Where most of the fighting will take place; It spends for a few miles and is mostly a flat piece of ground with a few tall trees at both endsthat provide shade or cover. As you cross toward the middle there are a few small hills.

UNION

General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain shielded his eyes as he scanned the land in front of him. His mind was already churning out diagrams and paper orders, to be discussed and given to his subordinate officers.

"This is where it will happen, then?" he asked his aide, Roak.

"Yes sir," Roak said. "The Rebs are just over that hill," he said, pointing.

Chamberlain nodded. He could hear the distinct sounds of artillery digging in behind him on one of the ridges.

Cross stared across the field next to the fluttering flag of his regiment.

Brighelm shouted orders his heart pounding.

CONFEDERATE

Longstreet sat atop his horse, walking it up and down the long columns of his grey-clad soldiers. Officers and aides were scurrying about with their orders, and troops were being moved into position. The ground was very good - flat, easy terrain, with ridges on both ends. There would have to be an artillery softening, first...just like Gettysburg.

Sergeants Forgue and Oke had no trouble keeping their men in line. All of them were silent, steely-eyed on their alert horses, except a few who were praying, and one was singing "Lorena" with a quavering voice. Eddie shushed him with a steely look.

UNION

Colonel Barron could see the Rebel flags fluttering atop the ridge about a mile or two away. He patted his pocket, where the picture of his three darling girls rested.

Private Adam Devon cussed the Rebs and spat, fondling his rifle with heady anticipation for the battle to come.

Confederate Cady stood staring straight ahead as she awaited orders. Her first battle! Everything was happening so quickly.

Union Charlie glanced about his lines, trying to remember where his father had stood the last time he had seen him. It wasn't his first battle ever since his father's disappearance, but he still desperately hoped his father would show up in the troops or something. He blinked as he turned to face forward.

((Hey, guys...could you put "Union" or "Confederate" at the tops of your posts or before you start with a character? I can't remember who everybody is, to save my life...))

CSA

Lee rode up next to Longstreet. "We must conserve fire this time."

Cross' beat as his Captain ordered his company in Skirmish Order.

UNION

Aaron spat at the ground, one hand clutching his rifle with his ear trained for the order to aim.

CSA

Longstreet nodded. "Yes, General Lee, sir." He saluted, and turned to an aide, relating the command, then looked back at the grey-haired gentleman as the officer galloped off to relay the message to other commanders. "We'll win this battle, sir."

USA

Chamberlain saw the Rebel flags on the ridge, and he put his looking glasses down. "They are amassing, Roake."

Roake nodded.

Sighing, Chamberlain turned. "Begin artillery bombardment."

There was a shout of "Fire!" echoed a hundred times over, and then the blasting began.

(Evil sister is kicking me off the computer!! NOOOO!! I'll have to come back later! My characters will just follow infantry orders until I come back)

Aaron looked at the artillery and waited for his commander to give the order for infantry to fire, his gun ready.

CSA

Longstreet was taken aback with the suddenness of the Union offense. The ground shook as cannonballs slammed into the earth, spraying dirt and rocks everywhere. There were distant, chilling screams as ranks were blown apart by the rocketing shells, and Longstreet drew his saber. "Close the gaps!" he bellowed. "Close the gaps!"

Somewhere, someone gave an order, and the artillery unleashed their hellfire.

'If you do well,' he said.

CSA

Kyle and Mac where side by side on horseback, waiting for their commanding officer(whose name escapes me) to give them orders.

((I have no idea what to do with them, so just assume that they follow along with everyone else.))

((Mac would be issuing orders, too, since he's an officer. But - "whose name escapes me" - LOL!))

CSA

A cannonball screamed overhead, and the group surrounding Lee and Longstreet ducked. "Sir, you should get back," Longstreet called to Lee, straightening.

USA

Chamberlain nodded to his infantry colonels. "Issue the order to load and shoulder arms. Wait for the orders to move out, and do not break ranks."

Barron and the others saluted and spurred their horses off to give the orders.

((Mac's not an officer.... he's a scout....))

((...Oops. My bad. Well...how does he feel about the battle? The officers issue orders and the underlings have to actually DO them. SCARY!))

Confederate Cady nearly jumped as cannonballs pounded the earth near the front ranks. Battle was definitely going to be violent...

Union Charlie heard the boom of the artillery. For the first time in a long time he was excited about battle. He was ready to fight hard.

((Same))

Aaron saw the commanders on horseback and got ready to shoulder his rifle. He sent a quick prayer up to God, begging his brother for forgiveness once again.

(argh! my sister is watching 27 dresses!)

Confederate Cady sighed, impatient for her orders.

(*headdesk* writer's block!!!!!! )

A large salvo of Confederate soldshot was directed toward the the lelf flank of the Union line.

Aaron watched as people fell around him, and he bolted out of the way. Shit!

Union Charlie fell with others around him. Luckily he was near the edge of the left flank and he was only left with a few scars. He picked himself off the ground and raced back into the lines. He was almost back with his troops when he remembered that he had dropped his rifle. He would have to find another. He sprinted back to where he had fallen and found his rifle. He picked it up and once again raced back to the troops.

There was a few second delay and then another salvo.

Union Wow! Another salvo! Charlie ducked close to the ground, clutching his rifle.

This time each gun belched fire a spit second after the one before it, their barrels glowing red.

"Shit." Aaron muttered again, kneeling on the ground as he reloaded his gun. He set another aim but let the rifle fall to the ground as a bullet grazed him in the arm.

((I'm baaaack!))

CSA

The artillery traded volleys for several long moments. Then the Union guns fell suddenly silent, and Longstreet stood in his saddle, peering carefully with his field glasses. Then he saw the fluttering, starry banners shudder and surge forward. He gestured wildly with his saber. "Forward, men, forward!"

USA

After issuing the final orders to charge the Confederate lines, Chamberlain galloped up and down the lines as they began to creep forward. A Reb cannonball whizzed above his head, and took his hat with it. Brushing at his bare hair, rather stunned, he whacked at some would-be deserters with the flat of his saber.

The lines of blue moved forward across the wide plain towards the thick ranks of Reb butternut.

Kyle and Mac charged forward with the others, guns at the ready.

USA

Aaron tried to read just his shoulder and stood up, gritting his teeth with firey eyes as he took aim to bring down another Reb.

(You do know no one his given the order to march and a Springfield would only fire about 600 yrds, T?)

CSA

Mac heard the angry whine of a bullet and then felt something whip past his face . He reached a hand up to his cheek and it came away wet. Muttering curses under his breath, he turned his horse up to find someplace high that he could snipe from.

Kyle started firing when everyone else did(whenever that is/was).

Adam Devon, his rifle extended outwards and the bayonet glittering in the morning sun, trotted across the plains with his comrades as the Confederate cannons blasted down at them from the ridge.

Chamberlain leant over towards an aide. "Tell Colonel Ackerman to aim his guns towards the extreme left and right flanks of the Confederate artillery," he shouted over the din. "They are the ones causing the most damage."

The aide saluted and galloped off.

CSA

Eddie and Forgue were spurring their horses down the ridge when, suddenly, there was a crack, and Forgue toppled backwards off his horse, the regimental flag he'd been bearing juddering and tilting crazily as the horse spun and reared. Eddie snatched the flag from the saddle and slipped it over his own, leaving the corpse of his best friend to be trampled by the oncoming troops.

Mac found a high place and set up his Whitworth rifle, aiming it at the Union ranks and fired off a shot for what he supposed was an officer.

Colonel Barron was terrified as he led his troops into battle. But he concentrated on sitting straight and calm in the saddle, though it felt as if every gun in the whole damn Reb army was pointing at him.

"Come on, boys, keep steady," he shouted, twisting slightly. Just as he turned back, however, there was a hot, searing pain in his stomach, and he was thrown backwards off his horse. The sky went dark.
