That's true, I notice now that Sevia does mine/export gold and other precious metals, which means that until Diem starts dealing they have a monopoly on gold production. Good thing for us they need food imports, or we might be in big trouble.
Rakarskia has now got huge competition for metal goods now. Ant to Lavie: putting it lightly, you are not the most economically minded of people. After all, you put in the first militarist power which now seems so very popular in here.
I just like killing more than i do economics :) anyways, I understand how economics works... but as we should all know that it doesn't always work how you think it'll work...
We shall have to ruin you with gold, then! Foreign investment, that's the key. And re economics, I have always wondered why being a bookmaker and being a stockbroker/investment banker are considered to be on opposite ends of the respectability scale. After all, the job's basically the same.

One earns many millions of pounds, the other is put in loads of sitcoms. Have you read the Alex Masterly comic strips in the Daily Telegraph? And Marinus, would you consider yourself to resemble Bertram Wilberforce Wooster?
I meant the mechanics, awilla dear. They're both based on risk calculation. And a successful bookie can earn a lot, too, I'm pretty sure. In what manner, resembling Bertie Wooster? If you mean the complete and utter cluelessness and lack of tact when talking to people, then no, not usually. English gentleman, yes. Except I do know how to make a cup of tea. 4.30 in the morning is a little early to wake someone up to do it for me. And yes, I have indeed seen Masterly's comic strips.
From now on, I will stop presuming that Stephen Fry has been planning all your nations' policies and suchlike. "There is one, reasonable solution, sir, and that is to send a diplomatic vessel to the Archiapelago" etc.
"By Jove! I say, send in the Airfleet! Take down an aerogram, would you? Air-Marshal Invidia, Lord of the Eastern Skies, DCB EoE ODE CDE and Sol. Request Airfleet to destroy Rakarskia. Pip pip! Lumen. Oh, PS: Bring layers." "If I might venture to express an opinion, sir, sending in the airfleet to bomb Rakarskia back to the stone age does not, to me, sound like a wholly wise course of action, sir. It is fraught with the possibility of mishap, sir. There are too many imponderables." "Oh, pish, nonsense, old thing. Perfectly blithering, my dear man." "The supplies of tea will dry up, sir." "N-no! Not the tea! Send an aerogram cancelling that other aerogram!" "I have not, in fact, sent the first one, sir." I'm always reasonable, awilla. I never do anything without a well-thought-out and balanced plan if I can help it, either. The above conversation would probably never happen. Probably.
There's a fine fic in this...
Glad you like it, old chap.
By the way, awilla, have you forgotten about Inquisitor Sewell?
No, I've just been in Exeter for a few days. Sorry about that.
May I enquire as to why? And it's certainly not your fault.
It was decided that I needed a break from GCSE revision, so I went to visit a few relatives. It was most pleasant.
Oh. It was 'decided' was it? One of those 'now, it's for your own good' ones? I dislike most of my relatives.
looks like theres five potentially six people accepted to the Sci fi nation roleplay, So obviously i'm making some shameless advertising. More poeple are always welcome, hope to see you there.
Andarius. I don't mind a little bit of advertising to get your forum off the ground, but please stop. There's a line between advertising and spamming the forum, and its somewhat disrespectful to the owner of said forum (me). Your always welcome to join the fantasy roleplay here if you like. If you do I won't begrudge you the advertising, but please be respectful.
I was thinking about joining this rp anyways, so i'll go and do that.
Now we see a glimpse of the inner working of the Archipelago state. Technically, the king is the absolute ruler of the realm, and perfectly within his power to tell merchants what to do and where to go. That however, wouldn't make them that happy. Instead he generally establishes patrols for the navy, which are safe places to travel. Go outside those safe zones and you're free game for all the pirates he's let show up.
Mindwarp, dear, should I make a new thread about Sabryn? (Seeing as awilla and I are trying to conquer it, and because [if I win] it's rather a long way away from my Empire.)
I do so like adding intrigue. And we could just reach a settlement of who loots what.
We could, indeed. But I was rather hoping to use it as a forward base for further (and more accessible) trading with Rakarskia and Kaleo, and the new nations which have been springing up in that area. Hence the waiting for my airship with construction materials and a significant military force.
Yes, make a new thread about Sarbryn. Oh, we're going to have to establish what's left. I had the idea that there would be the ruined buildings, and whatever natural resources were entered, but Marinus brought up the point of documents and relics. Do we want the records of magic and technology to be left for claim, or just buildings and resources?
Well, not sure if Awilla or Marinus would like to allow it, but Kaleo had an academy and a small battalion of troops there from when the orcs had attacked.
They can still be there if you so wish. Serves to add a third party, and leaves me wanting to know why you had an academy there?
Ok, seeing as both Rakarskia and Diem want the books in the Sarbryn university, we're going to have to decide what exactly is there. I'm a bit predisposed to say that they're empty, simply because we don't know what the originator would have had there. It's open for debate though, any thoughts?
The map has been updated. I'm pretty sure Andarius has some cities planned though, so if he'll tell me where they are I'll fix that.
From what I recall, there were spells dealing with the air - raising winds and so forth, some few dealing with lightning and electrical effects, as well as some illusion spells - that Sabryn commonly used. There'd probably be some record of them. Even just having a few books remaining (the rest having been charred beyond recognition or something) would be useful - to either side.
Sorry for being absent and therefore ignorant, but how exactly did Sarbryn become these ruins? Cause, it would affect whether or not Kaleo already has a military presence there. They had a stationed military and an academy of mages there before when the author was still here to play it.
Given the nature of Sabryn, the most in-RP explanation would be a magical accident of some kind. Perhaps the equivalent of an atomic bomb, but without all the pesky radiation.
The rules state that after two months absence a person's kingdom becomes ruins and is up for grabs. How it happens isn't really determinable, so the best idea seems to be to simply wing it based on what we know of the place. On another note, Sarbryn is even more valuable now. There's a large area of coastland that's easily controlled form there, and the gulf controls the river (which we haven't named yet).
We could go with that magic-meltdown in a way, but not really sure that is something that would've been likely for Sarbryn. Maybe a flooding of the river via a storm? Or a larger orc invasion? As Kaleo's military presence began after assisting in thwarting an orc siege.
I'd suggest that maybe the university moved elsewhere and the economy collapsed. It seems the most likely considering the way Sarbryn worked.
I have partaken in the cursed activity known as forum-necromancy. I only hope that its semblance of life with draw players back like mothers to a replaced light bulb, so that my undead creation may walk Fictionpress again. You may notice a few changes. I tried to clear up a bit of the forum-clutter here. A couple of information threads have all been consolidated into one big Info Dump thread. On the battle system, I'm still working on it, but I'm starting to realize it may not be the best choice for a forum. A javascript video game maybe, but I don't have any experience with programming. I'm considering using something similar to the system on the Scifi RP forum. By which I mean having a set of simple numerical ratings (like 1-10) and having people rate all their soldiers and explain any strengths/weaknesses. It might provide enough information to avoid hassles without being as intimidating as a numerical statistics system. I've also updated the map to accurately show where everything is.
I applaud your magical powers, sir.
Those two new nations will be very interesting. And I think I'll be removing the Northern ZCC, then changing the Southern to a new nation overtime by some events (starting with a Kaleon invasion of the northern colony)
Hrm, that might be a good idea. It would get rid of the nasty knot in the forum that is the Rakarskia-ZCC war.
Northern colony taken, now posting for the Southern. ANd for reference MW, Zynarck was supposed to be on the other side of that piece of land, like in sector I-8.
I'll fix that next update. I'd also suggest that you let Awhilla in on the looting. He did fight most of the battle against Herck, I'm sure he'd like to get in on the victory.
I'm hoping he'll post soon, so I can edit in with some Rakarskian soldiers with the Kaleons [just waiting for his permission].
I think that you should pin the off topic chat mindwarp, just to make it a little more organized, not trying to sound controlling or anything, just trying to offer some constructive advice.
You can add a few to the final victory. I would suggest a few howitzer shells and perhaps a musket volley.
Ahh well, I'm lazy, so not going to edit. But as long as we agree it happened, then it did, okay? =). EDIT: And Awilla, you might want to post again soon in the Sarbryn thread...
Poor Doctor Henry Herscett and his marvellous invention. One of his first flights and already fired upon by gyrocopters.
Sucks for him. It seems like Rakarskian explorers are generally on the wrong end of whatever is going on.
He is only an inventor, taking advantage of the curious air currents and even odder large amout of technical expertise in the area. Hopefully he'll get an airship designer to talk to him some day...
Especially because I've bought most of Sabryn and the bit of land bordering the mountains, Yiona and the desert, from the Kaleons. He's getting boxed in by mage-friendly places. (Speaking of, I'm waiting to discuss turning thirty-four million imperials into Islander crowns with a bank manager in the Isles.)
It was quite the bargain for Kaleo. Most of that land they had no control and even little knowledge of it.
The expeditionary force is still present. Don't forget the men with the muskets...
I do have to inquire how the Diem are going to build a pipeline to Zeb'ron. It's a good distance underwater (several week's travel by accounts so far), and a lot of it would be deep, deep ocean. I wasn't aware that Diem, or anyone for that matter, had that kind of capability.
