In the car, Kate nudged him.

"Put this on." she said, holding out a silver wedding band.

He nodded and slipped it on, it was a perfect fit.

She slipped on a smaller, matching one and leaned back in the seat.

"How will you introduce us at the party?" she quizzed, getting nervous.

Mr and Mrs. Whateverthiernamewas."

The car stopped and Kate urged Sam out.

"I'm coming Sophie dear, there will be plenty of time to dance."

She smiled sweetly.

"So long as the cold hasn't frozen your two left feet, Philippe." she replied.

He tried give an affectionate laugh as they walked by the German guards. Then up the steps into the grand building.

She held onto his arm and walked in with whatever grace a French countryside orphan could have. Her eyes scanned the crowded room for the Count and Countess.

"Joyeux Noel!" a plump lady to Sam's left greeted. "Merry Christmas!"

"Thank you," he replied in French. "Same to you."

A tall man with grey hair approached the couple.

"Mr. and Mrs. LaCroix, I presume?" he said in French.

For some reason Kate looked absolutely stunned, but nodded all the same and shook his hand.

"A pleasure to meet you." he said before continuing on his way.

"Dear don't be shy." Which really meant "Don't screw this up."

(Easy for him to say.)

She sighed and bit the inside of her lip before smiling sweetly and turning to whisper in his ear.

"Do you know who that was, 'darling'?" she murmured in a sultry voice in case people were watching them.

"No faid not, one of your father''s business partners."

She didn't dare say her boss' name in public.

"Yes." she said quietly. "The most important." she stressed the last word.

He nodded. "Let's go get some food, dariling. Which happened to be where he was.

She followed him, keeping her eye out for the count.

(Wasn't he the Count?)

He kept his eyes peeled.

The count with thin mustache appeared. "1, 2, 3 plates ah-ahah Two, two spies ahaha!"

Kate looked at Sam.

"That's him." she said, subtly eyeing the count. "Wait for my signal."

He nodded.

She casually started walking around, watching the count to see if he saw her.

He followed close behind.

(maybe the count sees them and they just stepped under missletoe and he's like, "kiss."

Kate stopped by the punch table and pretended to chitchat with Sam, laughing and sighing as a married couple would do. The tall man came over and smiled at them.

"I believe it is tradition for a man and woman to kiss under mistletoe." he hinted subtly, looking up at the bough above their heads. Kate laughed.

"Oh, Monsieur." she said, brushing it off.

"I insist, Mme. LaCroix."

Sam mouthed "sorry" and pressed his lips to hers tenderly as a devoted cuple might do, and pulled away with half smile.

Kate was very apprehensive. Jack always made sure that there was no physical contact beyond what was required, and Sam practically jumped at the bit. She reluctantly kiseed him back, making it as brief as possible, and turned back to the nodding count.

"They say the most joyous and most lamentable people in a war are newlyweds." the count said. "For the young bride and groom think nothing but of each other, which brings both joy and sorrow."

Kate bit her lip.

"Your funds, Monsieur, are they adequate?" she said, pretending to reference a recent purchase.

Sam watched the two banter not really sure of what to do.
