"Never been there."

"Probably never heard of it either."

"I don't get around too much. This is the furthest I've ever been from home."

"Me too." Terry said. "I've never been out of Germany in my life. I had hoped to one day travel the world, see England and France. But not like this. Not as a soldier."

James shrugged, "I'm happy to be seeing some of the world, although it isn't that fun as a soldier, you're right."

"I'd like to see America, one day, though, I don't know if I will be allowed there."

"Maybe after the war's settled down they won't hate us anymore. It's not even like I really meant to fight in this here army. I was drafted, along with many other people."

"I joined, because my brother was killed at the Somme."

"I'm sorry." James didn't know what else to say.

"It's okay." Terry said.

"My father was killed in the war too."

"Well, I'm sorry for your loss."

"Tis ok," James sighed, "My mum and my sisters are all alone back home. I keep on hoping they'll do alright running the store."

"I'm sure they'll be fine."

James nodded. "That's what I keep telling myself too. But what if I get killed, my mum would be heartbroken."

"You shouldn't have joined." Terry said. "My mother and father were killed by allied bombers a few months back, and after my brother was killed I had no family. Nobody will miss me if I die."

"I didn't have a choice, I told you I was drafted didn't I," James said a little annoyed, "If I didn't go I would've gotten into trouble with the government."

"It isn't like the government isn't going to hell." Terry said. He leaned toward James, in confidence. "You didn't think we could actually win this war, did you?"

James shrugged, "I never really payed any attention to what was going on because I didn't think I'd be thrown into it."

"You should have paid attention!" Terry said. "The Allies will probably come pouring into Germany!"

"I'm just a boring shopkeeper Terry," he said softly, "And I don't really think that the Allies will overtake us that easily."

"Oh yeah?" Terry said. "Over a million German casaulties, allied bombings over Germany frequently, and the soldiers are getting younger and younger every day. We're pretty easy to overtake now."

"I'm not that young, I'm 20."

"Not you." Terry said. "Kids as young as thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, fighting this war and being blown to hell."

"That's not right," James said, "People should make them stay home."

Terry smirked. "They should."

He rolled over onto his stomach. "How old are you?"

"Seventeen."

"Isn't that a little young to be fighting in the army?"
