I took a poem writing class this fall

there were but six of us each Thursday night

they cared for rhyme and meter not at all,

like yours, like you I felt it wasn't right.

But verse that's free is all they wish to read

and so they say it's all that we should write;

and some, perhaps, in weakness may accede

but I, for one, resolved myself to fight.

For meter is a literary love

no shame could ever lead me to refuse;

it joins with rhyme to fit me like a glove

and draws, on angels wings, my precious muse.

This is a trifle, please forgive its flaws:

my freedom's in the sonnet's perfect laws.
