She couldn't bring herself to cry over him. A part of her hoped the message was wrong, that Jack was alive and undercover somewhere and was trying to protect her. Damn the man.

She bit her lip and looked up at him.

"Thanks."

He glanced at the message. "Were you married?"

She laughed.

"Oh, no." she said, shaking her head. "No, that... I played his wife when we were undercover."

"Is there anything I can do?" he asked knowing how close people in wartime became.

She shook her head and wiped some tears from her eyes.

"I just need a moment."

He nodded and went to clear the dishes.

Kate sat there, quiet, realizing what all this meant. She was in too deep. Without Jack the network would falter, and she'd be found out. She couldn't imagine going back to that prison...

"Do you wanna talk about it?" he asked.

She was startled and jumped a little, turning to him.

"N-no, thanks." she said, steadying herself. "I'm alright."

"Okay, I'll be in my room if you need anything."

She nodded. As he turned to leave, she sighed.

"Wait."

"Sure."

She sighed.

"I... I need a favor."

"Anything."

"It's a bit odd." she warned him in advance.

"What?"

"I need you to pretend to be my husband."

"What? For what?"

"It's an assignment." she tried to explain. "Jack was supposed to do it, but... I guess it's up to me now."

"What kind of assignment?"

"There's a party tonight in Paris." she said, lowering her voice out of habit. "Fancy. There's going to be a lot of people there. Important people. One of our allies - I can't say his name - will be there. He is giving us a lot of money to further our cause."

"And why do you need me?"

"Because a married woman showing up alone means something is off." she said. "They expect M. and Mme. LaCroix, not just Mme."

"Okay," he nodded reluctantly.

She sighed.

"I really don't want to make you do this, but I don't have another choice."

"Like I said, anything."

She scratched her neck and gave a half smile.

"How do you feel about tails?"

"Huh?

"Coat tails." she said, getting up. "I have Jack's suits in the closet."

"My sisters always said I looked nice in em,' he shrugged.
