sets of stocks in the village square, but they are rarely used. The militia is mainly there in case of English attack, but they can also be used to settle disputes among the villagers.

LANGUAGES

The main languages spoken by the Scottish are Scots and Gaelic. Gaelic is mostly only spoken by the Highlanders and is rarely if ever spoken by Scots who live in English towns. Scots is kind of a mix between English and Gaelic, sort of. (I don't really know all that much about it, to tell you the truth). Some Scots, mostly only those in the Border towns, speak or at least understand English.

The main languages spoken by the English are.....wait for it....English! and Latin, but mostly only the priests and those in higher authority speak Latin. Not many English(if any at all) understand, let alone speak Gaelic.

EVENTS

To make the RP in this forum a little more interesting, I've decided that every now and then, there will be events. These events will range from festivals to raids to weddings.

These events may or may not be announced, and they may or may not affect all threads and characters, depending of the nature of the event.
