in actuality, that HP laptop will only show 2GB of RAM instead of the installed 4GB because the windows operating system is 32-bit. You'll need the 64-bit version for your computer to acknowledge there's really 4GB and not merely 2GB. that's the limitations of the 32-bit.

therefore, you're paying roughly $200-$400USD extra for RAM that your computer will never see.

it's just that your laptop won't have access to as much memory as it really has and so, if you're running programs that eat up a lot of CPU memory (aka vista itself is already a problem in that department...) your computer will lag or be forced to prompt a reboot because it has run out of available memory.

if you're running a high-end graphics game such as any of those MMORPGs out there, then your laptop won't be able to handle it. Rather, windows won't be able to handle it. I was running MegaTen on my mac (in bootcamp) the other night and I took a couple steps with my character...there was a stop error in windows and it automatically switched to data recovery mode and then shut down. Note: I had about 3GB of HD space left in my windows partition, 4GB of RAM and a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor.

It was windows that caused the shut down - in essence, it failed me. (but that was to be expected...) other times, when I had run Pi Story on there, it worked perfectly fine, but after 5 minutes of game time, the fans would be running at maximum output...because the internal parts were VERY hot.
