Topic: The FPSSA '08; Old Project, New People

Hi, this is omgitskandice. Right now, I'm the one handling this, but if there are any takers, please feel free to PM me. Because of the small number of staff, I am thinking about scaling down the competition.

OK, I'd like to do a quick recap to make sure everyone is all on the same page .There are 4 main categories and 6 subcategories comes out to 24 potential categories in which stories can be nominated:

Main Categories:

Supernatural/General (a catch-all)

Supernatural/Romance (includes Drama and Friendship, etc)

Supernatural/Action (for stories that focus on the action and adventure)

Supernatural/Poetry

Sub Categories:

Best All-Around Best

Most Memorable Characters

Best Plot

Best Story That Never Seems To End

Best Written (taking into consideration grammar, spelling, writing style, etc)

Best Story That Makes Me Cry Laughing

Please, I need people that are willing to read and nominated stories. Judges will only be recruited if you can prove that you are fair and know what you're doing

If you are nominating a story, post it here, putting the title in bold and the author in italics. Also, include the heading "I want to nominate:" to avoid any confusion.

There will be prizes and when they all ahve been decided on, they will be posted in this thread.

The FPSSA is not based on votes. The process goes as thus: Story is nominated, then judged to narrow down the number of nominees. After nomination is closed, the judges will decide the winners together.

In addition, please let the author know that you have nominated them for an award.

A story can be nominated for as many awards as applies to the story, but if someone has already nominated that story, please do not do so again. You may show your support for that story by giving reason why you believe it should win.

Because of the current obsession created by Stephanie Meyer's stories, stories whose plots and/or characters parallel her stories will not be considered.

And thanks to Freaky Fred, who gave me this wonderful idea of creating a community where those who want to participate can subscribe. The community will be one of the places winners will be posted. It should be up and running shortly.

Lastly, if you had the opportunity to get your story nominated please include your nomination in your story updates. We are trying to get as many people involved as possible. But we have to ask you not to tell your readers to nominate you in order to keep this competition as fair as possible.

I want to nominate:

Becca's Becoming by I. Degolier (Best Written) http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2567531/1/Beccas_Becoming

Haha, I hope that format's okay; I included the url, though, I'm sure you can see that...

YAY! Okay, everyone, that's exactly how it should be formatted. Now that you have nomiated the story, it will be judged and it will be determined whether or not it will make it to the Finalists List.

Due to a lovely PM I received, I would like to nominate...well, myself, really. I don't know precisely what's going on here, but if I've done something wrong, I'll be checking here on a regular basis to see what's up in any case.

Twilight Moon (aka Hush) by Arianna Sterling (Supernatural/Romance) http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2561248/1/Twilight_Moon Alister Rowan, 18-years-old, is a vampire Hunter. Or at least, he thinks he is. That’s the way he was raised, definitely. He grew up learning to kill the bloodsuckers. He planned to spend his entire life doing it. Then he made the mistake of going along with this plan for his siblings. Alister had to infiltrate the vampire Armand’s home. Then a problem arose: Armand decided that Hunter or not, Alister was going to belong to him.

Oh...there's this insane thing on the Nominate board that I saw which says 'no spelling errors' and that's ridiculous. I have spelling errors and I know it, but it isn't like there are a lot of them. I don't want to go back and edit until after I have written the entire first draft is all. Hopefully that won't affect things.

Lol I have been Changes in the Night by omgitskandice and that one is also a very good read. Um, by the way, VelvetyCheerio? What categories are you nominating these stories in so we know what exactly they should be judged on based on category? I guess I'll also be taking a look at the other stories you have nominated...

Umm..yeah Guacamole, sorry, I guess I should have nominated them at seperate times so that it wont be so hectic. And then I have a few more, but I have no clue what to put them under so I'll nominate them later. Sorry again. :) And sorry if it's hard to understand, I'll make it look better later on, I'm actually reading right now. lol

You can edit your post using the MOD button. If you wouldn't mind, Guacamole, can you please judge them? I will try to find other judges willing to look through them. If you'll give me a couple days. Remember though that they don't all have to judged until the new year, so no rush. Have to go. I have 10% battery left.

Hi Guacamole and Laura Lopez: I'd like to help with the judging and omgitskandice said I should talk to you guys about it. I can't judge the Best Written category because one of my stories was nominated there, but I'll take any other entry. Just tell me which stories you want me to take in which category, and I'll look through them. :-)

It seems really strange and for some reason wrong, but I would like to nominate myself. The Visitors by LeonAle. I think I'll nominate it for Best Plot. I'm not sure if we're able to nominate ourselves, so please excuse me if I do.

I can't speak for the moderators, but IMHO I don't see anything wrong with nominating your own work. Fictionpress is a big site and it can be hard to get recognized by others, so there's no need to feel bad about promoting your own work if you're proud of it. Also, the bigger the pool of nominees, the more exposure the FPSSA's get. It's totally up to the moderators, of course, but for what it's worth, there's my $0.02 on it.

#20 Dec 01st 2008, 7:21pm
Laura Lopez

Hey there I.Degolier, I'd say I could tell you what to read right now but I can't. I'm just not sure what Guacamole already read, and I've only started reading Earthbase 12. I don't think it matters what category you read, as long as you read the story, and whatever category it's in is what you'll be looking out for it to be good. But I get your point about not reading in your own category that you were nominated in. So yeah, just wait for Guac to tell you what's been read already.

To Guacomole: I just wanted to ask if you could post up the stories you have read, what you are reading now. Just so I and other judges know what we have to be reading. Or if you could do me a big favor and list down; Stories already judged and Stories that need to be judged. And whenever someone is done if you could edit your post and move stories to where they need to be. I think that would be easier. Not sure. lol :D

Lol sorry I wasn't able to read this earlier guys I was kept away from the computer all day by my sister. Um I will make a list of stories, I haven't read many because I've been kept away this week so hold on list will be up soon. I. Degolier, that would actually be super awesome if you could read through the stories that have been nominated for best written it would help me out alot! Actually, I do have a proposal to all the people who are/will be judging. Should we each judge a different category to make things less confusing? Oh and here's a list of what I have been reading I actually have it now

Becca's Becoming by I. Degolier

Twilight Moon by Arianna Sterling

Dance Parhelia by Quarter. Queen

Changes In the Night by omgitskandice

Lol I actually used to read How High by Euphorialie but don't even remember what that's one about anymore. I want to start reading other's that have been nominated but first, if we do decide to judge a certain category then I need to know which one's to read....

#24 Dec 02nd 2008, 5:52pm
Guacamole

Oh also, since we have not decided yet about judges judging seperate categories I will for now read The Slave of Heaven by RyAnn Leigh but also Amaranthine by Freaky Fred. The others that Laura has nominated i will look over once I know for sure!

Oh ahaha Yay i have finished reading Amaranthine by Freaky Fred so I will be going on to the next story! (I have added on to the post of this earlier).

Guacamole: Well, what we are doing now, is eliminating stories, to lessen the nominations. If it isn't the best ever, then it's gone. And then once this round of judging is done what us judges are going to do is all agree on what stories to win in each category, so in the end, I'm sure we will all read all the stories that make it to the next round.

I'd also like to ask all judges, not to leak who made it to the next round and who won before omgitskandice posts it up, I'm sure that would make everyone mad.

omgitskandice: Just wanted to make sure that is how it is, the whole judging thing. I don't want to get it mixed up and I screwed everything up, so yeah, that is how it is right? lol

#26 Dec 02nd 2008, 7:15pm
I. Degolier

If they haven't been taken already, I will read Once Bitten by mandybeth and The Visitors by LeonAle. Guacamole, I'd love to help with the Best Written category, but I can't since Becca's Becoming was nominated there. ;-) I will wait for omgitskandice's response before I start reading, though, since I will have to change stories if she wants only one judge to read all the stories in a certain category. It may be more time-intensive, especially for the categories with really long stories, but it's probably the best way to evaluate the stories since they can only really be compared against other stories nominated in the same category.

Oh yeah that's true....well then judge for whatever other category you would like to because I'm fine with judging for anything. Those stories have not been taken yet that I know of so go ahead and read them! And wait a sec, so we're voting on who's going to win in the end? I thought that the people were also going to?

#28 Dec 02nd 2008, 7:51pm

we are the ones that are going to choose the winners. Or I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

omgitskandice

Good news!!! There is a new thread, especially for stories that have been judged. You can check on the progress of your story. But there's one rule: no one can post but the judges.

Judges: please post the stories (in the same format as they were nominated, if you don't mind, but instead of putting "I want to nominate" please put "I have judged") that you have finished judging under the new thread. And can you do it as soon as possible? To clear up confusion, I will delete the posts on this thread that also declare the judged stories so this topic can be for nominations.

LL: If you choose whether or not to disclose the status of your judged stories, that's up to you. But it means that you will have to PM each time you've finished with a story and notify me of your decision. If you're okay with that, well, it just means that people are going to have to visit the FPSSA website to see whether or not they made the cut.

Guacamole: Yes, the judges are the ones deciding in the end. That way it won't turn out to be a popularity contest because I'm sure the readers aren't going around assessing each story. That's why I asked that you guys are able to objectively judge these stories. They are winning their awards solely based on talent and not how many readers vote. (Because what if author A had 65 readers who will of course vote for her story, but author B has a sotry that is more deserving of the award but only had 29 readers who may or may not vote?)

#30 Dec 02nd 2008, 8:49pm
Laura Lopez

omgitskandice: I just meant that, I didn't want anyone to tell authors if they won, because I'm sure it'll take us all awhile to agree on the winners and someone might just go, oh so and so won!! And it'll ruin the surprise. Mm... yeah, that's all I meant. And that's a good idea, the whole check the website to see who got cut, I wasn't even thinking about that. lol Oh, and I lost the link for the website, can you send it?

#31 Dec 02nd 2008, 9:03pm

I'd like to nominate Changes in the Night byomgitskandice under the (Supernatural/Action). It was already nominated for Most memorable characters, and there's a ton of action in it so yeah.

#32 Dec 02nd 2008, 9:10pm
omgitskandice

Oh... yeah. Haha. that's a good idea, too. Actually, I just kind of assumed that's how it was going to be, haha. But yeah. I think no one should say anything until January 4th when the winner will be posted on the website and the winners recieve their prizes which I am sure they will want to brag about. Also, by 24 hours after the winners are announced on the website, they will also be posted in this topic. After that, this topic will be locked and a new one will open for the next season. And nominations will start all over again.

Did I miss anything?

#33 Dec 02nd 2008, 9:18pm
omgitskandice

Thank you, but Supernatural/Action is the category against which the other "Most Memorable Characters" in that same main category will be jduged. I know it doesn't make much sense now, but I was thinking about if and/or when this thing becomes larger and we have like, oh, say a hundred nominations or something so that way it would be more fair. Like so for instance as "Best Plot" Romance won't be judged against "Best Plot" Action. Because that wouldn't be fair. Does that help? That's why I tell everyone to include a sub-category or it will judged under the "Best Story All-Around"

OK, I'd like to do a quick recap to make sure everyone is all on the same page (myself included). These are the categories and subcategories that omgitskandice mentioned in the first post. 4 main categories and 6 subcategories comes out to 24 potential categories in which stories can be nominated:

Main Categories:

Supernatural/General (a catch-all)

Supernatural/Poetry

Sub Categories:

Best All-Around Best

Most Memorable Characters

Best Plot

Best Story That Never Seems To End

Best Written (grammar, spelling)

Best Story That Makes Me Cry Laughing

These are the stories that have been nominated up to this point. If a main category wasn't mentioned, it's labeled here under Supernatural/General. Two of the nominees didn't mention subcategories so I'm not sure where to put those ones yet, but if their nominators could post which subcategory they want them in I will modify the chart here.

Nominees:

Changes in the Nightbyomgitskandice (Supernatural/Action – which subcategory?)

I haven't put in who is reading what because I wasn't sure yet if the judges are choosing any story or should only read stories in a certain category. I'd prefer to read stories in certain categories since the stories have to be compared against each other in the same category, but it's totally up to omgitskandice, Laura Lopez and Guacamole.

I know this post is long, but I needed to see everything on the same page for my own organizational benefit. omgitskandice, is this how you envisioned things? If you want to go with the category judging, I would suggest the judges each pick some combination of main category and subcategory and read everything nominated under those labels (i.e. if I were to pick the judging category of "Supernatural/General - Best Plot", I would then read The Slave of Heaven, Once Bitten, Moon Rising, etc.).

#36 Dec 03rd 2008, 12:54pm . Edited Dec 03rd 2008, 1:18pm
omgitskandice

Thank you for organizing it. Yes, that is exactly how I was thinking it should go. I copied and pasted your version of the categories into the first post because, well yours was easier to understand. I think I've mentioned it on this forum as well as the website, but I'll repeat it. If a story is nominated without a subcategory then it will automatically be judged under "Best All-Around" as a sort of punishment (because Best All-Around considers everything rather than just one object.).

I left you guys to decide what you wanted to read so that you can choose what you're comfortable with, but no one has been declaring what they want to read, so if Guacamole does not assign each judge a category soon, I will choose them for you.

Reminder: There are 19 nominations and 4 have been judged, we need to have all of them read by the end of December. I know it's hard with only three people and I've been asking for help, but we have to get them done.

#37 Dec 03rd 2008, 1:19pm
I. Degolier

OK good idea. In the first post you may want to tell people who nominate stories to name the category and subcategory, too. You could tell them to put them in parenthesis or whatever format you want.

Wow thank you I. Degolier for organizing the stories, I now know which ones for sure we all need to judge on and what category to judge in. Okay, I was going to have it that whoever(of the judges) wanted to judge for a certain category they can do so, so no one is stuck with something they don't want to judge. If no one though cares about what category they want to do then yes, I will assign categories we can all judge. Please somebody reply back to this soon!

Yes, I'd be willing to be a judge. I haven't got anything finished at the moment. Would these be short stories, novella or novel length stories? I'm kind of a slow reader and I have a full time job.

Guacamole, I'd say go ahead and assign them so we can get started on the judging. I trust your judgment. :-) I'll take any category (except Supernatural/General - Best Written).

Laura Lopez

Yeah, thanks I.Degolier for organzing it all, that must have taken a while. haha

Guacamole we don't care what we judge, we are here to judge, just as long as I. Degolier doesn't get something she was nomintaed in. So yeah, just start giving out the categories. Oh and I'm reading one story so far, it's categorized under The best longest story, and it does seem SOO long so that's why it's taking me forever to finish it. I'm going to try to finish it today or tomorrow, hopefully no one wants the computer. :D lol

omgitskandice no you didnt miss anything, that other thing kind of confused me but not really. lol

A. J. L. Roberts

Hey Everybody,

I would like to nominate myself. I hope that isn't conceited or anything, and I'd also like to nominate another as well.

I'd like to nominate The Angelic War (by A. J. L. Roberts) to be featured in the main category of Supernatural/General.

I'd also like to nominate Bad Moon Rising by The Burning Roses within the Supernatural/Romance category.

I'd also like to ask, if you need judges, I'd be happy to offer my help. I've reviewed a couple of 'The Burning Roses' work and I'm a fair judge. If the story is good, I'll say so, but if there are things that don't make sense, I'll be honest about it.

#43 Dec 03rd 2008, 7:43pm
Guacamole

Ok then I guess I can start assigning categories. So Amy Strauch If you really want to I'm including you in this. I am editing this before the night is over to post by end of day/night what you guys doing but I guess will assign each person a main category and sub. Sorry I'm going slow though in this.

Okay so I. Degolier, since you have been reading stories with the sub category "Best Plot" You can read future stories with that but I understand that you can't judge also for Supernatural/General so how about Supernatural/Action?

Laura, since you have been reading stories that have been "Best Story That Never Seems to End" I guess you can read anymore stories nominated for that. Lol I'm sorry for that, I know they can be long but please hang in there! Oh also I guess "Best Written". I was almost going assign you Supernatural/Romance as well but we got another person besides Amy Strauch who wants to judge and she'll be doing that.

Amy Strauch, if you read this I guess you can judge stories under "Most Memorable Characters" and Supernatural/Poetry.

I myself can judge for "Best Story All-Around" and Supernatural/General. Is Lisa(or Freaky Fred) judging too? Because then I'll be able to assign her a subcategory because now all the Main are taken and she is I believe co-running or actually running our site for this. If she isn't though doing any major judging I'll assign any other subcategory left to whoever.

Oh, I'm just editing this um sure A. J. L. Roberts you can judge for Supernatural/Romance main section.

Sounds great, Guacamole. Just to clarify, you want me to read anything under the main categories "Supernatural/General" and "Supernatural/Action" with the subcategory "Best Plot"?

No, Lisa isn't a judge.

AJLR: Don't feel bad about nominating yourself. And I'll contact you in a little bit about being a judge.

Oh oops if I made this confusing. Um just the Supernatural/Action...any stories that have been nominated under that because wasn't your story nominated under Supernatural/ General? but yeah any story that has been nominated with "Best Plot" also.

*screams* You are KILLING Guacomole!! haha j/j That's fine. i actually LOVe long stories, I'm just worried cause we don't have so much time, and I need to start spreading some word that we need more nominations, I'd like to see more nominations here and let it get more fan base so next time can be better and hopefully a bit more judges, but I'm glad there isn't a lot now, it might get to hectic. But yeah, I'm fine with that, thanks for assigning it all!! :D

It's so funny how those people nominatiing themselves are so afraid. haha I would if I had posted my finished story, or if I had written more chapters, but I don't wanna. Mine are lame right now. lmao :D I can't wait to finish this contest thingy!!! i'm so excited!!!! :D yay!!! :D
