Jen dismounted the horse she'd been riding and tied the reins to a fencepost, walking with stealth and silence towards Cross. She stood behind him, crossing her arms and smirking.

"I though you learned your lesson ten years ago." she teased.

He jumped at her voice.

Jen grinned and laughed, clapping her hands.

"Works every time."

He laughed too.

Jen grinned.

"You do realize that if a girl can scare you that bad, those Yanks'll be doing worse to ya."

"Yankee's are weaker then girls.

"Amen to that. Mind if I join ya?"

"Go ahead."

Jen grinned and sat beside Cross.

"So how's the bullethole?"

Oh it'll be alright."

Jen nodded.

"Alright." she said smoothly, shrugging. "So you've been working at it every day I hope? Avoiding infection, flesh disease, lice, all that pleasant stuff?"

A smirk played at her lips.

(Note: They did not understand infection at the time In fact, they used to call it addable pus and thought it meant you were healing.)

"As best I can."

((OK, sorry. Just was referencing MMoD's patient in the hospital... she mentioned something about it.))

Jen rolled her eyes.

"That is the first sentence that tells a nurse she should slap the patient."

"You'd do it even if I was."

"Quite true. 'Cause if I didn't do it, your Mama'd have to do it to you in your coffin."

"testy."

"Well that's your ma for you."

She grinned, knowing he probably meant her.

"Oh don't bring her into this..."

"She was worse than my Pa, and that's all I'm sayin'."

"True..but he didn't chase you half naked with hoe did he?"

"Got a point."

"What did he say to you after that?"

"Well," Jen sighed, "He brought out the switchrod, gave me a lecture on indecency and locked me in my room until dinner."

"Not bad..your dad beat me raw then my dad joined in."

Jen shot up straight.

"No!" she laughed. "Your Pa used to make indecent jokes about us all the time!"

He laughed. "Just tellin what happened."

"Aw!" She sighed dramatically, "And I thought he was always on your side!"

"Not then I guess."

"Apparently not. My Pa was never on my side."

He laughed. 'Nope."

Jen sighed.

"God rest the poor man's soul, but he was AWFUL."

"He wasn't bad when he wasn't running after ya."

"At least he didn't hit us much." she admitted. "Ma was the strict one."

He laughed. "Yup."

"Think I've still got that scar from when I was ten..." she mumbled, pulling down her sleeve to look at the red welt on her shoulder. "Yup."

"I told you not to run into that wall."

(I'm avoiding that cuz Mr. Walsh is based on a friend who doesn't beat his kids by the way.)

(Ah OK)

Jen smirked.

"I told you, it moved!"

"Walls don't move Jenny," he said rolling his eyes.

"They do when they're out to kill you."

"Oh blame the walls not the girl."

Jen just stuck out her tongue.

He laughed.

Jen rolled her eyes.

"Men are babies." she muttered.

"Hear you'd want a baby,huh?"

Jen glanced over, looking perfectly innocent.

"Why have a baby when you can have a Confederate soldier?"

He laughed.

She sighed and got up.

"Not that this isn't any fun, but I'm exhausted and just came by to make sure you weren't dead."

Jen smirked.

"And would it really kill you to change your goddamn bandage once a day? I can smell it from here."

"Fine," he got up and changed it.

Jen rolled her eyes with a smile and got back up on her horse, riding away.

He sighed and went back to his fire.
